[00:00:17] Hey, what's up, fab? And welcome back again to Recap Kickback. It's me, Chappelle, and I am back again to take you through our podcast that we talk about TV, we talk about movies, we talk about music, and we talk about all the Black stuff too here every week on Recap Kickback. And with me, as usual, my co-host, the amazing Mario Forth. Mario, welcome back. What's up, Chappelle? We are back again another week, another week during Black History Month. Don't it feel good? Don't it feel nice? Do you feel celebrated?
[00:00:46] It's the longest Black History Month of all time. Trump said no Black History Month, and then we said let's double it. Let's do two. Right. While we struggle and fight for every single day of it, you know? Yeah. Something about the Trump presidency just makes everything just feel a lot longer, I think is what it is. It's like every day it's something. Not even past this hundred days like this year. Yeah, it feels like it's been 17 years, okay? It's so ridiculous.
[00:01:17] Oh, I'm so sad. I'm so sad. But y'all, we're back again to finish off our Black History Month finally with our most recent episode here where we will be talking about several things that have come across our desk and the big events that have happened as well, including the NAACP Image Awards, the SAG Awards. Thank you all for listening to the podcast, for subscribing, for supporting.
[00:01:44] So if you haven't subscribed, go to recapkickback.com slash subscribe to join our lovely community here. Also, make sure you go to our YouTube page, youtube.com slash at recapkickback. We're creeping up on 2,000 subscribers in a year. That's crazy talk. But also, it's not moving fast enough, y'all. So even the look, if you're listening to this and you got a YouTube account and you don't even be there like that, go on, hit us up. Go on, shoot us a subscriber or something like that. And then email me and tell me you did it. Yeah, email me and tell me you did it.
[00:02:13] We'll give you a shout out next time. We got to start driving. Oh, yes. Subscriptions. Reviews. Yeah, we need all that kind of stuff. I want to make sure that people can find the podcast. Mari, I've been thinking about leveraging something of myself for the greater good of the podcast. I mean, people want to know more. Your last week's top 10 TV shows, according to Chappelle, people loved it. They want more. They want to know more about Chappelle.
[00:02:41] Yeah, I was thinking more like I'm going to shave my head. But how about I shave my head if we could get to like 5,000 subscribers? Like all gone? Like all of it? So I'm thinking like either like a ball thing, but like a Houston one, not a Dallas one. Or, or, or hear me out. What if I just do ball? You know, so I was thinking. So I've been, it would be the first time I was ball. But anyway, I'm thinking that I could do something with that. Like, you know, just as a fun thing.
[00:03:11] Yeah, I mean, that's neither here nor there. The point is that. I'm Googling Houston bald fade. Yeah. What on God's green earth? Dallas bald fade. You know, it's just like, it's not the same. You don't like it? You don't like it? You don't like Houston bald fade. Yeah, I think I could. I mean. Okay. First of all, I used to have the bald fade.
[00:03:40] What is happening? I used to, I used to rock, or like a Southside. I used to have a rock, a Southside. I really could do a Southside. So anyway, I got a lot of hair, y'all. Okay. But at the same time. I can see that. Yeah. I can do a Southside. But anyway, the point is, I got a lot of hair on my head. And I would be willing to give that up for a greater good, aka subscribers. So help me get to, 5,000 is a lot. Let me get to 3,000 subscribers. There you go. 3,000 seems doable.
[00:04:10] Well, you know, I'm a wrestling fan and I love a good hair versus hair match. So I'm down with this, but Jesus. Okay. You know what? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. I'm thinking bald. I really think bald. Like, I think if I pop out in the summertime with the, with the, like the, the, the fresh, like the, the, that ski ball, you know, like, yeah, I'd be in my like Jordan era, you know, really thinking I can pull it off. We're going to see.
[00:04:37] I don't, I, I have confidence in the recap kickback listeners that they love me enough and my amazing hair to make sure that I do not have to do that. I was going to say, I feel like this is a deterrent. I feel like people are like, we don't want to get the 3,000 because we don't want to see Chappelle. But don't y'all think I, aren't y'all like, aren't y'all a little worried that I wouldn't do it? Let's see if I can put my money where my mouth is. Okay. So let's get some subscribers going. Let's see if we can get to 3,000 subscribers and don't tell nobody. This is a secret. We don't need RHAP and them knowing that I'm going to do this.
[00:05:05] This is between me, you and Mari. So if you listen to this, she's going to say, we're going to do this on the low, low, but tell people. I was about to make a very old head reality TV reference. I was like, you got the Kim in you, the Chippin' Kim, amazing race. Yeah. Uh, yeah, I gotta have that dog in you. You know, Kim, Kim was willing to do it and they are the winners. Wow. I believe. So not to spoil it. One of my favorite seasons. Look, a great tag team. And so, uh, like them, I will be willing to leverage the hair.
[00:05:35] So make sure you subscribe. And if you're listening to this on YouTube, hit that like button, hit the like button, share the podcast and let other people know that we're here talking about great stuff here on recap kickback. Cause we're going to try to bring you more content this year and make it better, bigger and better than it was before. Mari, um, this week, there's some wrestling news coming up. We got a, a, a, a, a, a, coming up. Yes, we do. The elimination chamber, which will be taking place in Toronto, Canada on March 1st, Saturday, March 1st.
[00:06:05] Um, we will be covering it over on the wrestling kickback. Me and Matt, uh, we'll just, we'll be doing our review show like we do. I think Chappelle, we can do it live again. Like we normally do. I think. Yeah. Yeah. Do you think? Yep. Uh, in the Facebook group job, the job has a podcast, Facebook group. Um, maybe the recap kickback one and our YouTube, all that good stuff. We're going to try and get it streaming everywhere.
[00:06:32] Uh, that we were, when, uh, we were doing wrestling, um, rehab up. So, uh, very excited. You know, um, wrestling is like, it is my love, but my kids are my first love. So it's so hard to have kids and watch so much wrestling a week. So the pay-per-views and the PLEs are, are the one thing that I was like, I can put time
[00:07:01] away on a Saturday to watch. And it's normally an event in our house. Like we all watch or we go to a restaurant to watch. So, um, I'm, I'm always excited, uh, around this time of the month. So hopefully, hopefully like in the summer, I might get more time and stuff, but I love Elimination Chamber is always fun. We're still on the road to WrestleMania.
[00:07:26] Um, and, and the picture of what they're painting for the big show is coming into focus. So expect me and Matt to cover it as much as we can. Hopefully we'll have a guest. We will see. Um, but just stay tuned for that. All right. We'll be checking that out. So make sure you look, if you like wrestling, we got it all here. Madden Mari is going to take over that and make sure that we're all laced up on what's been going, going and wrestling and, uh, have their big reactions to the Elimination Chamber this year.
[00:07:55] Um, that is in Toronto. Um, okay. All right. First up, we talked about what we should talk about and we decided the NWSCP Image Awards needs its time. Uh, so, uh, yeah. So I got to watch the awards. I was looking for where, and I guess I know this. I have a BET plus account already. I guess I have it through like my cable provider or something. Oh, already. Cause I remember you saying you were going to get, you were going to get it.
[00:08:24] I'd be saying it, but I look, here's the thing. I'd be trying not to subscribe to all these things. I got to subscribe to like, if I can feel, if I can find it on the dark web in the back rooms, uh, and it's streaming and I got to close out a thousand ads, I will close out a thousand ads every time. But I felt like it's BET. I got to show some love. It's the NWSCP Image Awards as a lifetime member of the NWSCP. I felt like, okay, I can give them a little bit more of my money. So I did. And I checked out the BET, oh, I'm sorry. The NWSCP Image Awards.
[00:08:54] And, uh, I'm so excited that we got to watch it and talk about it and, or get to talk about it because, um, some black excellence at play, Mari. And I, and I've, I've really enjoyed the ceremonies. Yeah. Yeah. I got to watch it live. Uh, cause I have, uh, like some family over this, uh, the weekend, the past weekend. Um, but you know how it is when there's a bunch of black folk in a room. It's like, I watched it. I could hear it. Yeah. It was on.
[00:09:24] It was on. Uh, there were definitely moments that stood out that I was like, oh yeah. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like we all stopped and watched, but, um, it was, you know, it was pretty good show. It's like, you know, coming off the heels of a really, really good Grammys, you know, those are entertainment awards. Like the NAACP image awards is not the same thing. You know what I'm saying?
[00:09:47] It's more of a, like a respectable award show, more solemn occasion. So, you know, that's might not be everybody's cup of tea when, when it comes to watching award shows. And I get that, but I thought it was pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. And so, uh, let's talk about some of the winners, some of the snubs and all the good, the big things of the night. MC light is doing all the announcing for all the shows.
[00:10:17] It's me like, is that right? She has, we can't talk about this enough. MC light has like quietly became the voice of award shows across the, across the globe. I wonder if she does the seat, like the CMT. So CMTs. Does she do the CMT awards? That'd be so funny. Honestly, cause her voice is just amazing. It truly is. It is perfect for award shows. So it's like weird niche, but she feels it. Yeah.
[00:10:45] And, uh, I was like, I hope you don't have no competition. Cause I loved, I would not, the moment I heard her voice, I was like, man, they called MC. So, you know, it's gotta be good. Um, the host, Dr. Dion Cole. I did not know this man had a doctorate, but he got it from Philander Smith. Yeah. Uh, so shout out to that. HBCU love. Uh, yes. On honorary doctorate from our institution. Yes. Here it is. There it is. Um, I found it on the Philander Smith college, um, uh, Instagram page. So that's pretty cool.
[00:11:15] Um, big shout out to HBCUs that will get shown some love in the NAACP image awards as well. We talk about it kind of that we have graduated from NAACP, uh, from HBCUs, but, uh, it, it kind of brought us here, you know, like, uh, when we came up with recap kickback and like you as my co-host, it wasn't like, oh, Mari went to an HBCU. So I got to put her on, we just kind of naturally got like that, like shared language and it might come from, yeah.
[00:11:43] That asylum that raised us out there at the HBCUs. Mm-hmm. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. It's like, you don't have to go to the same HBCU to understand another person's HBCU experience. It is almost universal, um, even though it might vary. Like it's so, it's a language that only we can speak almost. And it's just, it's just fun.
[00:12:10] And that's why, you know, we encourage a lot of people to consider HBCUs when, um, choosing their colleges. Yeah, that was a, they took a moment out of the, uh, the award ceremony to really talk about that, um, and all the work that HBCUs do in the community. Um, and a lot of the community efforts that they talked about in the, in the award show this time, again, were surrounded or surrounding the California wildfires. You know, uh, we talked about it when we talked about our Grammys, um, and we do have
[00:12:40] highlighted here a lot of these Hollywood celebrities, black or whatever, they, they live in that area. You know, this Hollywood's LA, it's the same area. And so they are affected. And so they did a really cool thing when they brought out some of the people from, and this was new information for me. Uh, they brought out some of the people from the Altadena, uh, neighborhood that were affected by the fires, 22 residents that lost their homes. And they talk about Altadena as a historically black neighborhood.
[00:13:09] And I was like, okay, interesting. Uh, so we have heard about people donating and all lending their efforts and even Morris Chestnut gave this, uh, like, uh, it's like a tribute, I guess, to the residents of that area too. So, you know, they touched on those things and we got a performance of Lettucey, uh, as well, kind of taking us to church on that one. Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, we, we've seen this theme.
[00:13:38] It's, you know, the wildfires have, you know, they've been put out, but it's still rebuilding. People are still recovering. They're still restructuring. I think we talked about it, but I can't believe that if your house burns down, you still have to pay mortgage on it. Like that is, I did not know that until these fires. So, um, I'm glad that these award shows are still trying to help because it's, it's a big task. It's a big undertaking.
[00:14:04] It was a lot of like acreage that was burned down in people's houses. It's just so sad. Yeah. They talk about the Alta Denta Community Displacement Fund. It helps people with need, with housing and legal fees. So if you're listening to this and you just, it sounds like something that you could use, spread the word as well. You know, we want these services out to everybody so that they can get the help. Um, Lettucey performed Mahalia Jackson song. I think it was how I got over. And, you know, we don't get a lot of gospel representation at the Grammys.
[00:14:33] Um, but like, I liked the NAACP awards kind of, like you said, it was a little bit more solemn, right? Like, let that ratchet shit go for the Grammys and the BET awards. Like they're going to, they're going to handle it. You know, I felt like this was cool. Right. And all award shows can't be the same. They can't be vying for the same performances. They're not all the same vibe. So I'm not surprised here. Yeah.
[00:14:58] What did you think about Deion Cole as the host? I mean, like to me, hosting award shows nowadays, it's just like, is it as big as it used to be? Because it feels like all the presenters are kind of hosting as well. Like, you know, he, he was good. There was no, like nothing really bad that I can think of, but there's nothing I can really distinguish and think of. You know what I'm saying?
[00:15:27] Like, I feel like hosting has just diminished a lot, or maybe it's again, because of this style award show. Like when I think of hosts, like a lot of good hosts, I think of like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey for the, uh, but that was for the SAG awards. And I feel like the SAG awards gives them like a lot of latitude. It's a little, I don't know. Yeah, exactly. It's not like the SAG awards too. They be drunk. Yeah, exactly.
[00:15:53] So like hosting me, hosting is never like a big deal, but I don't know. What did you think? I liked his comedy. I like, uh, you know, you and I talked about the 10 shows that made Chappelle, uh, and or the 10 greatest shows all the time. And we talked about comic view and I remember Dion Cole on comic view. So it's incredible to be there. He's like somebody who come from comic view, who's now hosting the image award. I'm like, this is so cool. Um, but yeah, he, he obviously, um, talked about how the fires as well.
[00:16:21] And he had made a joke, like, you know, they trying to blame DEI and black folks on the fire, but black folks don't really mess with fire like that. We got fire sticks, but that's about it. I kind of liked that. Um, he also led everybody in prayer, praying for, uh, you know, the Lord to cover us, including covering Kanye West and his wife, who needs to be covered by a bow tie or a scarf or something of that nature. I think he asked, uh, he said, bless the spirit, uh, in Kirk Franklin so that he would
[00:16:48] stop twerking and, uh, maybe wear some better clothes on stage, get that sexy red spirit out of him. I believe is what he said. Oh my God. I think he called him Twerk, Twerk Franklin. Uh, it's Franklin. Wow. Twerk Franklin. Wow. He also blessed Shannon Sharp with some correctly sized clothes because the mediums are not on the shelves for the guys who would like to purchase them. So it was a good prayer. I thought he did so good.
[00:17:18] Yeah. That's funny. Yeah. Um, but we also had some, some big names and presenters. Now, first of all, I did not know this. I didn't know Aldous Hodge had a brother and I definitely didn't know that he was on a crime show as well. This was so cool. Eldon, Edwin and Aldous Hodge. The Crime Fighting Brothers are up there, uh, giving away the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Award to none other than the Queen. Yes. Um, Outstanding Actress Carrie, Carrie, is it Carrie Washington that got that one? It was Latifah.
[00:17:47] Outstanding Actress in a Drama Award. Oh, Queen. Latifah. Oh, wait. I'm looking at the, what is, um, for Equalizer? Yeah. Yeah, for Equalizer. Yeah. Yeah. Um, yep. That makes sense. I feel like people don't give the Equalizer enough. Quain would hold it down for seasons. Honestly, I, it's so funny because I remember when it premiered, like, after the Super Bowl, uh, like a few years ago and I was like, hmm, I wonder how long that's going to last. And it still... It still is. It still won an award.
[00:18:15] And, and I've never watched, I've only watched one episode of that show and it was the one where Jada Pinkett came on when they were like, oh, it's a reunion of Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah. Yeah, it's the set it off episode. Yeah. Um, do you know how many seasons the Equalizer has been on for? Five, right? Five seasons since 2021. Yeah. The Queen is out here working and she got honored by the NWSAP, uh, Image Awards for that.
[00:18:44] Uh, we got Journey Smollett and Chloe Bailey, uh, giving out the award for, uh, Outstanding Actor in a Drama. And Michael Rainey Jr. from Power Book 2. Yeah. For Ghost. He won and it was his first win. He beat Aldous Hodge. Yeah. Beat Aldous Hodge and Cross. I was like, look, uh, Michael Rainey Jr. been grinding for a long time. Like this kid been on stage since before he could speak good. He was, uh, you know, he'd been, he was in power when he was a little, little kid and
[00:19:13] now he's the face of the show. So, you know, kudos to him for being a rising star in Hollywood. Could you see him doing movies and stuff in the future? You know what? I can. I think I'm still, it's so weird though. I still see him as like a 15 year old. Little kid. Yeah. I know. Like I'm trying to like break out of that mold, but his, his acting has always been good. I mean, good enough for people to hate him so much. It's like, you know? Yeah. I would love to see him.
[00:19:42] I would love to see him transition into movies. He kind of reminds me of like Tristan Wilde, AKA Mack Wilde, the rapper. Like Tristan Wilde had so much potential acting wise. Um, you know, he was in the wire. He was in 90210 and then it was like, he just couldn't make a jump to the movies. It's so hard for like our actors to like be able to break out, you know? Yeah. So I would, I would love that for Michael Reign Jr.
[00:20:12] Mm-hmm. We saw a couple other wins for Abbott Elementary for Outstanding Comedy. Um, I think The Bear was nominated. Why do people keep doing this? Stop trying to make The Bear a comedy. It's not a comedy. It's not. I don't care how many. It's not funny at all. It's, it's not a comedy. It's honestly the most stressful show that I watch right now. And I watched The Pit. And okay. So, uh, if you could. Okay. I love The Pit. I am like, it is so incredibly good. I literally have just been watching it for like the past four days. It's good.
[00:20:41] Just like over and over and over again. It's better on a binge. On a binge where you can just sit there for hours and just like watch as one ends and what it's like. Woo. Okay. I love that concept too. Like each episode being in real time. And the whole season is going to be over one shift. Yeah. Which is like 16 hours. Yeah. Cause we're eight episodes. And I'm thinking, is there going to be, anyway, like that's a different, that's a podcast for a different time. Go watch The Pit. And the cast is so diverse. Oh, it's good.
[00:21:10] It's a good, it's good. It's good. Other winners here. Cross. We talked about that here on Recap Kickback. As well as Ava Elementary, as I said. And Beyonce. She did it. Cowboy Carter got Outstanding Album of the Year at the Image Awards, which makes sense. You know, it's Beyonce. And if the Grammys finally broke her off, at least you could do this payoff, you know. We got announcements or I guess another award announced by Laverne Cox and George Wallace
[00:21:38] from our recap of this week, Clean Slate. And this is the first time that I'd ever seen what Clean Slate was about. I had no clue. I had never heard of it. Never seen these. I was like, oh, what do Laverne Cox and George Wallace have in common? Why are they up here? So I'm very excited to go check it out as they nominated the awards in Outstanding Actress in a Comedy. Again, The Bear was there. Shout out to Ayo.
[00:22:07] Kerry Washington nominated for Unprisoned. Mari, have you ever heard of Unprisoned? I've heard of it. I've not seen it. I've actually heard it's pretty good. Actually. Yeah. I think it got two nominations in the acting categories. So I'm like, I guess I gotta watch Unprisoned. How to Die Alone, recently canceled. How to Die Alone was nominated as well for Natasha Roswell. And the winner, of course, my girl, Quinta. Quinta wins again. I said, okay. Give it to things.
[00:22:37] Can we talk, but can we talk about, okay. Like, love the AACP Image Awards. Love it. But some of these categories, like Outstanding Character Voice Over Performance in Television. Cree Summer wins. No surprise there. Duh. But she won for the Rugrats. Did the Rugrats come back out? She won this year for the Rugrats? She won this year. There ain't no way, wait, what? Unless I'm reading this wrong, she won this year for the Rugrats. And I'm like, I don't know.
[00:23:07] Maybe it was a lifetime of achieving. I hope so. I truly hope so. But it does not look like that. Um, and then Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie Miniseries are Special. First, there are three actresses nominated from the same movie, The Supremes, That Earl's All You Can Eat, which I've never heard of. Oh, I heard about it. I didn't get a chance to watch it. It was. Okay, I'm looking it up now. But anyways, uh, I will probably watch it.
[00:23:35] But three actresses in the same category seems a little much. But the winner of that category, even though there's three, there was three actresses from the same movie, the winner of that category, Notori Naughton. Love her. We love her. Former 3LW. Little Kim. And what's her name in power? Tasha. Yeah. Tasha in power.
[00:24:00] She won for the miniseries television movie special, Abducted at an HBCU. A Black Girl Missing Movie. And now I'm like, well, now I got to watch that. You watched it. You watched it. Yeah. Because my mom calls me. And she's like, oh, child, this is a show that you got to talk about, Abducted at an HBCU. I'm like, what was it? She's like, Abducted at an HBCU. I said, mama, why are you watching that? Why? I said, what difference does it make if it's an HBCU? Why is she getting you in college?
[00:24:30] Now they got people thinking, oh, I can't send you to the HBCU. They going to get you. You going to get abducted out there. I watched that damn movie with my mama the whole time. She was like, is that what was going on? I said, mama, stop playing. 29 got nominated for that and won. She won. So now I got to watch that. Dang it. Yeah. It was on Lifetime, I believe, or something like that. Because my mama called me on the phone. With that title? Yeah.
[00:24:58] She was like, you got to watch this. I was like, mama, I went to an HBCU. I don't need to know. Anyway, I looked it up. Apparently, Rugrats came back out. It's out again. Insert Titus Burgess gif. What? Yeah. Rugrats is back, baby. Oh, I love it. In early September 2015, it was announced on Variety that Nickelodeon may seek to experiment with retooled versions of the classics, including Rugrats.
[00:25:27] And so in late February 2021, it was announced that the reboot will premiere on Paramount Plus in late spring 2021. And so it has been on since 2021. Oh! The increase number is in the cast. Duh. Like, I didn't watch that. JJ, the computer-generated version of it. I guess. I guess. No, no. I'm telling you. That's what it is. Oh. Yeah. That's why it didn't click, because... Oh, yeah. I'm looking at the pictures now. It's almost like CGI. Yes.
[00:25:57] Yes, it is. These kids don't like 2D animation anymore. So they put everything in, like, CGI computer-generated. They don't. And actually, we watched the whole first season. We would binge the whole first season when JJ was really low. Is it the same old episodes, but just in CGI? Or is it new stuff? It's new stuff. It really is. It's new stuff. And it is funny, because it's like, they tweak the characters a little bit. Like, Grandpa is a hippie. He's like, he's like a hippie.
[00:26:29] Betty is basically out. We're Howard at. I forget what Howard was doing. Yeah, we're Howard at. But Betty's basically out. And Dee Dee was like, she's a crafter with the she shed. Okay. I actually really, we really loved, like, the first season. And Tommy and the Baby's still up to no good. Yeah. It's crazy you watched it. It was like, what?
[00:26:58] I totally forgot. Totally forgot. It's like total sense now. I was thinking my Rugrats. Not the Hugh Rugrats. So you're still getting awards for this? Oh, yeah. His Rugrats ain't the Rugrats. You know what I'm saying? Like, our Rugrats is the Rugrats. We don't know what he watching. There's a funny episode where Grandpa, they set Grandpa up on, like, silver daters or something like that. Oh, no. And had women come into the house looking ready. Like, Angelica was trying to. With the makeup?
[00:27:28] Like, they came done up to the nines. Like, Angelica was trying to keep Grandpa, like, occupied. Yeah. And so she was on his silver daters or whatever. And she was just, like, swiping, swiping, swiping. So all these women just started showing up, like, trying to hit on him. And he's like, what are you? Why are y'all here? And then, like, three of them came at one time. And so they started, like, doing stuff for him, like baking him cookies. Yes.
[00:27:58] I'll give it to them. It was good. It was good. Okay. Okay. I respect it. It sounded like it's got the Mars seal of approval. So I appreciate that. I was looking at the cast. A lot of the OGs from, you know, the original Rugrats cast, like, they haven't run into that thing that the Simpsons have run into where, you know, the cast has gone a little too long. A little too long in the tooth. But yeah. So, Kreese Summer, huh? I mean, it's Kreese Summer.
[00:28:24] And she's got to have more than just, like, I feel like she's got, like, a handful of NWCP awards for this very, unless they created this just to give her one, she probably got a bunch of these voiceover awards, right? Yeah. Yeah. Has to. Has to. Um, can I tell you some of the moments that did stand out to me as I was watching it live? Sure. Uh, so, uh, Kamala Harris got the Chairman's Award. Um, and she was there.
[00:28:52] And she gave a rousing speech and it just pissed me the hell off all over again. Me, man. Why is this lady not President of the United States right now? You know why. I do know why. I know exactly why. But, like, they had a really nice touching package for her. And then she came up there and was like, I know it seems hopeless, but we gotta keep going. We gotta be vocal. This is not time to check out, basically.
[00:29:22] And I was like, damn it. Damn it. Like, Doug was right next to her, too. Yeah. Yeah. Mari, I put in my notes. She ain't talking to me because I'm tapped out. Yeah. Whatever she said, like, this is not the time to throw up your heads. It's time to roll up your sleeves. Well, my hands is tired of being up in there. I'm finna, I'm finna just go chill. You roll up your sleeves for a little bit. I'm finna, I'll call me in a couple years when it's time to vote again. I just really, let me, can I breathe? Can I take a break, please? I'm telling you.
[00:29:50] Can we, can we tag in these white people? It is their time. Somebody else. Step up. Damn. Do something. Because it is hard out here. Exactly. But she, she was so good. She was so great. Looked magnificent. Just spoke so eloquently. Unlike a certain orange dictator. It was just, uh, kicked me. It kicked me in the guts, to be quite honest. Yeah.
[00:30:16] Then the Wayans family got honored. That was great. That's the coolest thing ever. It was. It was amazing. I love seeing it live. The Wayans family will always be underrated to me. Like, always. Even when they're getting their flowers. Even when, I was like, just ain't big enough. I was like, where, like, you know, like, why haven't the Emmys done this and the Oscars?
[00:30:39] You know, like, I just, you, everybody needs to just take a turn just celebrating the family that Keenan Ivor Wayans just led into, like, this genius comedy revolution. They did. Incredible. Yeah. And the tribute was so good. Again, they did, they did their big one with these video packages, like, for real. Yeah. And then them going up there and them letting them get all that time to talk about. I don't know why Keenan wasn't there.
[00:31:08] Do you know why he wasn't there? Yeah. I don't know why he, yeah, he wasn't there. But, like, Damon and Marlon, they all really, like, just told his story from, like, start to finish. And it was, it was just amazing to see them get their flowers. Kim. Yeah. It was so great. It really was. I was so happy for them. I love the Wayans family for obvious reasons, because they are, they are them.
[00:31:33] But also, I like when you find a new Black actor out on the scene and you kind of squint and you're like, is that boy at Wayans? You know? Because that has happened to me at least three times. No, I'm not talking about David Wayans Jr. because he looks exactly like David Wayans Sr. There's another one out there in the wild. Yeah. But I think I watched. He got three names, I think. Yeah. I watched the movie Dance Flick, right, a long time ago, back when I was. Oh, yeah. I love Dance Flick. Yeah.
[00:32:02] And, like, every Wayans is in that movie. Craig, Damon Jr., Kenan, Sean, Marlon. I was like. Yeah, because Damon Jr. was the lead. Uh-huh. And then, I think. Is that a Wayans in Malibu's Most Wanted as well? It's just all over the place. And so, it's like. It's like. You see him and you get so happy. Yeah. Damien. Damien was in Malibu's Most Wanted. And so, I just. I love them. Everything they've done.
[00:32:31] Their story is incredible. Kenan Ivory Wayans basically dropping out of school in the middle of his engineering degree to be like, Hey, I want to go do comedy. And his mama being like. Boy, you ain't said nothing funny your whole life. This is the funniest thing you ever said. You're going to be a comedian. Only to know that this man is a legend in the making. He goes off with Robert Townsend. They lead to be comedians. Robert Townsend. They go. They go and write Hollywood Shuffle. And then, I'm going to get you, sucker. And then. One of my favorite movies as a kid. I've said this.
[00:33:01] Should not be watching that. Should not be watching that. I'm going to get you, sucker. And then. Ooh. Fox reached out to him. And said, hey. You could do what you want to do. You want to do. In Living Color. And so, In Living Color is born. Which also births something we talked about recently. The Super Bowl Halftime Show. Because without In Living Color, we would still be doing marching bands and shit at the Halftime Show. Did you know that story? No, I didn't know that. Wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait.
[00:33:26] So, way back when, the Super Bowl Halftime Show was all dry and raggedy and XYZ. And so, In Living Color was basically counter-programming the Super Bowl Halftime Show because nobody was watching it. So, they go and do this big spectacle during Super Bowl Halftime Show for like the 13 minutes that the Halftime Show lasts. And just completely suck all the ratings away from the football game for that time period.
[00:33:55] And so, the NFL responds, or I forget what network, but they responded at the time by saying, we can't let that happen again. So, what do they do? They book the very next Super Bowl and it is who? Michael Joseph Jackson. Boom. The Super Bowl Halftime Extravaganza was born thanks to In Living Color. Isn't that crazy? That is. When he did Heal the World? When Michael came out and stood there. That's how, that's what I say.
[00:34:22] When he stood there, Michael Jackson stood there and the crowd went wild for no reason. This is 1993. So, it's Heal the World, Billie Jean, and Black or White. There it is. And that is the Wayans' impact. And so, boom. If you didn't learn nothing, I'll recap your back. I gave you that little nugget. That was great. Halftime Show aficionado. You know? Yeah. Really? But yeah. Low Down, Dirty Shame.
[00:34:52] The Scary Movies. The White Chicks. Also, you name it. Jim Carrey was brought to us by the Wayans. Yep. J-Lo. J-Lo. My J-Lo. I apologize for that. J-Lo. My name is J-Lo. J-Lo. Rosie Perez. J-Lo. J-Lo Perez. Mm-hmm. Carrie Ann Anaba from Dancing with the Stars. Y'all.
[00:35:22] Give them what they deserve. It was 80% of the cast and crew of In Living Color were women and women of color. Mm. And that is just something that is not done. So, yeah. There you go. The Wayans' brothers. We could have did a whole podcast on that. We might have been to. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:35:45] And then finally, of course, the In Memoriam, which I was like, damn, damn, damn. Because you keep forgetting who died. And then you're like, no. Including John Amos. Mm-hmm. He was, so he's in the premiere of Suits LA. So it's like, I saw it. I was like, John Amos, I'm here trying to get a hypnotic advertising deal on Suits LA.
[00:36:14] And I was like, oh, John Amos is dead. It's so crazy that he's in the premiere. But yeah, the In Memoriam segment always gets me because people die, you grieve. And then you, like, there's so many celebrities and you got so much going on in your real life that you forget sometimes that you've lost such big names. When I saw Rich Homie Kwan, I fell so many. Yeah. Right. I was just about to say it. Like, ugh. Batman Scoop. James Earl Jones. The Kamei Motomo. Jacoby Jones. Ah! That's all Jacoby. Jacoby Jones.
[00:36:45] Oh, Lou Gossett Jr., Bill Cobbs. Famous Amos himself. That's what I'm supposed to do. And my girl, my girl, Sheila Jackson Lee with the braid. Lord. She got that braid wrapped around. She's like, Sheila! RIP to DJ Unk as well. DJ Unk, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a lot. I mean, so many to name. We also got our Quincy Jones tribute. You know, the Grammys did one. Yeah. I like this one better.
[00:37:14] Yeah. The Grammys were like, we're the white songs. The white songs. They were trying to understand. Bring me Janelle Monae. I said, no! Janelle did great, but everybody just can't do Michael like Michael can do Michael. So they let Quincy Jones, like you said, a beautiful video package of his stuff. And it was just amazing because you see all the work that he's done in television and movies and music and all that stuff at the same exact time.
[00:37:44] So there was that too. And then we get some other big award moments. The President's Award goes to my namesake, Dave Chappelle. As he gets awarded for his cultural impact, social commentary, his unique perspective on life, opening America's eyes to a lot of things, his artist activism initiative, and working with spreading awareness and helping with the Flint water crisis. It's Dave Chappelle.
[00:38:11] He is a legendary comedian for a reason, and they do honor him here. And then, Mari, the 6888 starts winning awards toward the end of this. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Because it was a great movie, and we covered it here. If you haven't listened to our coverage, go listen to it. It was great. Check out our 6888 coverage. You see how Carrie made sure she ran back out to thank Tyler, even though she didn't thank Tyler. Well, she made sure. She made sure.
[00:38:41] They ended up winning for, she wins for Outstanding Actress, and I believe they won for Outstanding Motion Picture as well, beating Bad Boys for Life, the Bob Marley movie as well, Piano Lessons, and Wicked, Mari, that came up empty-handed at the Image Awards. Yeah. Ebony Obsidian won for 6888. That was Carrie's right hand. Woman, yeah, in the movie, I believe.
[00:39:09] Yeah, I mean, I'm not surprised. That was such a good, good movie. It was great. Wicked, yeah, Wicked does keep coming up empty-handed, but I'm trying, I'm starting to think that it's because everybody knows that there's going to be a part two. It's something, I was making suspicion that they'll get the award for that season. Oh, I got you. Yeah, well, you would not be the only one surprised that Wicked did not win anything
[00:39:38] because our big winner, Entertainer of the Year, beating out Kendrick Lamar, Shannon Sharp, Kevin Hart, and Cynthia Erivo was Kiki Palmer. It's your girl! Yeah. Look, what we got to do to get Kiki on the podcast? Okay. I'd sell it for Elsie. You know, bring me Elsie. Oh yeah, Elsie too. I'd sell it for her. That's my girl. Elsie, you got a permanent seat here if you want it. Yep. Come hang with us. Come kick it.
[00:40:06] But Kiki said, I really didn't think I was going to get this award because of Cynthia and her hell of a run that she had at the end of Wicked. Yeah. Yeah. Great to see Kiki. I feel like Entertainer of the Year to me, like, yeah, it makes sense that Kiki won. You know what I'm saying? Like, to me, that's like cool. Cool. Exactly. Like, yeah. So I'm not surprised at all.
[00:40:34] Kiki been getting Image Awards since Akilah and the Beat. You know, she been doing, I mean, she been getting nominated for these awards forever. She got her eighth win. Eight wins for Kiki Palmer. It is so crazy to me. I think they dropped, I think Taraji was on stage as well because we had to show love to BET. This is the 45th anniversary of BET.
[00:41:02] When this BET Awards rolls around, they got to do something. They got to, you know, come on, it's 45. You don't turn 45 every day. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. We'll see. We'll see. Yep. We'll be there. You know, they talk about it. We going to see. We will be. Yeah. We will be there. Yeah. I do want to say you probably didn't see this because I don't, because if you watch
[00:41:27] it on streaming, but they kept playing the commercial for like this clothing brand, this black owned clothing brand. Yeah. And the commercial. Yeah. The commercial was like these young kids remaking like the end of the road. It was like, oh, there we go. Yeah. It was like the kids remaking it for their clothing line.
[00:41:54] And then the boys men came in and they're like, hey, what are y'all doing? And when I tell you, they played this commercial at every commercial break. I was like, what? Like, I didn't know. Were there not enough advertisers? What?
[00:42:15] Because it was because the NAACP likes to give money to black owned businesses. And this was a commercial for a black owned business, like a black owned clothing brand that they gave one of their, they call it scholarships, grants or whatever to. Yeah. But literally, I am not kidding you. We saw that commercial like five times. I was like, what is happening right now? I'm so confused.
[00:42:45] Yeah. I did not see that commercial. They had Nathan, Wanya and Sean on there. That's crazy. Yes. Yeah. And it was like, it was like at Juanmo and maybe it was like his, like one of his. Oh, it sounds like if it's Juanmo, it sounds like his, his, cause his name is Wanya Morris. Right. So maybe, maybe that's, or no, it's yeah. Wanya Morris. That's what maybe that makes sense. That was like the tag that they were like, they were, they were creating a TikTok.
[00:43:12] Like I said, they were creating a TikTok and the boys men came in like, what are y'all doing? They're like, we're trying to go viral. Like, it was like, what is happening? Yeah. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Well, those are the big moments from the NWCB awards. Obviously we missed some of the awards that were actually given out. Some of the big names that we saw, Janelle James, Eggo Nwodum as well was there. Devin Freeman from the Democratic National Convention was the one who, you know, gave, you know, gave the award to, I guess, Kamala as well.
[00:43:41] So we had a lot of big, big moments, but it was great. I enjoyed it. I thought it was very cool. It gave our people the flowers that we always talk about them not being able to get. And so I felt like it was time well used on some of the bigger names in Black Hollywood for sure. But that's it. That's the NWCB awards. Next, Mari, we do have to talk about some other award show nonsense right after this. Okay. We're back.
[00:44:11] And we got to talk about the SAG awards. Mari, I was looking because I didn't watch the SAG awards in real time. Personally, I like the SAG awards. I do because they be drunk. I can tell the SAG awards is loosey-goosey. You look out in the crowd and insert random starlet is out there like high-fiving and drunk with some other starlet. Like, you know, I was like, okay, this is kind of a little bit more laid back to me. So I was going over the nominees and the winners and stuff like that.
[00:44:41] And I was like, dang, you better show no love to the Black folks this time. We ain't do nothing. We ain't scratch the SAG awards, did we? I don't think so. What do I remember? I remember, see, and I don't even remember. I was going to say, I remember one thing from the SAG awards and I don't remember it. It was something I was like, that pissed me off. And I cannot, now I can't remember. Oh, yeah, that they keep giving awards to Amelia Perez. That movie was trash.
[00:45:11] Like, why are we giving awards to it? I don't think you won nothing. We did. Outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. Zoe Saldana won it for her horrible scene. Oh, then we did get something. We got one. We got Zoe. She scratched it. I don't want her to win for a horrible role. Like, I don't know. I don't. Yeah. I mean, honestly. If she won for Amelia Perez, she's like the only Black person I think who won something.
[00:45:39] Because it was nominated. Amelia Perez was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in Motion Picture. And it did not win that one. It lost to Conclave. Now, the thing about Outstanding Performance by a Cast. Yeah. Yeah. The thing about that award is that, like, across the last 10 years, that, like, ensemble cast accolade has been awarded to six films that went to the best picture at the Oscars, including last year's winner, Oppenheimer. So. Really? Yeah.
[00:46:09] And so, like, normally the SAG Awards is, like, the preview to what the Oscars is going to look like, because it's the same people voting. And so, if you get that one, you're supposed to get the big one, you know? Right. And so, Conclave got that. I think it might be over. I really thought, I've been hearing some big stuff about Anora, but I really, I think it might be over. Oh, yeah? I watched Anora. Yeah. It's fun. It's like, so, I think I told you this. It's like Uncut Gems. Just. Oh, yeah. Like, stressful.
[00:46:38] Less, it's actually a little less stressful than Uncut Gems. Uncut Gems was honestly insane. We both know this. It was, it was just too much. It's like the band. Two hours. Two hours of the band is what Uncut Gems was. And Anora was kind of like that. It was cute. I did like it, but essentially, it's like a Cinderella story type thing gone wrong.
[00:47:08] So, it was entertaining. Now, is it best movie entertaining? Like, to me, it didn't feel like it. It didn't feel, feel like it, but it was, it was fun. What I loved more about it was like, they, they, they employed what's called hair tinsel for her. Okay. And it, it was just amazing. Like, I couldn't stop looking at her hair. Like, and it was such a tedious process for them to put it in. Like, they had to tie the hair tinsel directly to like her hair.
[00:47:37] And it took like hours on set for them to do it. But I thought it was an, it was an amazing effect on like camera. It really popped on camera. So, if they got something for like hair and makeup, I, I think that would be really warranted. It was like the hair and makeup for it was really good. Okay. Most of the cast are strippers. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. You'd like it. Yeah.
[00:48:05] So, of the last 10 years, of course, as well, the number of award winners that go on to win Oscars for Best Actress is seven, eight for Best Actor, nine for Best Supporting Actress, and is a clean sweep for Best Supporting Actor with the SAG Awards and Oscars Award nominating the same, awarding the same 10 winners in that category.
[00:48:29] So, it's like, if you win this one, chances are you're going to take the big one. And so, I'm looking, who did we get for Best Supporting Actor? I saw that, I think. Karen Culkin. Karen Culkin. Look, Karen Culkin is the Culkin. Okay. He's the one. Yeah. This is the same kid. I don't know this movie though. A real pain.
[00:48:56] This is the same kid from Home Alone, but not the one that, you know, we know, right? It's not Macaulay. It's the one that'd be peeing in the bed. Like, that's Karen. This boy's come so far. I see an EGOT in this boy's future if he needs, if he wants it. This man is crazy. He's such a good actor. He's so funny as well. I remember his performances in, um, it's lost me. The show with the white people, they're rich. Oh, so such a good. Succession. Thank you.
[00:49:25] Uh, I remember that. And so, uh, I wasn't shocked to see that he got this, but yeah, it looked like the Oscars coming his way. Hmm. That'd be nice. I'm, I'm kind of reading the synopsis for the thing. I mean, when are the Oscars? When is the Academy Awards? I gotta watch this. Some of this stuff. Yeah. I'll watch it, but you know, I ain't gonna, I don't know what it is. And when it drops, I'll be there. Right. Right. I'm so mad that I still, like every time we go to start the substance, a child wakes up and interrupts us.
[00:49:55] And it's just maddening. And I, I hear it so good and I just want to watch it. And Demi Moore won for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role. And I'm, I'm upset that I have still yet to watch this movie. Yeah. I haven't seen it either. Um, the Oscars are going to be March 2nd, uh, 2025. So that's. Oh gosh, darn it. Looks like we got something to talk about tomorrow. Every day.
[00:50:25] Um, uh, yeah. Uh, big shout outs to, of course, uh, the, uh, Coleman Domingo or, uh, being our black nominee in outstanding performance for a black, by a male actor in a leading role for Sing Sing. Uh huh. Um, Abbott Elementary or, uh, SAG award winner for TV category, of course, for outstanding, uh, comedy series, uh, losing to only murders in the building, uh, Abbott Elementary and the
[00:50:55] bear again. Yeah. Yeah. Abbott Elementary and the bear, uh, both, all three of our actresses over there, uh, lost two hacks, uh, winner Jean Smart. And, uh. She can't keep getting away with this. But she did. That's it, Marty. That's all the nominees. That's it. That's all black nominees for the Tag Awards this year. Woo. Uh, but shout out to Shogun because they won. They cleaned up last, last time. They're cleaning up this time.
[00:51:24] Go off. That was so good. That, that was a great miniseries. Yeah. Yeah. And to one of my favorite shows. Look at the penguin. Look at the penguin. Colin Farrell for the penguin. Yes, sir. Oh my God. You have, oh, it's so good. I can't, there is not enough time in the day. But it's so good. It's so good. Like I was telling people to stop watching the show you're watching. Go watch the penguin. Like it's so good. I think I had to release James to watch it without me.
[00:51:54] I'm like, it's like, there's no time. Yeah. I want to, but I just don't, I can't. Yeah. Another one that I thought was pretty good. Uh, baby reindeer, Jessica Dunning and baby reindeer. Oh my God. Baby reindeer. I forgot that lady. So good. I forgot. She's. I said she needs to be under the tail. But she, that's, if that's acting, hey, she invented it. She, they rename it. Rename it. Cause she was in that. That was such a good show. Oh my God.
[00:52:24] She killed it. That show was, oh, that show was so good. Oh my God. I can't believe it. It's been like almost a year since that show came out. You want to talk about stress. That's another one of them awards. I was like, excuse me, man. Uh, yes, that's the Thag Award. So, you know, it was a good time. Um, Hollywood's second biggest night considering the Oscars is tomorrow or whatever.
[00:52:48] So we'll be talking about these same actors and actresses next week here on Recap Kickback. And Marty, that's it. Yeah. That's our, that's our Week in Black Entertainment here on Recap Kickback. It was fun. We talked about the SAG Awards. We talked about the ACP Image Awards. So much fun. Uh, so everybody make sure that you like the video. Tune in next time to see what we have coming up for you. Obviously, we're going to be talking about the Oscars because who knew that was tomorrow? Who knew that was around the freaking corner? Who knew that was coming up?
[00:53:16] Uh, and we'll be looking out for other seasons. That's why they call it awards season, right? Right. Okay, back to back to back to back to back. Okay, that makes sense. Yeah. You know, so whatever. Yes, exactly. Oh, but Marty, in the meantime, tell everybody where they can find you what you got going on. Of course, you can find me over on Blue Sky, aka The Good Place. We call it, uh, at MartyTalks Too Much. That's two, like the number two. Uh, you can find me over on Crime Scene. Me and Sarah Carradine cover true crime. The only way we can.
[00:53:46] Um, we just dropped, uh, the Fox Hollow Murders. Um, it had a very long, like, title. Like, uh, Serial Killer Playground. Like, you don't need all those words. But it's on Hulu. It was a four-episode docuseries, um, about serial killer Herb Baumeister. And we were joined by eight-time returning guest, Mark Blankenship. We had such a fun time talking about it.
[00:54:16] Me, Sarah, and Mark. Every time we get together, we all, we just cut up. Hardly ever is the property good, but we're always cutting up about it. And this is no exception.
