[00:00:47] Hey, what's up fam? And welcome back again to Recap Kickback. It's me, Chappelle. Back again to talk to you about movies, TV, and a little fashion, I guess, this week. And with me, as usual, she says not the fashion police, but I'm sure she has some opinions. It's Mari. Mari, welcome back. No, my opinions are not endorsements. They're all my own and they are based on having absolute no fashion tits. So take this with a grain of salt. I'm glad to have you back.

[00:01:15] I guess, you know, I gave you the keys again to the kickback. You know, we left the place pretty decent, right? After the book club. Oh, yeah, yeah. People seem to really enjoy the book club, Mari. How was that, the conversation between you and Kirsten? For the people who didn't catch that, who maybe didn't read the book. Oh, it was great. I honestly like if you didn't read the book, me and Kirsten were just cutting up for no reason.

[00:01:42] So I think you can still like if you I think if you enjoy reading people talking about what they like to read, you know, that that is a good chunk of it. Like we did it like we normally do our like our House of the Dragon coverage. The first part we talked about was real general terms, just the overview of the book. Talked about how we found the book and what our general tastes in books and stuff are.

[00:02:10] Give a little background on on our reading and stuff like that. And then we we give you ample time. We tell you the next half is going to be spoilers and speculation and theories and innuendo. So we so it's one of those those podcasts that you can enjoy, even if you don't know the subject material. OK, well, yeah, me and Kirsten just cutting up. Yeah, yeah. It looked like a good time.

[00:02:36] I saw Survivor 43's James Jones endorsing that book as well. So, you know, you guys are big fans out there of this series. And so hopefully you all were fans of the podcast. Let us know. Leave us the comments. Keep hyping that post up. We see some of y'all in the comments demanding more book clubs. So maybe we can do that later on. Maybe. Yeah, we'll have to see. And so I personally would love that because anytime we can bring something fresh to the listening audience, then I'm down for that for sure.

[00:03:06] So speaking afresh this week, we were trying to figure out what to talk about. Got some black entertainment news on the horizon. But also it was the week of the Met Gala. The Met Gala 2025 has now happened. And so if you're listening to this, you've probably seen the looks, but you have not heard our takes on some of the looks and the theme of the Met Gala.

[00:03:29] And so, Mari, this week's, well, this year's theme was Black Dandyism, explained from the 18th century roots to modern day expressions. That's this article by Ty Gaskins from Vanity Fair. But yeah, the theme of the Met Gala itself was Black Dandyism. And so I pulled some clips from that article just to kind of highlight the roots of Black Dandyism and so that people would know kind of where this theme came from and where these looks were inspired from.

[00:03:58] Are you familiar with Dandyism? Yeah. Yes, very much so. You know, the Harlem Renaissance basically is a whole curriculum. If you go to an HBCU. Exactly. English class. No, this is basically African-American studies. So, yeah, I heard, I swear, the Met Gala always just like sneaks up and like pops me on the back of the head. Like, what? Oh, it's happening?

[00:04:24] Like, I swear, I just heard this was the theme, I think, from this article. Yes, last week. And now it's like, it's here already. You know what I'm saying? Like, I remember I was like, oh, that's going to be great. When is that? And it's like, oh, it was today. I was like, oh. I'm the opposite. Yeah. Yeah. Maru, I'm normally tapped into the Met Gala. I like judging things. And so this is like, this is my time. No, that's great.

[00:04:50] I get to sit around in my sweatpants or with Mitzmack socks on and Jordan slides and a durag on my couch and be like, oh, I don't get it. I don't think it's on theme. So this is my perfect time for me to act like I know what I'm talking about and I really don't. But you're right. This is basically the Harlem Renaissance, right? Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Zora Neale Hurston, you know, the big names and how, you know, like their artistic contributions became fashion expressions.

[00:05:17] Do you recognize the guy in this picture I pulled here on our YouTube page? Um, the bald one? The guy right here in our hat. This is Andre Leon Talley. Stop it. Yeah. The late, the late great Andre Leon Talley. Isn't that a great pick? Yeah. Representing Dandy is at its finest. And so, yeah. So, yeah. RIP the legend. But you'd love to see this.

[00:05:42] You'd love to see this theme because I think a lot of people really did show up and show out for the Met Gala. Did you get into a lot of the looks? Uh, yeah. I mean, I did. I knew we were going to do this. So, I kind of wanted to save some of my, like, initial reactions for this. But I do. I did look at some stuff. And I really did think, like, first off, when they first announced the theme, I was like, oh, okay. I got a little scared. I was like, all right. All right. You know, I, yeah.

[00:06:13] I was like, please, please, nobody do something stupid. But overall, I think it was a pretty good theme because it's a simple theme that can be done extravagantly. You know what I'm saying? Like, the, not to boil down Black Dandyism, but the tailored fashion has been in for the past few years anyways.

[00:06:41] So, I like that this is a nod to our culture while also still being very fashion forward as well. Yeah. So, the Met Gala's actual theme is super fine, tailored in Black style, right? But there is the exhibit of the Met Gala, which is the Black Dandyism exhibit. And so, we're going to use that exhibit to then create looks that will go toward the theme of super fine tailored in Black style.

[00:07:10] So, if you saw somebody who wasn't necessarily dressed in, like, you know, what you would think of, like, when you see that picture that I just posted of Andre Leon Talley or, you know, like, a guy with a little hat on or whatever. Like, it's not going to be spot on all the time. All these people are not going to come in here dressed in, like, an androgynous way. But you are going to, like, speak back to the themes of Dandyism throughout the looks. And so, we're looking for bespoke tailoring, bold colors and patterns, accessorizing with purpose, and cultural fusion, okay?

[00:07:39] Because Black Dandyism doesn't just echo European satorical, I mean, satorial traditions. It incorporates global influences, African textiles, Caribbean flair, et cetera, et cetera. So, we're looking for all of that. So, when we go through these pictures, Mari, we're going to be trying to spot some of that. And I chose some photos from some pictures that would be familiar to the Recap Kickback audience.

[00:08:01] Some of the celebrities here are going to be very famous to Recap Kickback because we've talked about them probably more than most people have. So, first up, look at Dolce. It's the Louis Vuitton face tat for me, man. Right? I was like, what did she do there? Oh, yeah, man. Dolce. Clashing patterns. Yeah. She's so icy. Oh, my God. I could wear this. I would have told this.

[00:08:29] Y'all put my knees out, boy. I wear this, so I'm like this. Um, man, there you go. So elegant. Oh. Right. Yeah. The afro, of course. You always going to have me with the afro. And then, of course, look at IO over here. IO, so dope. Everything about IO. We always talk about IO whenever it comes to award season. We actually haven't covered any of IO's shows here on Recap Kickback. She made a guest appearance on Abbott.

[00:08:58] You know, but we haven't really got to dive into a lot of IO's projects here. Maybe one day in the future. Exactly. Let's see. Who's next? Coleman Domingo. Ooh, mister. Have that shit on. So Coleman. I'm always looking for Coleman at the Met Gala. Because he knows. He understands assignments. He does what needs to be done. We talked about him. What was the most recent show we talked about? The series. Coleman Domingo. Uh, he was in Color Purple.

[00:09:27] Oh, no. Right? Yeah. Yeah, but there's a show. Y'all covered the other show. I didn't watch it. What was it called? The racial show. The racial show, yeah. Oh. And it wasn't found. Something like, I don't know. I don't remember. Yes. We cover a lot here. But I know exactly what you're talking about. Listen, CD, we've talked about him on the zombie kickback for sure over in the Walking Dead coverage. So Coleman Domingo never, for me, never, you know, disappoints at the Met Gala.

[00:09:56] And then my boy Usher, who we've also talked about ad nauseum here. Now, I thought I should play it a little safe. Very, very much so. Sir, this is a black suit. Dude, I feel like I've seen him do like dandier things before this. I don't know, man. Now, the facial hair, I think, is kind of on theme. I think he kind of changed it up. Usher kind of got a different look on his face. Oh, okay. A new haircut, I think, is kind of different too. But everything goes pretty standard, Usher.

[00:10:24] We see the pieces, you know, the accessories, which are a big deal. But I mean, Usher, this is the Met Gala, man. Stop playing. Come on, man. I know. A pocket chain and a half scarf, not going to do it. It's not going to do it. It's not going to do it, Usher. But I do like the monogrammed scarf. I'm going to have to give me one of them. Okay. Let's talk about our athletes over here. Okay. All right. Up top, we got Angel Reese. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:10:54] Yeah. Angel Reese every time, man. Every time. They lucky she wanted to play basketball and not just wanted to come just be the fashion muse of all the designers, man. They lucky she playing basketball. That's all I'll say. I love this. It's a two-piece, like, tuxedo top, but a corset dress. I love this. This is great. Yeah. Angel Reese. And it's different from that. Like, we've seen, like, suits turn into dresses before.

[00:11:23] Like, that's a thing. But I love the two-piece-ness of it all. That's really cute. Yeah. Wow. And then down here at the bottom, Sha'Carri Richardson from our conversations about the Olympics. Sha'Carri, I was like, I don't know. Sha'Carri, I thought you could have did a little bit more with this. But I like the hair. You know her. The ornaments in her hair. The big balls. I thought they were pretty cool. Yeah. It's cute. I just don't know if it's on theme. Right. And it's like, it's there, but it's like, I just feel like you could have went further.

[00:11:53] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She looks pretty. Oh, yeah. Sha'Carri bad. She know it, too. So I was like, okay, she gonna show up. And then, you know, and then, of course, over here, this is Miss Simone Biles and her husband, Mr. Jonathan Owens. And I'll say this. Simone always looked good. But I think he kind of got the, I think he kind of ate her up, though.

[00:12:19] I saw some other images and I was like, I mean, his suit was, that's a bad suit, man.

[00:12:52] I'm not gonna lie. But he is, he's still in that show. Mr. Simone Biles did the thing here. Yeah. Put him some respect on. I think he earned his name, Jonathan Owens, on this red carpet, this blue carpet. Now, Coco Jones. You know, we talk about her a lot in our Bel Air coverage. And we have her sitting here next to someone who does not miss, who has not. My God.

[00:13:19] Brian Tyree Henry has not met an outfit that he couldn't wear. This man, every year on the Met Gala, him and Coleman Domingo, I'm looking for them every time. Every time. He looks so good. I want to talk about Coco, but I cannot get my eyes off of him. Like, look. This suit. The suit. Oh, my God. The red and black suit. Yeah. Yeah. This drapery on this cape. They, oh, my gosh. It could, it almost could have been like, you remember when they did like the, um, the, like Pope themed or the Catholic?

[00:13:49] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The one where Chadwick came in and ate everybody up. Mm-hmm. Yes. He looks so good in this. And give me face in the second, the second picture too. He don't fuck around. He don't fuck around. That's great. He got the haircut down as well. Like, hey, man. I love that. Give my boy Paperboy what he deserves, man. Oh, the blue. One of our first. Yeah. That's what I said. One of our first recap kickback all-stars of all time, Paperboy here. I mean, just.

[00:14:15] To be Paperboy and to be this at the same exact time, the duality of this. It's so good. And we're, we're watching, um, Dope Thief on Apple. Okay. With him. Really good. Yeah. He doesn't mess around. And then Coco. Coco. Love me some Coco. Again, super fine. Tailoring is the theme. And so you can see it. Yeah. It's there. You can see it. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah.

[00:14:39] The only thing I would say is I like the monochromeness of it, but because it's monochrome, you kind of lose a lot of the texture. Like, you can see the texture. But you don't know what it is if you get up close on it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. But maybe that's what they go for. Yeah. Coco always look good, man. Oh my God. The hair too. Look. Queen mother. Queen mother. Mother. Straight from Wakanda. It's Angela Bassett. My God.

[00:15:09] Then it should be illegal to look this good at this age. You know what I'm saying? Like, this is crazy. Everything about this is perfect. No notes. No notes. Absolutely no notes. I got nothing. Oh my God. Look at the see-through. Oh my God. Come on. Angela. Yeah. You can talk about Recap Kickback All-Stars. We cannot. We, we, there's probably a third of the episodes we have mentioned on Angela Bassett. We sure have. Yeah.

[00:15:35] Like, she completely, I mean, this is just exactly what you need. Next up, Whoopi. Now, let me tell you something about Whoopi. Okay. When I first saw this, I thought, okay, a fur coat, kind of a fur coat. Overcoat, kind of like over, uh, like a tuxedo type feel. No, no, no, no. Those are sequins. Those are matte colored sequins. They're individually tied together, sequins sewn together to make it look like that.

[00:16:05] Oh yeah. I found, I saw a video online of it. Completely changed my opinion of what exactly was going on here. Cause I liked it. But then I found out those were sequins and not fur. Oh yeah. That's how you do it, Whoopi. I was, I'm a big fan. Wow. Okay. Okay. Okay. I liked it. Ooh, and look at the shoes. Look, look at her shoes. Like, okay. I see the tailoring. I see the theme. I see it all. She got curves on the, on the suit too. I mean, I'm just like, man, Whoopi, come on.

[00:16:34] I like it, but the, oh, it's just something that's, I, I, the stopping of the sequence right there. I wish they went full down to the ground. I think that's what it's missing. Ooh, like a long ass, like a fur coat. Yeah. Cause it's an overcoat basically right now. Yeah. You're going to like fooling. And I think that because, and it's, and I know it's that because when I saw this first picture on the left, I was like, Ooh, look at that.

[00:17:03] And then when I saw the right, I'm like, I just stops there. Like, I don't know. Yeah. It's not too short, but she looks great. And if, if what you're saying is true, then that is tailoring. So, uh, overdid the brief, understood the assignment. Absolutely. I know. I went and found a Instagram video of the, the sequence being like sewn on. And I was like, Oh, this is crazy. Um, just really nice. Yeah.

[00:17:33] When this closeup picture, you can really tell like how well it's made. And whoopie be dressing. This is what whoopie, whoopie always going to be on theme. She gets it. She's been around long enough to understand the themes. Um, all right. Now let's get into some of our other all-stars here up top. I have no Quinta girl. Come on, man. That's a bad man. Oh my God. She is. And she, she's really, um,

[00:18:02] like really nailed, uh, accentuating her body for being so short. You know what I'm saying? Like, yeah, she doesn't look tiny. Exactly. This is really making her, it's given her so much length and height. And she looks so great in this. Wow. Quinta. Mm-hmm. Now at first glance, I was like, I don't know how I feel about this push of T. Mm-hmm. But then I thought about it. What is that? What is that?

[00:18:30] The, the color that push of T is wearing. Mm-hmm. I was like, just the color alone. I like the color. Because I, because I feel like his skin tone really go kind of with that color. Like it's like it brings out all the reds and stuff like that. Yeah. It's very simple, Mark. This is very simple. He's got like the embellishments at the top. I like it. Uh-huh. Yeah. And the cut is loose. It's like a black hair cut. Yeah. Like they would have had back then. Exactly. Very Harlem Renaissance. What is that on his color?

[00:18:59] Is it, is it different, uh, crystals or? I think it's crystals. I think it's crystals. Yeah. And it looks like it's not just like, I, I'm looking at it and it looks like there might be like black. It looks like there might like be like black, white, and gold crystals. Like it's not just. Just like, like dust it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No. So again, it's not a black suit. So I will give it to him. I like it. It's simple, but I think it's, it's better than what Usher did. No disrespect to Usher, who looked amazing, of course.

[00:19:29] But I think that like this to me was more on brand on the, you know, for this time. Um, down, down in our bottom left, only got one picture of her, but every Met Gala, you should be looking for Cardi B. Cardi. I saw the video of her coming down the, um, the way. I mean. I like this. It's cute. Like, it's like, um, I, what she did was she played with the fabric. Like, so you can still see it's tailored, but it's out of like a fabric.

[00:19:57] It almost looks like, what does that look like to you? Uh, Chappelle. It almost looked like a velvet. Is that velvet? In the woods. Coming to America. Coming to America. Is that velvet? Exactly. Crush suede. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And it's really good. It's really good. It's really good. It's really good. But she looked, I remember seeing it on video. It looks much better on video. Yeah. And now here we have the style. Oh. This man.

[00:20:28] Paying homage to Josephine Baker. Direct imagery to her. Josephine Baker's famous hairstyle that she had in this picture. The pole, down to the poles. So people were looking for a lot more of like the women wearing like the suits, right? The tail, the men, like almost like the men's tailoring. But there's still space for gowns and dandyism as well. And look at Meg. You know, I think she paid homage to the era. Yeah. I mean, I'm not going to, I'm not going to tell her no. Like, yes.

[00:20:56] Like, yes, Meg, yes. And then I sent you, did you see her like behind the scenes in Met Gala? About to, about to get kicked out. Yeah. She don't know how to act. If you want to go to her Instagram, if you haven't seen already, it's so amazing. She's, she's like behind the scenes with her phone. She's not supposed to have her phone, but her Angel Reese and Dochi are sitting there. Just cutting up. Just cutting up and, and trying the different food at the Met Gala. Telling us what the food is.

[00:21:26] Like, that was good. Like, I don't know about that. It was so cute. Just watching them interact. She's like, Dochi. She's like, keep eating. It was so funny. People in the comments are like, y'all going to get us put out. You know, you're not supposed to have your phone out. Who gives a shit? You're not supposed to have your phone. We're not supposed to see. Look, we're the, we're the plebes. We're the poor and the regulars. We're not supposed to know what they in there eating. Meg, you're stupid. They just let you eat, girl. You better stop playing. We only been around for a couple of years.

[00:21:53] If I'm the curator of the Met Gala, I'm like, yes, give a phone to Meg. Sneak it to her. Didn't somebody, does she do this every year or somebody else did it another year too? I want to. Oh, no, I don't think it's Meg every year. If it is, then this is a, this is a recurring theme. I think Kiki did it once. Yeah. Maybe Cardi. But like, I, like, this is what makes us still interested. Like, I would, I would be like, okay, I would pick a designated celebrity to like sneak in

[00:22:22] the phone if I was the social media team for that. That's a good point. You want that like, like exclusive footage, you know, like, oh, you know, that's how you show anything crazy. She just showed the food. She shows, she's like, I'm not supposed to have my phone in here. I can watch Meg eat heavy art. Yeah, that's fine. Her and Angel are supposed to be friends as well. Like, I just feel like that's a match made in heaven. I know. Yeah.

[00:22:54] We cannot talk about the Met Gala without talking about, oh boy. Damson. Now, you will, listen, I ain't gonna pop out in many of these options. But Damson, you're gonna have to send me the, uh, what's the management on that? That's my size. Y'all wouldn't be, y'all wouldn't be able to tell me nothing. Maybe. Or. It's the plaid for me. You know what I'm saying? Like the plaid arm. And then the plaid back too.

[00:23:23] I was like, put me in the suit. Put me in the suit. I saw, when I saw this video. So if you haven't seen this video, you guys see this video of him. He comes out in this race suit, which apparently, did you know he has a racing show on Apple TV or something? Uh, yes. I don't know if it's on or it's coming on. Yes. I think he's promoting his, his thing. Yeah. Yes. And so he comes out of this and everybody's like, who is that? Who is that?

[00:23:50] And they had, he had two people rip the, uh, the racing suit in half. He takes off his helmet to reveal, first off, this stunning, this suit. Mm. Oh, this suit is so beautiful. It's so good. Oh my God. Like, and then you were just talking about his, the skin tones, this, this and the skin tone. Let me in the suit. Let me in the suit. Let me in the suit. You like in the. Yeah.

[00:24:17] Like that's, I said, damn, I said, boy, I kill y'all. Y'all wouldn't even. Oh, oh. Y'all lucky. Oh my God. See, they let British people do all the fun stuff. Cause I definitely, y'all don't need, y'all, boy. This is the thing like you, this is like what you're hoping ends up on Fashion Nova. Like after. Yes. Yeah. When they're going, please God, let me get that jacket, man. Oh man. Yeah. No notes, man. This is so great. The charm on him. Oh my God.

[00:24:46] He looks so good. These gloves. These boots. It should have been me, man. It should have been me. I don't know, man. It should have been me. Now. I think Lauryn Hill probably had one of the best looks of the night. Look at this. This is really nice. Look at this. This is really nice. Look at this. Look at this, bro. I think she got it down. She got the style down. It's big. She got, she's got the train going. She's got, obviously, the big accessories going.

[00:25:16] She's got the afro. She's got the parasol. Bro. This lady owe me money. I was about to say. I'll allow it. Whose fault is that? Was it? Your first. Mm. You keep buying them tickets. Mari. What do you think about Lauryn Hill, man? I think this is great. I think this, this one, she so far is not the only person, but I feel like in the jewelry,

[00:25:44] it's really accentuating the African culture part of it, where it does, you know, it's not just the tailoring. It's bringing our culture to the Eurocentric vibe. And that's what that is definitely, definitely feels like. Yeah. Good for her. Yeah. And then that's Halle Berry over there. Halle Berry. Halle Berry. Jesus, Halle. Yeah. Yeah. We can, we can see you. We can see you. I see you, girl.

[00:26:14] Wow. Yeah. How old is she? Mm, she looked good. Yeah. I don't know, but it's fine. Let her do a thing. Um, yeah. Now. Oh, yeah. I saw this. You hear about the theme. You have to think about Janelle Monae. Mm-hmm. Uh, they've been doing the dandyism thing for a long time. So I'm not shocked by this. Uh, but, but of course, Janelle is going to give you a reveal as well. Shout out to Big Jane here, uh, with the initial kind of like business suit look at first.

[00:26:44] And then to shed that part and then get the more tailored suit, uh, with the monocle, of course, you know, we need eyewear, we need the accessories. Um, who you, this is what you expect from Janelle Monae. I don't know what else to tell you. Yeah. Janelle Monae. I mean, they, look at this suit. It's too, it's like, it's, it's like two face. Like it's. Yeah. Yeah. Like two personalities in the suit, man. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:27:13] And every stitch, you can see the stitches. You can see, I'm really looking at the second one because it is, it is. Yeah. The detail. Like, look how close it is. She, they look good. They look good. Yeah. I like the monocle and the hat. Like, that is cool. Yeah. I think it's one piece. I think it's connected. Yeah, it is. It's connected. Yeah. So dope. What was it? Like a, like a tent thing? Right. They know you just take it off. Yeah.

[00:27:43] It's crazy also that they're only going to wear this stuff one time. Like, you know what I'm saying? I know, right. It's so wild to me. Right. What happened? Do they donate this? No, they probably sell it. Right. They, I'd have to imagine. Maybe they, maybe they probably sell it for a charity, you know, because all of this is to raise money for the museum. Um, so. Or if they borrowed it for something. Yeah. I don't think anybody borrowed anything. No, this is crazy. Not like when Kim K borrowed the Maryland dress.

[00:28:09] I didn't include Kim K in this, uh, in this slideshow because I wouldn't exactly consider her a recap kickback all-star, but, um, but. I didn't see her. I didn't see what she did. She was good, man. She was good. I'll give her that. You know what I'm saying? I mean. She was good. Yeah. Now. She does really. Here is the winner. Oh. Here is the winner. Here is the winner.

[00:28:39] Look at the, look at the cape, like the cape. Oh, look at the shoes. Yeah. Look like, look, Tiana won. Tiana won. She be doing that. Tiana won. She won. Look at it. Oh, look at that. I had to get another angle for you, Mari. That she won. Wow. With, with the velvet do-rag underneath the hat with the three musketeers feather at the top. Dang. And the jewelry is placed perfectly. And the cane, the tailoring.

[00:29:08] That big ass flower on her lapel. That's amazing. Yeah. There's your winner. Oh my gosh. I'm sorry. There's your winner. There's your winner. So, yeah. Oh my God. That's beautiful. The red. I don't know. Somebody whispered, said, y'all should wear some red because it looks good on every single person. And really, it's like several different reds on here. Like she's doing like fuchsia. But then like the gloves are red, red.

[00:29:38] And then it's red and black in here. Yeah. It's a burgundy. But I'm telling you, the cape, the cape is crazy. Like it's a coat. Yeah. It has like eight panels to it. Yeah. I know that bad boy was heavy. I know that thing was heavy. And then like you said, crazy heels, crazy shoes, man. Those heels. Yes. Look at those shoes. Tiana ain't never missed. Yeah. Yeah. But she ain't never missed. Never. Not one day in her life.

[00:30:08] Never missed. Nope. She's been popping out since her super sweet 16. Super sweet. Why are we both being? Because we were born at the same exact day. Yeah. So those were my standouts for sure. Of course, there's some honorable mentions out there. Kim K did a great job. I do. I do agree with that. Zendaya. There's a little controversy on the red carpet with Zendaya because there's another person

[00:30:36] out there who is wearing a very similar outfit than Zendaya. Did Law style her? I believe so. Hmm. Yeah. It felt a little subdued. Or maybe it was just... Let me... I'm bringing up the picture. It's cute. Okay. It's cute though. I believe it was Anna Sawai who was wearing the other red carpet. But I know they're very similar. I think Zendaya's was better anyway. Zendaya. I'm looking at it right now.

[00:31:05] She looks good. I mean, it is just... If you look at the side by side, like it looks like they're very similar outfits. Anna Sawai? Sawai. S-A-W-A-I. Yeah. I believe that's how you say it. I could be saying it wrong. So my apologies. Anna. S-W-A-I. S-A-W-A-I. Oh, I see. Yeah. And hers is very similar. Yeah. Because I'm like, hmm. Oh, no.

[00:31:38] That looks... If I was her, I'd have left. How does that happen? It's a good question. Oh, no. Yeah, I would have left too. I probably would have been like, all right, Zendaya, you got it. But again, I do think Zendaya's suit has a lot more detail to it up front as far as like... And then obviously the tailoring for Zendaya is always going to be ridiculous, like every time. So, you know. It's resting. Rihanna? She pregnant again? Okay.

[00:32:08] You know, I didn't include her. Get off of her! Get off of her! For the love of God, we get it. We know. We know. We get it. We get it. Oh, my... I was like, wait. I was like, is she pregnant again? I was like, or is this the last pregnancy? I was so confused. No, new baby. Who this? Is this four? This is three. This is three? This is three. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, she can make everything but an album. That's all I'll say.

[00:32:38] She's doing everything but making me music is what I'm mad about. Tiny human suits. I'm making stools over here. Right. She's making makeup. She's making clothes, underwear. But look, look. Okay. Look at the images between Zendaya and Anna. I just feel like Zendaya's with the buttons, the double-breasted... What is that? Like the vest. I think that you got the colors are kind of better in there. I mean, they're both white, but it does look like it's ivory.

[00:33:08] Yeah. Yeah. It's tough. But look. But even the tailor... Look at even the hemline on Zendaya. It's a different look. But it's very similar. Very, very similar. So this kind of feels like to me, I wonder if this is from a collection, like somebody's spring collection or something, and Zendaya's probably wearing the actual piece. And then... I don't know.

[00:33:35] The old girl was just inspired by... I mean, I don't know. That's what it feels like. Because that styling and all that, like the hat, like that's too similar. You know what I'm saying? And what Zendaya's wearing doesn't look like a custom, like you would see like Teyana Taylor's or Damson's. It doesn't look custom, you know? So I truly wonder if... Let me see if they say who she's wearing.

[00:34:05] I believe it's Louis Vuitton, if I'm not mistaken. They're both inspired by Bianca Jagger's wedding look when marrying Mick Jagger in the 70s. And so... Oh. And then Anna is wearing Dior. So, yeah. Why would we be referencing Mick Jagger's wife at a Black Dandyism joint? I think it's the suit. The fact that she wore the suit at the wedding.

[00:34:34] And so we're doing the super... The tailoring part of the, you know, the Dandyism. I wonder if I can find that wedding picture. That's what I really need to find. Because that way we can kind of get into the imagery of that. But... Yeah, it's tough. This is tough. Yeah, this is tough. I mean, like, the thing about the Met Gala is I think the point is to stand out. And it's really hard to stand out when you're dressed like someone else. Somebody else, yeah. It's tough.

[00:35:02] Now, I did find a Page Six article with the inspiration on there. So I'm going to share the screen so we can see that. And then you can kind of see where they were taking their look from. Here we go. We have... Yeah. Yeah, we have right here... Not there. Six was like, buy the ad. Like, no, we're not doing that. There you go. Okay. Yeah. So it's... The concept is there.

[00:35:31] So we know they have inspiration. But Louis Vuitton and Dior kind of were on the same page with this one. And... Yeah. Yeah. And that's what I kind of meant. It's like there has to be a similar inspiration because that is just too on the nose. Yeah. I will say this, though. It's kind of a badass move at a wedding, man. You know? Like, you know, so many people are expecting the big dress or whatever.

[00:35:58] But to pop out and hear the photo of Bianca and Mick together. You know? She kind of did things. Yeah. She did things. I'll give her credit for that one. She kind of ate that. Yeah. So... Yeah. So that's our Met Gala 2025 coverage here on Recap Kick-Up. We did it. Yeah. We don't know nothing about fashion. So if you have any strong fashion opinions, let us know in the comments. Let us know. Yeah. I think I miss Kiki Palmer as another honorable mention. Lizzo looked so good. Oh, my God. Yeah.

[00:36:28] She looked great. Yeah. Yeah. So many people showed up and showed out. Some beautiful Black representation at the Met Gala as well. And so, you know, shout out to everybody who listened to that and enjoyed our commentary. But again, if you disagree, let us know in the comments. Or email us, recapkickback at gmail.com and let us know. Mari, we now have to talk about the Black Entertainment News of the Week. And I really want to focus on what's coming next. Okay?

[00:36:58] So it's the month of May and we got a lot of shows and movies and stuff like that on the horizon. And so coming to streaming service this week, May 6th. So it should be out by the time you hear this podcast. Untold colon shooting guards. Unpacking how a gambling dispute between Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Critton led to guns drawn in an NBA locker room. Were you familiar with this? Yes. I'm from D.C. So. Yes.

[00:37:28] See, I was not. So the funny thing is, like, I knew about, like, the, like, Gilbert Arenas around here is, like, I mean. Yeah, he's a household name. He's a joke. Yeah, yeah. It's the whole thing, a joke about him bringing a gun to the locker room. But I didn't know. I don't know the, the untold story about it. You know what I'm saying? I just, I just, we all just knew Gilbert Arenas brought a gun to the arena. He served some time. Da da da da. Da da. I didn't even know this other dude's name.

[00:37:57] I always thought, like, I always thought he just brought the gun to the arena and somebody saw it. And then he, like, I didn't know it was like a. So I'm excited to look into that. So I do about the story, but not the story, I guess. Oh, okay. You feel like watching the trailer? Oh, yeah. Let's do it. All right. Let's do it. So if you are watching on YouTube, then you may or may not see a trailer.

[00:38:22] But if, if there is no trailer on YouTube based on our licensing and copyright, then guess what? You should be listening to the audio version of this. Go to recapkickback.com slash subscribe to check that out. Because if not, we're going to have to cut this out. So we're going to play it anyway for our entertainment. And you might get a chance to see that too. If you check out our YouTube stuff. So here we go. Hey, player at 19. You have nothing but idle time. Pocket full of money. You can do whatever you want.

[00:38:49] There's always this line between being a prankster and going too far. And I was always on that line. It's dangerous in there. They said, don't get caught up in Gilbert Arena's antics. But he made his threats to my life. Say something off the wall. You keep talking about fighting. I play with guns. Our decisions that day ruined his life. When I get to the locker room, there is guns on my seat.

[00:39:16] You said you was going to shoot me, so I gave you guns. He said, what I need you for? I got mine. People are screaming and running out. Life is about choices. But I feel like I'm losing control. That locker room situation put him on a road that he was not wanting to be on. Atlanta police have issued a murder warrant for former Washington Wizards player Javaris Critton. All I know how to do is be honest, so I'm going to cut the bulls right now. Woo-wee.

[00:39:47] Yeah. So excited to watch that. Me too. We're going to be watching it and talking about it on the Nothing But Netflix podcast this week. The podcast I host with Ross Estonino sometimes. But we're going to have the Duo Sports & Stuff podcast. Deontay and Dane, who you may know from our Madden coverage and for our coverage of Clipped and several other shows here on Recap Get Back. They're coming back to talk to me on the Nothing But Netflix podcast. So check that out.

[00:40:14] Nothingbutpod.com to keep up with that and to see our coverage. And over on Crime Scene, I'll probably do a mini review about it. Maybe Sarah and our guests will get in on the action as well. But yeah, definitely something we're excited to talk about. You can go to CrimeScenePod.com in order to subscribe wherever you get the podcasts. Yep. All right. And up next, Usher, Rendezvous in Paris.

[00:40:44] In cinemas, started back in September, but it will now be available on BET Plus as of May 8th. And so the film... Wait, this came out last year? What happened in movies and theaters, I guess, around the world. I guess it's probably limited theaters. Oh, okay. Usher tour. But, you know, very similar to like the Beyonce renaissance and all that kind of stuff where or like, I guess, what's the homecoming? You know, where we get to our concert and then we turn it into a movie. BET is doing that too.

[00:41:13] So the film pulls from sultry intimacy of Usher's Las Vegas residencies, dressing it up in French elegance and delivering show-stopping detail. Custom costumes, immersive lighting, and a track list that spans three decades of hits from Yeah to You Got It Bad to deep cuts and fan favorites. It's more than just a concert. It's an invitation to witness the icon behind the hits over on BET Plus. We love Usher. I don't know. I mean, there's nothing else for me to really say. I'm a B. Usher fan. I always have been.

[00:41:43] I always will be. It's just, he's that guy. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. I'll be checking out. I really do like this whole turn a concert into a movie type thing. I think they should do it more. You know what I'm saying? Because sometimes you just can't get to them, you know, for reasons, like plenty of reasons. And I also think they should do that with Broadway more as well too. Oh, you know, I got the bootleg for Hadestown. I was watching it the other day. You want that?

[00:42:12] I got the bootleg if you need it. It's so good. It's so good. You ever want to see just, it's based in New Orleans. Like, look, don't let me go off on a tangent. If you need that thing, I got you. Just, I don't really like that. I've been telling you, you should watch Epic the Musical for a minute. I do need to get to that too. I think you should actually do a reaction video to it as well.

[00:42:37] And people should watch you watching it for the first time as somebody who is, plays in, you know, as a band person. I am a band nerd. Yeah, that's me. Yes. Instruments play like a big part in the musical. Like, and it's really good and you should react to it and break it down. I wonder if our listeners would love that. Okay. That's all I'm going to say. Yay, Usher.

[00:43:01] Yeah, let's watch the Usher trailer and see what Usher Rendezvous in Paris is going to be like. Okay. So let's see. Cue that up. Potentially. If y'all don't, if you miss it, you miss it. Sorry. Everybody can't see me. They snatched it. I know. The scenes that you put into this moment, you are walking through. She being the voyeur of my mind.

[00:43:29] Allowing you to have a peek into the zone. City of lights. I came here to find something. Drifting in a river I cannot control. Let's go. Give him. Got me like my God. So.

[00:44:14] Okay. All right. Usher. Okay. I have to check it out. I didn't make it to the tour. That was one of my big regrets last year, that I did not get to. I didn't see him in the residency. And then when the Super Bowl happened and he did his big thing, I was like, well, I'm never going to see him now because the price is about to be sky high. And everybody going to go. And so if you saw Usher, great for you. Congratulations. Whatever. You guys favorite. But me, I will be checking out Rendezvous in Paris on BET+.

[00:44:45] Next up. Coming to theaters. Shadow Force. Starring Kerry Washington. It's about an estranged husband and wife with a bounty on their heads who must go on the run with their son to avoid their former employer, a unit of shadow ops that has been sent to kill them. So feels like a little Mr. and Mrs. Smithy. Not necessarily exactly not on the nose, but we've seen stuff like this before, right? Spies were a couple and now they have to fight together. You know. Tales all the time.

[00:45:15] Yeah. But Kerry Washington doesn't do action often. You know, we talked about Viola Davis. Now, you know, doing several option roles at this point. Can you think of another Kerry Washington action movie? No, I can't. I can't. I wonder if her production company is doing this too. Yeah. I don't remember who's who was producing it. Oh, it's Lionsgate. It was a Lionsgate film.

[00:45:44] And, you know, they Lionsgate used to be where you go to all the for all the black stuff. OK, it still might be. But back in the day, if you saw Lionsgate, you knew it was going to be some foolery. So in theaters May 9th this week, it's starring Kerry Washington, Omar Sy, Mark Strong, Divine Joy. And Method Man. That's the cast. Method Man. I forgot he was in it. And so make sure you all tune into that. And you can check out the trailer because I have pulled it as well. Y'all want to check that out.

[00:46:13] Make sure you're on our YouTube page or or maybe not. Maybe not on our YouTube page. I really can't wait till we post this so I can find out what they're going to do to us so I can quit prefacing everything with it might be there. I don't know. Right. Yeah. So here we go. So let's share our screen and get Kerry Washington up here. See what she got going on over on the Shadow Force.

[00:46:44] Cold shot. Show me what you got. I mean, that was amazing. Oh, I did see this. Because that's Lupin. Yeah, that's Lupin. Never. What? Come on, Dad. There isn't a distance you can travel or a hole dug deep enough where I can't reach you. I can't help but feel a little flatter. I'm strong today being a bad guy. Life is getting shorter by the second.

[00:47:17] We've been tracked. We've been tracked.

[00:47:54] I'm not going to even fear anymore. We've got the hunters now. Then we need help. Auntie and I are gunning for Cinder. We can burn his ass down. Hell yeah. Now I can drink today. Yeah. Hey, May 2nd? May 2nd. What do you want with me, Jack? Keep coming. I'm going to get the butt guys. Are they assholes? Hey! Oh! What?

[00:48:27] You took the thing I love most. That isn't me the thing that you love most? I care about my family and I will kill to protect them. Got to get the lip quiver. Got to. What do you got? Two rounds. I got one. Do you think maybe I should get the extra? It's not an extra. Yeah, but you know, I mean, usually I'm a better shot. Usually? Yeah.

[00:49:01] Emily over everything, Mark. This is such an honor. Can we play some music? We like Wu-Tang Clan, little man. Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothing to fuck with. Woo! Jeez. Okay. Can you bring that poster back up, though, for me, please? Oh, yes. Absolutely. Okay. What's up? Okay. It feels like they lightened his skin a little bit, because I couldn't tell who he was from

[00:49:30] this poster. Oh. I mean, he is very dark, so they would have had to do something to make sure you could see him. I guess. Yeah. I was like... If anything, they made her darker, because they kind of look about the same skin tone, you know, based on maybe it's the contrast. Who knows? But yeah, I didn't recognize him at first until I was like, oh. Right. Yeah. Exactly. All right. Exactly. All right. Uh, and... Reimagined Judy Blume classic. What?

[00:50:01] Yes. So, Forever on Netflix. Coming May 8th is a reimagining of Judy Blume's novel, Forever. Follows the emotional and intimate journey of two Black teens, Keisha Clark and Justin Edwards, as they navigate the complexities of first love, identity, self-discovery, set against the vibrant background of L.A. in 2018. They talk about all their firsts. First kisses, first heartbreaks, and first time saying I love you. So I watched the trailer on this, and I thought, this ain't for me. But I'm sure it's for somebody.

[00:50:30] Uh, I'm not really like the, like, coming of age love story guy. That's not really, uh, me. Um, but there was something very interesting in the, in the film to me, in the trailer, that I really couldn't quite understand. Now, it is a two-minute trailer, so I'm not gonna play it for you, because it's just like, we're, uh, you know, let's keep it tight here. I mean, it's a long trailer. Um, play the trailer. It's gonna get, it might get cut out anyways. Yeah, it's probably gonna get cut out. That's why I was like, it's a two-minute long trailer. So they might get, they don't get us. If we're gonna discuss it, I haven't seen it. Okay, okay.

[00:50:59] Well, I'll play the trailer, but again, it is long. And also, you know, YouTube probably not gonna let us. But if, if, for instance, you want to hear the trailer in our real-time reaction, make sure you go to our audio version, recapgetback.com slash subscribe to download the audio. Um, we'll get to that in a second. Uh, and so, uh, yeah, let me go ahead and play our trailer here, and then we can react to it forever coming to Netflix, um, this month. At least I thought it was coming to Netflix.

[00:51:29] All right, there it is. Mm. I said, it's not playing. All right. Here we go. You have no idea who I am, do you? Keisha Clyde. Wow. Low key. I've always had a crush on you.

[00:52:03] Hey. Will you be my girlfriend? Stay. Woo! I really like you, but my life is real messy right now. What does that mean?

[00:52:31] I have to tell you something. We want to talk to you about Keisha. I mean, what about her? You've got a lot on your plate, Justin. Should you be dating her right now? You're just weeks away from getting that scholarship. Don't let that boy distract you.

[00:53:01] Early decision is your best shot. Just have it all planned out, don't you? No, we have a plan. You don't have to worry about that. I think we have something good going. I'm always going to be here for you. Forever?

[00:53:32] Oh my God. It's a good trailer. That was so cute. Yeah, it's a good trailer. It really is. Oh my gosh. I wonder what the hell happens in the middle. I said, okay. Yeah, I said, what did she do? They're like, I don't know if this is a good time for you to be with her. I was like, well, I mean, what happened? What'd she do? I think she's about to go off to college or something like that. It seems like she's about to hit it big. Yeah. What the hell is going on? That's why I popped up. Yeah. Yeah. Look at that. Interesting.

[00:54:01] Yeah. Okay. I got to watch it. Like, I'm not a big, like, romance-y, fartsy person. But like, that seemed really nice. That seemed, that was giving me like, love and basketball flashbacks. Like, that's how cute it was looking. Judy and Bloom are, are they mad? Since this was like a reimagining? Oh, they don't read. They don't read. They don't read. They don't know. They don't.

[00:54:31] They don't. All right. You got to read. Yeah. Yeah. They might care on principle, but they don't, they don't read. Stop it. They don't know. Yeah. They don't know. I'm like, I read this book. Like, no, you didn't stop it. So yeah. Also, coming to Netflix. She the People. Now, have you heard of She the People? No. Well, it's from our guy, TP. Tyler Perry is back with his big old Netflix contract.

[00:54:59] And this time, it looks like LaVita Alize Jenkins will be our main character. We're getting two drops. Part one being in May and part two being in August. And so this is a comedy series about the Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Dunkerson, who runs a successful campaign and now must figure out how to thrive under a sexist and condescending governor while attempting to keep her family in line now that they're all in the public eye.

[00:55:27] So when I first saw it, I thought like, oh, maybe this was like she was going to be president or something like that. You know? And then, yeah. And then I watched the trailer. I was like, oh, this is funny. I actually wasn't expecting it to be a comedy because it's, you know, Tyler Perry. It's Tyler Perry, yeah. Right. But don't get me wrong. Tyler Perry does do comedies. Like, I get that. But, you know, he's been really leaning into some of the drama lately, or if not, dramedies. And so this one does feel like almost like a pure comedy, Mario,

[00:55:56] but I'll let you be the judge of it. Let's see. And this actress, I will always call her Levita Alize Jenkins. What is her name? What's her real name? Do you know? Is it? Oh, God. It'll come to me. I used to know. I've been calling her Levita my whole life. Terry J. Vaughn. Okay, I knew it was going to come to me. You're still Levita to me, baby girl. All right. So let's cue it up.

[00:56:24] I am looking forward to being the next lieutenant governor of our great state, Mississippi. I hate this politics shit. Mama, have you been smoking weed? I can't. That's the best way to do it. I can't. I can't. I'm ready for duty, sir. And who are these, love, LaPose? This is my family. You're moving to the lieutenant governor's mansion.

[00:56:53] The floors are beautiful. We can't even see the floors because of this roof. Well, who is that? They're the security. He could be a little man. She's saying, well, she do need a man. She need a man. He's a candidate. She's right here with her children. Gentlemen, that is chief of staff. Doesn't lieutenant governor get to choose her own staff? In most cases, yeah. Why not this case? Huh. I'm going to need some dinner and a lot of wine.

[00:57:23] I would like to be more involved. You mean well, but politics doesn't. Is that racist? Because I saw her do it, so I thought I could do it. Okay, I was doing it because my hair itched. Oh. Bitch. Girl. Girl. I think I can make a difference. You just be a good girl, all right? And I really don't think that he thinks I'm qualified. Girl. Do you know where you are?

[00:57:51] Have you looked at the power that you have here? Don't come for me. What you gonna do? That bad bitch gonna show up? Up my shoulders. Uh-huh. When you want something and you earn something, you fight for it. It is my heart's desire to do what is best for those who are overlooked. Do you know who this is? Mary J. Blige.

[00:58:21] I know we was about to be attacked by all of Nick Cannon's kids at once. They are going higher. That's she the people. The gamut of emotions. I felt everything. I felt everything. I almost laughed at the Mary J. Blige. That was good. It's like, Mary J. Blige. Okay. I guess, TP. I guess I'll watch it.

[00:58:51] We'll check it out. As y'all's official Tyler Perry correspondence, we will be there on the scene to talk about she the people coming at the end of this May. And then, you know, as I said, second part of this will be concluding in August as well. Got two more things I want to highlight before we go. This one doesn't have a trailer out, but Gerard Carmichael is back. He's back with HBO May 24th. His new stand-up special called Don't Be Gay.

[00:59:16] The Emmy Award winning comedian is teaming up with HBO once again. This marks Carmichael's fourth special with the network. Wow. Yeah. We're in for another raw, revealing, and razor sharp offering that blurs the line between vulnerability and comedic brilliance. Gerard Carmichael, I think he used one of his stand-up specials to officially come out as being gay. You know, it's crazy. I was watching that with Jacob Jones when we were in New York.

[00:59:45] The first time we went to, yeah, the first time we went to New York for our live show way back when in 2021. 2021. Yeah. 2022. 2022. 2022. Oh God. Not days, numbers, math. Okay. 2022. Yeah. I ended up having to stay another day and Jacob Jones told me, oh yeah, come over to the crib. And I went to Jacob's house and he was like, hey, have you seen this? I was like, no. And we watched it. I was like, this is really good. Gerard Carmichael is a very interesting human though.

[01:00:11] And so I'm very, I'm very interested to see exactly what he has to say this time, but it's always good as far as I'm concerned. Are you a fan of Gerard? Gerard Carmichael is a very, very good. I, I, I, I wanted to watch the special Rothaniel, I think was the last one or something. Like I haven't been able to, I haven't watched his, his comedy and I've been meaning to get into, I heard his TV shows was like interesting. Yeah. It was like trying to say, I mean, you can date.

[01:00:40] And also he was doing like weird thing. He was like confessing his love of Tyler, the creator, but Tyler creator was like. Exactly. So I, yeah, I heard. Yeah. So, um, no, I have not, but I, um, I want to, I want to, I think, I don't know if I've told you this, but I, I, I don't know, but like comedy, I'm not like standup comedy

[01:01:07] has just not hit for me a lot lately just because of the politics of it all. Um, so it's really, it's really hard for me to, to find like comedians that I actually like to listen to and watch. Um, I think I did tell you, I went to like, uh, came on stage, uh, two years ago. I went to his tour with him, Tony Baker, uh, to hear more.

[01:01:34] And they had, Oh, I forgot Brandon something who opened for them here in DC. And it was the absolute best comedy show I've ever been to in my entire life. Like, and, and literally Howard throws comedy shows who, and we've had like the big names come here. It's just, it was such a good show because it was like, like I didn't feel, I was, I was like, I didn't feel uncomfortable in there. They weren't making fun of oppressed communities.

[01:02:02] It was, it was so good. It was, it was four black men, four different sets that just were incredibly funny, just incredibly funny without like punching down. Like it was amazing. We went and saw it in person, like for a date night. It was great. So I'm like, standup comedy is just not my thing literally. And, but I think that's why I think I would like his stuff because his stuff is kind of

[01:02:29] like, I've heard people be like, where are the jokes when they talk about him? You know, conversation like a, like a Dave Chappelle now is less, obviously less, uh, problematic, but definitely the same vibe of like, it feels very intimate. Yeah. And I, and the last one I watched, uh, the last comedy special I watched was Jamie Foxx, the Jamie Foxx's new one. Yeah. That's another example. Exactly. And I, I really liked, I really enjoyed that one as well.

[01:02:57] So I'm just not a comedy girly. Um, but, uh, Gerard Carmichael's work has always intrigued me. I just never had that, you know, you just, you, it's on that list, that, that long list of everything I need to watch, you know? Yeah. The Carmichael show, people used to send me clips of it and be like, Hey, that guy, he's like the, the, the character in the show is you, it's you. That's you Chappelle. I think we used to, it used to be the, the only, like I've gotten, I've got a lot of celebrity lookalikes in my day. Gerard Carmichael is always consistent.

[01:03:27] Uh, Brett Gray from, uh, on my block is another one when I have my longer hair. That one. And then for some reason, the one, my mom stands by to this day, Michael Cera from Superbad. Yeah. Yes. Do you look like black Michael Cera? Which is crazy because no, I don't, but everybody has been saying that to me for about 15, 20 years. And so I just have to own it now. Um, so yeah, so there, yeah. So somewhere between Gerard Carmichael, Brett Gray and, uh, Michael Cera, you're going to find Chappelle.

[01:03:58] Yeah. Very, very, very, very funny. Um, last but not least, before we wrap this up, there's a new trailer out highest to lowest. Have you seen this teaser trailer? No. Mm-mm. Okay. So highest to lowest as Spike Lee back again with two-time Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington. It's a reinterpretation of the 1963 thriller High and Low, and it's going to be set to

[01:04:26] make its world premiere at the Cannes Field Festival in May on the 19th. Now, the, um, very important thing about May 19th is that that is Malcolm X's birthday. Uh, and it will be his 100th birthday. And so that's also the same day that Do the Right Thing dropped at, uh, the Cannes Film Festival as well. So all those things are aligning and we have another Spike Lee and Denzel Washington joint. And so this will be Denzel Washington's first red carpet at the Cannes Field Festival as well.

[01:04:56] So very excited to see what this looks like, but I do have the trailer if you want to watch it. All right. Let's go. All right. And this is just a short teaser trailer. It's not as long as the other ones we've watched, but it's, this is one of those A24 films. So let's go ahead and cue that up and play it now. It's been doing the things for us. The thing that's making money is integrity. That's what you stand for. It's what you actually believe. Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe you'll be successful?

[01:05:28] And the hard times will come from the good times. The hard times will come from success. The hard times will come from the money and the mayhem follows. So can you handle the mayhem? Can you handle the money? Can you handle the success? Can you handle the failure? Can you handle the lovers? Can you handle the memes? Can you handle everything that there is in between? That's the question I have for you. Got to get me ready! Can you handle it? Got to get paid back.

[01:05:57] Big pay back. Oh, money ain't good money. Interesting. Yeah. They die. Yeah. Yeah. I love that. My question for you, Mari, is what is your favorite Spike Lee and Denzel Washington collaboration? I think we have our five. You got both of the Blues, Malcolm X. He got Game, The Inside Man. And now, I guess we can only rank the four because we haven't seen high to low yet. High to low yet.

[01:06:27] Yeah. So out of those four, what's your favorite? This might be blasphemy, but Inside Man was so good to me. Like, in my little crime heart. Like, that, that, that, like, twist at the end was really good. So, yeah. And, Malcolm X is, all the rest of them, I think it could also be recency bias. Because all the rest of them, I haven't seen in, like, years. Yeah.

[01:06:55] And I was pretty young when I saw them, too. So. This is tough for me, too, because I know, I know the Recap Kickback listeners love Malcolm X. When we did our Black Biopics, it was right at the top of the rankings of greatest Black Biopics of all time. But even then, me and you were like, I don't think we voted for that. And so, this time I will say, number one on the list for me. He got game? He got game. Number two. Number two.

[01:07:25] Mo' Better Blues. Number three. Malcolm X. And number four of the Inside Man. But they're all. I know it's controversial. Look. They gonna get me from Mo' Better Blues. Okay. Like, they gonna get me. It spoke to me. As a young trumpet player, I just felt like, okay, one day this is going to be my life. Now, definitely not my life. But, you know, maybe there's a path where this ends up being something that you really should care about. So, really love that.

[01:07:50] And I'm very excited to see what happens after this screening on May 19th and what this comes to, you know, theaters near us. But Mari, that's it. That's our Black Entertainment News, our What's Coming Up Next, and Black Dandyism and the Met Gala 2025. This was fun. It was really fun. We're back. The Kickback is back. We're chilling. We're talking about what we want to do. I'm so glad to be here with you every week, Chappelle. And I hope our listeners enjoy all of the content we bring, too. Yeah.

[01:08:20] And I'm gonna try to upload this ASAP so that I can go ahead and start the fight with YouTube now. So that, like, I know, okay, if y'all gonna be funny acting, you know, later on. So, yeah, let me get on here and try to see if we can slide this through the, you know, the red tape, I guess I will say, on YouTube. If not, again, check us out, recapkickback.com slash subscribe to hear the audio for our immediate reactions and to hear the trailers that we just played if the trailers are not available on our YouTube page.

[01:08:49] Mari, what else do you have going on in your neck of the woods? Of course, like I said, over on Crime Scene Pod, me and Sarah Carradine. It was just us. And we talked about the, oh my God, what is it called? The Heist? Something. I don't know. But it was on Netflix. You can go to CrimeScenePod.com to subscribe.

[01:09:13] You can also subscribe to Crime Scene Pod wherever you listen to your podcast. But on Blue Sky, the other place, you can find us there. And that's Crime, S-E-E-N-Pod.com. What was the name of that? What did we just review? It's right there. The Diamond Heist. That's what it is. Okay. Yes. Guy Ritchie's The Diamond Heist.

[01:09:40] Guy Ritchie produced Diamond Heist, a three-part docuseries on Netflix. I'm trying to think, I was trying to think if I should spoil it or not. The biggest spoiler is we recommended it. So go watch it and then come listen to us talk about it. I think it works much better if you watch it first. Yeah. I listened to Crime Scene this weekend, Mari. I was listening to me talk about Woodstock. Yes. Yes. I love that episode. Yeah. Make sure you go check out Crime Scene.

[01:10:10] There's a lot of appearances from me, obviously, but also appearances from our other recap kickback colleague, Matt Scott. You and Matt Scott just did some wrestling content. Yes, we did. The wrestling kickback came back this weekend, live this Saturday. So what we're going to do going forward is we're just going to do the wrestling kickback live. And we had so much fun talking a little bit about the fallout from WrestleMania, but more importantly, getting ready for Backlash this week.

[01:10:38] Backlash is happening this Saturday, May 10th. And they've done some pretty good job story building in the like three weeks since WrestleMania. WrestleMania was like just just happened. And so going into the next PLE, they've done a great job. Me go check out me and Matt talking about it. We had such a good time.

[01:11:00] And hopefully we'll be back like we're planning to be back at least once, at least once a month, maybe more, depending. Thank you to everybody in the Job House of Squadcast Facebook group for sticking with us. Make sure you are in that group in order to know like you guys are always the first to know when we're going to go live. So if you need help getting into that, reach out to me and Matt on Facebook and we'll get to it. Yeah.

[01:11:30] Or just email us recapkickback.com, you know, gmail.com, you know, whatever. Recapkickback at gmail.com. Get your direct access to me, Matt and Mari and we'll figure out a way to get you in our Facebook group. But yeah, I love that we have the recurring wrestling content. I always love looking at my phone and being like, oh, we going live? Okay. You know, can't wait to see what you guys have coming up next. And then as far as I'm concerned, I made my survivor rounds this last week. I was on the YX Lost podcast.

[01:11:58] I'm complaining about our most recent eliminated contestant from Survivor 48. Then I went on the I don't know about that podcast to complain with Gia about our most recently contested, eliminated contestant from Survivor 48. And then of course, on my podcast, Club Condo, I did a little bit more complaining about the most recently eliminated contestant from Survivor 48 because I just don't understand what happened.

[01:12:24] But also we had the wand off this week and we had some amazing submissions of original song parodies for Survivor 48. Shout out to Forgot About Say. I have heard that song at least 25 times in the last day and I will be listening to it even more. If you have not checked that out, go check out Club Condo on the RHAP YouTube page and then go to the Patreon page to see and hear the music videos or hear the music submissions.

[01:12:50] And then of course, check out our social media RHAP to see the music video and to see me talking about random reality shows as well. I'm popping up here and there to just give you a little insight. Destination X is coming soon. I don't know if I'm going to be covering it, but I'm definitely looking forward to watching it. So make sure you're tuning into RHAP for all of our reality TV shenanigans over there. And then, of course, the Nothing But Netflix podcast where this week we were having the duo on to talk about Untold, the story of those shooting guards. You get it? Shooting guards. Ha ha.

[01:13:20] And will you be covering Devil's Plan? We will not be covering Devil's Plan unless you want to cover Devil's Plan. We'll talk. So anyway, that said, make sure you check us out at all those places. Follow us all on social media at Maritalkstomuch at Recap Kickback. And, you know, tune in every week to see what we have going for you here. Thank you all for listening. Thank you to the people over at Blex Media, BET Plus, and Variety for their articles and

[01:13:47] for their images because we did steal all of that. And then shout out to Leaf Village for the Recap Kickback theme music. Make sure you go follow them on social media at Leaf Village. That's Village with an X. Village with an X. So go check all of that out and then make sure you keep up with all the stuff we have going on here. I'm Mario for myself. You ain't got to go home, but you got to get the hell out of here. Peace out. Talk to you all next time. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye.
