[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_00]: to Recap Kickback. It's me, your host, Chappelle. And today we are going to recap the newest,
[00:00:23] [SPEAKER_00]: uh, I guess, show from an Olympian, a gold medal Olympian, uh, that is available on Peacock
[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_00]: today. And that is Mr. Throwback, the sitcom of sorts, the mockumentary. What, what exactly
[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_00]: is this? What are we talking about today? We're talking about Mr. Throwback, the Steph Curry
[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_00]: show that is on Peacock, six episodes, uh, about the tale of a child who is, um, a young
[00:00:56] [SPEAKER_00]: basketball phenom who will later on go on to form a relationship, I guess, a friendship
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_00]: with Steph Curry and all the shenanigans that ensue amongst the two of them, I guess. That's
[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_00]: the best way I can put this. It's short, but we're going to talk about it all here on Recap
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Kickback today. And with me, of course, to talk about what we just watched, Mr. Throwback,
[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_01]: it's Tyrone. Tyrone, what's up? What is up? I was going to ask you, what do you call this?
[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I even, I try looking it up. I don't know. Mockumentary, I guess, is the thing that
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I kind of came into with this one. Um, but yeah, uh, I'm, I'm, I'm good. I'm ready to
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_01]: talk. I'm ready to talk about it because it was a, it was a very interesting show, uh,
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_01]: for sure. And the style and the way that they presented themselves, um, a little bit unique,
[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_01]: a little bit different than what you're probably used to on a regular show. So, uh, yeah, let's
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_00]: talk about it. Yes. Six part mockumentary series, uh, with Steph Curry as the lead. Uh, but this very
[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_00]: much has nothing to do with Steph Curry in real life. Like when they say mockumentary, they really
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_00]: mean it. And so we're definitely going to talk about all that and more here. Thanks to everybody
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: for listening to Recap Kickback and subscribing. Last week, we had Asia on as our special guest to talk
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_00]: about Divorce in the Black. Uh, and is that like clickbait? Is Tyler Perry playing with us? Is
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: he trolling us? I mean, they took a body out of the casket at the funeral. So, you know, we had a lot
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_00]: of opinions about Divorce in the Black. Check that out here on Recap Kickback. Uh, have you, have you
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_01]: seen it? Yes. I would say it in the first five minutes of the movie is there's somebody being pulled
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: out of a casket. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We talked about it here, but Ty, what was your opinion about the
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: movie in general? Did you like it? Uh, no, I absolutely abhorred it. Like it was a terrible
[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_01]: movie. Like we, we watched it, me and the missus watched it. Right. And then, um, uh, my daughter,
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_01]: she was like, yeah, yo, I want to watch that new movie. That's new Tyler Perry movie. And I said,
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not watching that again. I'm not watching it again, but it is, I will say this though.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It is one of those movies where it's kind of like you had to, you had to at least give it a chance.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: You had to see it to see all the shenanigans that was involved. It was plenty of shit. You had to be
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_01]: there. It was plenty of shenanigans. So it's kind of like, like if you, you, you watched the episode,
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_01]: the Recap Kickback episode last week, and you hear me talking about it and, and multiple people might
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_01]: have said, this is a terrible movie. This is trash. Like sometimes you got to watch the trash movies to be
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_01]: like, yo, this is hilarious. So why, how, how is Tyler Perry getting away with this? That's, that's
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_00]: the question that I keep coming up with. Listen, we definitely asked that question and more on the
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_00]: podcast. So check that out. It was a fun time having Asia on for the first time. Mari and I
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_00]: thoroughly enjoyed it. And we're going to, we're going to talk about more Tyler Perry in the future.
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm assuming, cause it don't seem like he's going to change his game at all. But speaking of game
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: changers, we're here to talk about Steph Curry and whatever this Mr. Throwback show is. So we know that
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Steph Curry is a recent gold medal Olympian. Uh, this will be, uh, Steph's, uh, journey into
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: television. As far as I know, I I've never seen Steph Curry anything else, but Mr. Throwback
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_00]: to me was surprisingly really kind of, it was kind of good time. I'm not going to lie to you. I enjoyed
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_01]: this a lot. What about you? Uh, I, I laughed a good bit. Um, I would say, uh, you know, the,
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: the, the, the actual lead on the show, I can't remember his Adam. Okay. Thank you. I've seen
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_01]: him on a couple of shows, um, before I think he was on a show with Damon Wayans Jr. Uh, one time
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_01]: before. Happy Endness. Happy Endness. Thank you. I showed that I watched and then, uh, he was on like
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_01]: the recent Sonic series on Knuckles, uh, series as well. That was on Paramount or whatever. So
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: his style of humor is pretty much the same. Um, I think, uh, this, I didn't really like how he acted
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: on Knuckles. I thought he was a little bit too over the top, but I thought this really matched the
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: vibe that you got from him on Happy Endings. And it made me appreciate it more because this is what
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I like from him. So, um, no, I thought it was funny. I thought, uh, his delivery, uh, was on point for the
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_01]: most part. Um, and so, uh, I think he did a good job leading the charge of this, uh, shockingly
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_01]: surprisingly, surprisingly, not shockingly, surprisingly funny, um, show series, my community.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. We're going to figure out what to call this. It's a, it's a comedy series for sure.
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, and it, uh, I believe it's ranking in top five of Peacock's original comedy series as of right
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: now. So it's doing really well. Um, not surprisingly, of course, according to deadline, uh, 77% of the
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: accounts who watch Mr. Throwback also watched basketball at the Olympics. And so there's a lot
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: of overlap there. We talked about the Olympics here on recap kickback. Latonya came on to talk
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_00]: about, uh, Simone Biles and the gymnastics. And then of course I had DJ mighty mouse come on to talk
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: about the track and field sprint events prior to the Olympic games. But since the Olympic games,
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that Steph Curry has been able to highlight this using the Olympics, but also using Peacock.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Peacock was such a big part of the Olympics that it's no surprise to me, Tyrone, that this show is
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_00]: going to lean into that and then take it and flip it into a TV series. I just wasn't
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_01]: expecting this TV series. Yeah. And to be honest, I'm wondering how quickly they actually made this
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: because there was the reference to the Olympics. Uh, we'll get to in the last episode. Um, and then
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_01]: they also made some like current Twitter references. Did you get the Hawk tour reference that they,
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: uh, had? Yeah. So it's like that, that just happened. That literally just happened like maybe a month or
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_01]: like this to, to, to set up to it is, I think it's interesting. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if this
[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_00]: is one of those timeless things that you will be talking about for years and years to come. I don't
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_00]: think anybody's demanding a season two of Mr. Throwback, but it was a fun watch. And, uh, I have
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_00]: a lot of, a lot of parts of this that I want to talk about. So for it to be 30 minutes, uh, per
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_00]: episode, I thought that each episode was hilarious. I thought that the cast was really good. Uh, you know,
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_00]: no, no disrespect to Steph Curry, but he's probably the weakest one in the cast. You know, he does,
[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_00]: he's not an actor. He's not a comedian, but I think he held his own amongst these. Yeah. These
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_00]: funny moments. Uh, how, what did you think about the way the show portrayed Stephen Curry in, in this,
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_00]: uh, series? Because I think we know Steph Curry is kind of like, you know, this phenomenal basketball
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_00]: player, but this was a lot of, it was very personal, even though it was fake, you know?
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. I think, um, it matches the vibe of what you get from Steph Curry, which is like,
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, life is great. And so because life is so great, I'm going to lean into some of the things
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: that people talk about me, like some of the things that you mentioned being soft or something like
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_01]: that, or he doesn't come off as in a lot of ways, like, um, maybe having this, like a bravado all
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_01]: about himself, but in this, in this, so you saw some, some of that type of stuff or whatever, or,
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_01]: uh, uh, things like that. So it's kind of like, I think it just really matches everything that you
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: assume about Steph Curry. And that, like I said before, life is, is great. Like there is,
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_01]: you feel like this guy doesn't have a bad day in his life, right? Other than when he maybe loses,
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: you know what I mean? Cause he, he's competitive, but you feel like he doesn't have a bad day in
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: his life. And he, he fully leans into all of that and all of the things that people maybe even say
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: negatively about him, which is, which is great. It's great to see. Are you a Steph Curry fan?
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, light skin, light skin, unite, like you didn't have to say light skin twice. We got it.
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Light skin, unite, light, light, light, light, light skin, unite. I'm all in on Stephen,
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Stephen Curry. I'm all in on Stephen Curry. That's like, he changed the game, right? I wouldn't call
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: him the best, but he definitely changed the landscape of how you play in the NBA. Everybody is going to
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: be following this footstep. So you're going to see like people five, 10 years from now,
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: that's trying to outmatch the way that he shoots the ball, um, the three ball. So yes, I'm a,
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a huge Stephen Curry fan. And I just like that. It feels like he's just floating on air everywhere.
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_01]: He damn goes. Like it feels like nothing. I love that. Like, I appreciate that.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that's what they, you're right. They leaned into the idea that Steph is just
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_00]: this guy who can pretty much do no wrong. I think that, um, a large percentage of his population
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: that hates him hates him because he, he does make it look so easy. You know what I'm saying?
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_00]: The, the three point, the three pointer is the three pointer because it's difficult. That's why
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: it's worth an extra point, you know, but this man has made it his entire personality. He has to be
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_00]: able to shoot the three pointer. And so that's gotta be frustrating for people. You're like,
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_00]: you're changing the way basketball is played. He's not controversial. There's very few things that
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Steph Curry himself has ever done where people are like, I don't like that for Steph. Don't get
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_00]: wrong. Everybody has done something, but for the most part, they hate him because he just doesn't
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_00]: seem like he seems so hateable because he is winning. And because he does seem to have a happy life
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_00]: and a beautiful family and stuff like that. It's like, you, you don't hate him. You resent him,
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, uh, for being so good and so unbothered by things. And this show just completely leads into
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_00]: that. And also folks funded the idea that maybe some of this stuff isn't Steph Curry originally,
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, you know, so I liked that the show will present us with, yeah, the Steph Curry that we all
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_00]: know and love. Maybe there's other sides of him that we should be exploring, but it's hard to get
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_00]: the story here of Danny and Danny, as you talked about, is played by Adam Paley from Happy Endings.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_00]: This guy, uh, Danny, he was the original basketball phenom. They called him Jewish Jesus. Yeah. But better
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_00]: than Steph, uh, because in about eighth grade, he was, I'd say about a foot taller than all of the
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_00]: competitors on the basketball court. So in the year of our Lord, 1999, he's just unstoppable.
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_00]: They say he was getting recruited already. Uh, and the scouts were looking at him. Yeah. And
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_00]: it's because he was just so much better than all the kids around him. Even Steph Curry was looking up
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_00]: to him. He wanted to be him. He wanted to be like him. He, he stole a lot of the things. Uh, what is it?
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_00]: The celebration and the night night celebration from, you know, all that stuff came here from Danny,
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_00]: but Danny has a dark past. We will find out in this docu documentary or mockumentary that, uh,
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_00]: that they're making here that Danny, uh, his, his, his rise to fame quickly plummeted when he found
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_00]: out that his dad had been telling everybody that he was, um, what? 14 years old. It turns out he was 16.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_00]: What was the, what was the age range? I believe it was 16. Uh, I believe it was age difference.
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. Yeah. Or he was 12 or they were, uh, I think it was that, Oh, that's what it was.
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_00]: He was, uh, 14 and everybody else was 12, I believe. And so, uh, he was a high school student
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_00]: playing with, uh, middle schoolers essentially. And so, uh, this is not the same. This is not the
[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_00]: same. We will see that he is not the tallest guy or the most fit guy either. So maybe he would have
[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_00]: peaked around that time around that, you know, when the most high school students start to come into
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_00]: their basketball build, this guy got left behind and the whole world saw him as a fraud.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_00]: And so his career plummets, he never gets to the highest heights that Steph Curry gets
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_00]: to. And honestly, it puts a rift in their friendship. They had known each other their
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_00]: whole lives to that point. And since then they have not been in touch, but now he needs
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_00]: money. And because he needs money, he needs to go make friends with Steph Curry because
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Steph is made of money. Tyrone, his plan was to go and get money from his friend and it snowballed
[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_00]: until to a lie about his kid, uh, having a terminal illness and needing money for the illness.
[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_00]: This is like a slow moving train wreck for six episodes. Yeah. And to be honest, I liked the
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_01]: setup because it actually surprised me. It wasn't that he was going to ask Steph Curry for money.
[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_01]: He was going to steal his Jersey and the Jersey. And that was going to be the way that he paid off the
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_01]: mob. The issue is he got caught stealing the Jersey. And so he brings up a picture of his
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: daughter in a Halloween costume, looking like she's sick, which is funny because she doesn't
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: look like that when they finally see her. She's got a handful of hair or whatever. And saying that
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: she has some sort of unknown terminal illness and it just kept exploding, exploding, exploding from
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: there. And that was essentially the cliffhanger of every episode was like, how much further at the
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_01]: end of episode one, two, three, four, can this get? Um, and that's essentially the style of,
[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_01]: of the mockumentary, which, which made, it made me want to see the next episode every single time.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, and that's why I thought it was really good and really kind of written pretty, pretty well.
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, because of that. And we also meet, uh, Steph Curry's assistant, Kimberly, who also was a part of
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: the tribe when they was young, right? It was, they were called the splash siblings, you know?
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Eggo and Wodham. Wodham. Yeah. Eggo Wodham, uh, was, uh,
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_00]: the assistant Kimberly, I wasn't very familiar with her work, but I'm a big fan. Uh, after watching
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_00]: this, she's very funny. So between her, Adam Pally and, um, Steph Curry, you have this, you know,
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_00]: you have this team and they've now reunited, you know, her being Steph's assistant and basically the
[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_00]: head or CEO, basically of whatever Steph is doing. Um, she's very protective of Steph. And she also
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_00]: knows that Danny, like his dad, who, you know, started the original scam might be full of shit.
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, it's her job to make sure she keeps all the people who are scamming, trying to get money
[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_00]: out of Steph away from him. And so throughout the entire mockumentary, they're trying to navigate,
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: okay, is Danny scamming them? And how do I stop him? And how do I keep this from Steph? Because
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_00]: eventually Steph will end up in a slump and that's not great. Steph is so used to winning that he does
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: not do well when he's not doing well and it's making him do worse. And so she's trying to protect
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Steph. But throughout, this is so funny. Adam Pally's character, uh, Danny is hilarious. I think
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_00]: everything about him is a scammer. We're led to kind of down this road of, you know, he is a scammer.
[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_00]: But by the end of this, we learned that maybe he's a scammer because his dad's a scammer. We meet his
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_00]: dad and his dad is one of the worst, one of the worst people probably that I've ever seen until I saw
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Danny. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, I think it was episode five that where you, cause you heard all of the things
[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_01]: that the, that his dad did, but you got to see it in episode five, which is, uh, which was a great,
[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_01]: uh, great view of that to kind of get an idea of why he is the way he is. And also I think with
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Kimberly and Danny's characters, uh, both of them were funny in their own right, but it was a different
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_01]: form of funny. Like Kimberly had these quick like phrases that she would drop in. I think one time she
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_01]: was like Rick Pitino gave his family a Range Rover when they was talking about, you know, kind of, uh,
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_01]: referencing his dad or, uh, Danny's dad or something like that. And then, but Danny is kind of like this,
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_01]: like, I'm gonna do stupid shit. Um, and the stupid shit is going to be funny and I'm gonna have
[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_01]: stupid perspective of why I think the way that I do, um, involved in the whole thing. And so you
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: just fall into this whole trap of what is Danny's going to do? What is Danny going to do next? You got
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_01]: his ex-wife that gets involved. And, and the only reason this has become a mockumentary is because
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_01]: they follow stuff around everywhere he goes. And so all the time, right. Cause he does stuff all the
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_01]: time. So now you have to sign this release. We have to record you. And then at the end of this,
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_01]: you have to sign this release, uh, to make sure that we can put this information out. So all of
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_01]: this is like the story of Danny Grossman. And it is like, it's a question that I have for you actually,
[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_01]: like Chappelle, it's like the essence I got from episode one is like, do you appreciate a
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_01]: redemption story more or train wreck more? Oh, that's tough. That's tough because throughout this,
[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I was rooting on Danny's downfall. I will, I wanted him to get caught so bad because I quickly
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_00]: identified that he's the problem. You know, like the show is trying to show us that he is a product
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_00]: of his dad. Hurt people, hurt me. Yeah. Hurt people, hurt people. Right. And it's all he knows.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_00]: He was raised like this. You'll see that even his daughter has some scammer in her at some points
[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_00]: and his daughter, she, she was one of the standout characters for me. Cause she was wild. But, uh,
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_00]: but Danny here, yeah, throughout, I'm like a redemption story would be cool.
[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_00]: But honestly, I just want to see this crash and burn because from jump, he was never,
[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_00]: his heart was never in the right place. You know, don't get me wrong. He was a product of
[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_00]: being raised by a scammer. Uh, and then having this horrible downfall at such an early age,
[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_00]: which is clearly traumatic, but at the same time, now you're going to scam Steph Curry. And I don't
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_00]: like that. You know, I don't, I don't like it. I don't like the way that is not sitting with me.
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And you're trying to scam Kimberly. And I'm like, Oh no, this woman is doing nothing,
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_00]: but doing her job and mind her business. And now you didn't show it up, uh, on demon time.
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And now you try to ruin these people's lives. You know, they are now making it. Yeah. They're
[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_00]: now lying about terminal illness and someone you have to draw the line and just say, okay,
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_00]: you're going to get what you deserve. Eventually. Now does he get what he deserves? I think that's
[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_00]: debatable. Tyrone, did you appreciate the redemption story that we ultimately got?
[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted a redemption story. I wanted it. Once we got the redemption story and then make no mistake
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_01]: about it for folks who haven't watched it. Like there was a train wreck involved in it as well. We
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_01]: got both. Okay. Yeah. We both. We got both. We got both. I don't think the wreck was big enough.
[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I thought the wreck should have been more. I thought there should have been more of a train wreck.
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, it, it turned around too quickly. It was, and maybe that goes back to the question I had before.
[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, how quickly did they make this? You know what I mean? Because could they have put on a
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_01]: seventh episode to extend out the train wreck? I think so. I think so. So I would say no,
[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't appreciate the redemption story. It came too quickly.
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. Yeah. Cause Danny sucks. I want to be very clear that throughout this series,
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_00]: he had several times that he could come clean several times where he could get out of this
[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_00]: because one thing that they really made a point of doing is showing Steph Curry as somebody who
[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_00]: would be agreeable, who would be willing to listen. He was very welcoming to Danny who would
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_00]: just pop up in his life and try to steal his Jersey. Okay. So there's tons of times where Danny is
[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_00]: saying, I just don't know when the right time is to tell Steph about the scam. Like I need to let
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_00]: him know because he's being so nice to me. And Steph would come up to him and say,
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_00]: any for your thoughts, you know, is there anything you want to talk about that?
[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Bring, let me in. Let me be your friend. Vent to me, tell me things. And Danny just could not bring
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_00]: us up to do it because of all the glitz and the glamor and the money. It just, it was like the
[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_00]: snowball was going down the hill and it was quickly trying to hit into the avalanche.
[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_01]: At the same time, like they make you feel bad for him. Like I really did.
[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I really did feel bad for him. Oh my gosh, bro. I felt bad for him. I really did. I was like,
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_01]: clearly the traumatic, the trauma of what happened as a child kind of leaked into everything. It
[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_01]: leaked into his marriage. It leaked into him being a father, like Charlie, his daughter. Uh,
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I agree with you. She was great. Clearly loves him. Right. But it is also,
[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_01]: he doesn't really hold her accountable for it. Right. It's more of a friendship than it is a
[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_01]: father and daughter relationship. And a lot of that seeks into it and comes from what he went through
[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_01]: with his dad. So it's kind of like, like you feel bad. And so every time he comes up with us, uh, like,
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I'm a flip it into this type of positive. Like, Hey, even though she doesn't have a terminal
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_01]: illness, I'm going to say she's cured. And then we're going to take this money for a charity
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_01]: basketball game, which is what Steph Curry ended up doing for him. And we don't put that into another
[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_01]: terminal illness. Like you, you want that to happen. You want that to come true. And yeah,
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_00]: it just never, it just never, it just never, I didn't want that to come true. I didn't want
[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_00]: that to come true at all. I was rooting against this man. Now, the only times that
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I was ever rooting for him is when the scamming got really good. So that's, that's, it's a thin
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_00]: line to walk with me. It's like on the one hand, when you're being sloppy and you're just coming
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_00]: out with random lies on the spot, I'm like, all right, you're going to get your come up and soon
[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_00]: it's going to be great. But when he started to step it up, when you really start to see
[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_00]: the Danny's father reflected in Danny, that's when I was there. Oh, okay, cool. Because
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_00]: throughout we'll hear little moments and little seeds of Danny has been like this forever.
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, he talks about how, I guess in episode two, they're talking about how Danny framed
[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Kimberly when they were kids for killing the class pet, right? We will find out at the end of this
[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_00]: all that he did it for Steph anyway, but he still framed her. And so you're like, okay, he kind of
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_00]: had the scammer vibe in him at different points, but it started to get really good for me when him
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_00]: and Kimberly are playing kind of like this cold war of who's going to flinch first, who's going to
[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_00]: fold first. Danny is trying to get this celebrity basketball game off the ground.
[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Kimberly does not trust Danny. And so she's pretending to be helping with the celebrity
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_00]: basketball game, but there's no movement on it at all. So Danny's waiting on her to admit that
[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_00]: she's not actually helping. And she's waiting on him to admit that there's no celebrity basketball
[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_00]: game. Like it's, this is all a scam. And he beats her. He has Kimberly up there. Oh man,
[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry. Drake, Drake actually hates Steph Curry and they hate each other. My bad. I didn't know
[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_00]: your daughter was dying. I feel so bad. And he's sitting there looking at the camera, like checkmate
[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_00]: and see those moments. I was like, all right, I'm kind of team Danny, but for the most part,
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I needed him to go down. So that was the cringing moment because I'm sitting here watching it.
[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Right. All right. So let's, let's build this up real quickly. Right. Because remember at the end of
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_01]: every episode, there's like a cliffhanger. Right. So at the end of episode one, it was like,
[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_01]: okay, the ex-wife knows now. Right. And then at the end of episode two, it was like,
[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_01]: okay, the daughter knows now. Right. And then, and, and, and Charlie scammer junior, junior,
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_01]: it was like, all right, bet let's do this. Right. She, she started skipping school. Like she made it
[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_01]: the thing. Like she really turned it up and tuned into it. You know what I mean? Right. So that was
[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of like the, the, the whole buildup to it. And so when the Drake situation happened on the plane,
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_01]: right, you're Charlie saying no, and I'm shaking my head with her. I'm like, no, like just no,
[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_01]: let it go. Let it go. And he just kept egging it on. And, and to your point, it worked. Like it worked.
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_01]: It worked. And like the comeuppance happens clearly. Right. We know this from the beginning
[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_01]: as we're watching this, we know something's going to go down to where somebody finds out and then
[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_01]: we're good. Right. And then they end it all. But I thought that was the comeuppance. I thought that
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_01]: was the moment I was like, Oh, he bought the mess up. He's doing too much. And I think that's what I
[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_01]: appreciated about this show is like, every time you thought it was doing too much, there was another
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_01]: level that something else that was going to happen on the horizon. That's why you should watch it
[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_01]: is because you can't, you don't expect the next thing to happen, the next thing to come up. And
[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_00]: that's what was good about it. So yeah. Yeah. Well, you talk about Charlie finding out, obviously
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_00]: she's not in on the plan where Danny's telling everybody that she's sick and she's dying,
[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_00]: but once she's in on it, she is on board. She's kind of like, all right, uh, this is kind of cool.
[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Like her and her dad have a lot in common. She loves her dad clearly. So she's like, okay, I'm all
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_00]: in. If some of the money can go to charity as well as make sure that my dad isn't murdered,
[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_00]: uh, for, you know, not paying his debts. That's great for me. So we see Charlie, the influencer
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_00]: at Charlie, the sickest on Instagram, racking up, uh, views and followers and subscribers.
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The cyber truck killed me. You know what I'm saying? So it was, it
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_00]: was fun to watch. It really was. But by the end of that episode, even Charlie's trying to
[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_00]: come clean. She's at school saying, all right, y'all, I have an announcement. I'm not sick.
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And the kids are like, yes, mama sick doesn't define you slay Queens. You're like, no, seriously,
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sick. I'm not sick. They're like, yeah, me, me neither girl. You're so brave.
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_00]: She can't even come down because the uncertainty is getting so high that each of the people that
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Danny gets in on the, on the scam, they all start tapping out first. Charlie, then eventually her,
[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_00]: her, her mom slash Charlie's, I'm sorry. Danny's ex-wife, Sam, she starts tapping out as well
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_00]: because she's dating a geneticist or something like she's dating a doctor who is, who is so
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_00]: concerned with Charlie and her health. And she's like, he's like, why don't you just let me help
[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_00]: you? This is Steph Curry's doctor. This man is using state of the art, but also set of
[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_00]: by community. Yeah, exactly. This is Steph Curry's doctor. So we know he is, he is state of the art.
[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_00]: He's as good as he gets. And he's sitting here trying to figure out, well, why won't you just
[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_00]: let me work on the kid? Why won't you let me try something on the kid? If she's dying, why can't
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I help? But they have to keep this charade going. And so Sam and the doctor, Dr. Josh, they start
[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_00]: messing around. And so now even Sam wants out, you know, everybody wants out of this, except for Danny
[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_00]: who cannot, he literally cannot go any further on his own. Like he just keeps going higher and higher
[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_00]: through this scam to where he's running out a runway and it gets even worse when his dad is
[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_00]: actually brought in because him and his dad haven't talked in a while, but since Steph is going through
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_00]: a slump, they need one favor from Danny. And that is to get his dad on board with this. What did you
[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_00]: think about Danny's dad once we saw him as he was depicted in the real time?
[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So the whole, uh, Oh, I can't remember the name of like the, the, the, the group that he was in
[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_01]: where they would go to like high schools or whatever. And they would act like they're on drugs
[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_01]: or they're into sex or they're into alcohol or whatever. And they would basically play up the,
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_01]: the issues or the wrongdoings of getting into those addictions. And it was a group of three.
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It was Danny's dad and then a husband and a wife. And then the husband of the wife has never done any
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_01]: type of drugs or alcohol or anything, but Danny and the wife, I'm sorry, Danny's dad and the wife,
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_01]: they were addicts, right. And they were sober and went through that whole process or whatever. So
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_01]: that's like the first, uh, almost like entry into, uh, Danny's dad and what he is and what he's become.
[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_01]: But what they always kept kind of clinging on to is that Danny's dad is a great coach, right? And so
[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_01]: he, he's a terrible dad, but he's a great coach. And so that's why he was in, ended up being involved
[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_01]: in it is because like you said, Steph is in a slump. And so we need Danny's dad to tell him how to get
[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_01]: out of the slump. Um, so I thought the way they inserted him into the process, I thought was pretty,
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_01]: pretty decent. Um, I thought it was in line of how you can get him involved and, uh, for him to,
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_01]: uh, kind of, uh, be needed, I would say be needed in that is where he kind of came into play.
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think things start to go awry whenever now Steph is having these news conferences and in the
[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_01]: news conferences, he's mentioning Charlie. Yeah. So Danny's dad is why the TV is like,
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_01]: my granddaughter is sick. Oh, no, I'm sober now. Like I'm trying to be involved. Like we gotta,
[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_01]: we gotta, we gotta get in the mix here. Um, and so that's where really the thing started to break
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_01]: down. Cause like you mentioned, people are trying to step out of the process. Right. I think it was
[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_01]: funny. Charlie was like, school is, I mean, things are lonely now. Cause I'm out of school. Right.
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_01]: All the teachers are just letting me pass the little boy that she wanted to go to the dance with was
[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_01]: like, I don't want to be your first and your last kiss. It sucks. It sucks. It sucks. It's like,
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_01]: clearly, you know what I mean? And so, but that wasn't really the breakdown of it all. The breakdown
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_01]: was Danny's dad insertion into the process. That's when everything really kind of, uh, went to hell.
[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, I don't know why Sam told the truth. Why did she tell the truth to him? She don't know
[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_00]: that man. Oh, to the doctor, to the dad. Oh, to, to, oh, oh, to Mitch. Yeah. So, I mean, Mitch does
[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_00]: show up. Um, now Mitch, Mitch and Danny, they have a very interesting relationship because they have,
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_00]: they're estranged. You know, once he ruined his life, he was like, all right, I don't want to
[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_00]: ever talk to you again, blah, blah, blah. But when he goes and confronts him, Mitch says, well, I've been
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_00]: trying to reach out all these years. And Danny's like, oh yeah, sure you have. He's like, no,
[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_00]: you didn't open my letters that I've been sending you. He's like, yeah, I mean, open, I didn't open
[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_00]: the letters. I didn't want to talk to you. He said, but I've been sending you money in all the letters,
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_00]: a hundred dollars in every letter, uh, 15 years, I don't know, and $500 on holidays. And then I won
[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_00]: $43,000 on a scratch off, you know, I've been trying to make amends. Uh, and now he's in gamblers
[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_00]: anonymous. We know that he's, you know, promoting, um, you know, being drug free and sex free and all
[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_00]: this other stuff for the kids, you know, like you were talking about with his improv group. And so
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_00]: there's a lot of reasons why, you know, anybody else would look at Mitch and say,
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_00]: he seems like he's on the up and up in comparison to somebody like Danny, who is currently scamming.
[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_00]: And so when Mitch shows up, he's just like, I just want to be, look at all the positive things I'm
[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_00]: doing with my life. I just want to be here for my grandchild who's dying. It's like, what do you do
[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_00]: at that point? Like this man is concerned about his grandchild and you just go let, you know, let this
[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_01]: man, uh, believe that his grandchild is dying. Yeah. He's a lot strong. He's a strange. I don't,
[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we've ever heard of Sam having a relationship or even knowing about, she just
[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_01]: knows about the situation with the dad, right? Charlie doesn't even know about his, uh, uh,
[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Danny's childhood. You know what I mean? And so it's kind of like, Sam, you have no relationship
[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_01]: with this guy. There is why there's no reason for you. There's no reason for you to tell him about
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_01]: it. That's, there's no reason. Like, yeah, you think the reason is because that's the granddaughter.
[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_00]: That's, that's the only reason. Uh, no, I mean, I just think that, you know, Mitch has also got a lot
[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_00]: of scammer in him too, you know? Um, so he's showing up to see the kid before she dies. And, um,
[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, we see, you know, Kim is doing her whole back and forth with Danny, but I think that Mitch
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_00]: is still working on Sam. You know, she's trying, he's trying to get in with Danny. So it's for him,
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_00]: he's trying to bond with his, his granddaughter and his child that he hasn't seen in a while.
[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think at some point Sam wanted out. I think that's a, this is another way that she's like,
[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I have to tell somebody, you know, because it's starting to snowball for her too. So the problem
[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_00]: though is that Mitch is not, Mitch is not as wholesome as he would like to remain, right? Like
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_00]: he is wholesome in this moment, but he's also a scammer deep down in his soul, in his soul. He's an
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_00]: addict. He's a gambler. And Danny is dragging him into this as well. You know, he's now going to be
[00:33:47] [SPEAKER_00]: a part of it because he has to help Steph and Danny has to play nice to get him to help Steph. And so
[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I think for them, they're folding, you know, the secret is coming out, but it's now in the hands of
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_00]: the biggest and the baddest scammer of them all. And, you know, it starts off like Mitch is probably
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_00]: not the greatest dad, but he kind of sucks as a human, you know, it's really bad. So now that
[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Mitch is in on this as well, it's really going to get out of control. And Danny doesn't even want it.
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_00]: He has no ambition to be cool with his dad because of their past. So I thought it was a very cool story.
[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I thought that seeing Mitch being held accountable for Danny's past while Danny is
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_00]: simultaneously doing the same exact thing to Charlie. I thought that was pretty cool. You know, what,
[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_00]: what is there? Is there any difference between what Danny is doing to Charlie versus what his dad did
[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_00]: to him? I don't really see it. It's worse. It's worse. He said this guy is crying. He just said you was
[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_01]: two years older than you was. You said your daughter is dying. I mean, like it granted.
[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_01]: The lie is worse. The lie is worse for sure. The trauma from the lie can be worse. You know,
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_01]: if you don't break it down and stop it, right? It can be worse. The parts in between though
[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_01]: is better because getting the party at Tao,
[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Steph bought it out over Violet B or whatever his shorty name is.
[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Violet G. Yeah.
[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean? It's like getting the birthday party over that, right? Getting the TikTok and
[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_01]: getting the cyber truck and, you know, having the friends and all of that stuff. Like even Sam,
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_01]: like the, having the chance to hang out with Aisha Curry and all that stuff. Like it's hard to answer
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_01]: it fully to say it's worse. There are things around it. The beginning of it and the end of it is
[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_01]: certainly worse, but that part in the middle, whoa, that's some fun. That's some fun stuff,
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_01]: right? That you, that, that life you live in is, is absolutely amazing. It's absolutely amazing.
[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. It's like the story. I mean, we're watching this happen, but Danny is being,
[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_00]: having to look in a mirror and look at himself and see a picture of his dad. You know, he's looking
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_00]: and saying, I can now see how my dad made this mistake, you know, where you told a lie and then
[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_00]: it just started to spiral. And now you can't get out of it. We saw that Danny Grossman was the youngest
[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_00]: kid to ever be on the Wheaties box. You know, the youngest athlete to ever be on a Wheaties box.
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_00]: We know that he was given a Range Rover, you know, he was, he was the face of basketball at
[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_00]: the tender age of 14 slash 12, you know, whichever one you want to look at. And it was all because of
[00:36:38] [SPEAKER_00]: his dad. I think the reason why Danny's scam is even worse is because he includes Charlie in on
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_00]: the scam. Danny had no clue. And his dad had a lot about his age. You know, he had no clue that he was
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_00]: 14, uh, playing basketball with 12 year olds. He thought he was exceptional when in reality, he was just
[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_00]: old, you know? And so here Charlie's in on the scam. And I think that's what makes, uh, what Mitch does
[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_00]: even worse is because he ruined Danny's life almost without his like participation and consent was
[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_00]: had Charlie, you know, and she's a kid, so I'm not expecting her to come in and say the right,
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, like shut it down dad. But at the same time, by including her, it felt a little less gross.
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it felt kind of like, okay, once she was in on it, had Charlie been like from drunk?
[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, absolutely not dad. I probably been like, all right, you suck, you know, cause she's begging
[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_00]: you not to put her life at risk, but she was into it. She, she saw all the benefits that scammer
[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_00]: gene is in her too. She saw all the benefits that could come from this, the clout, the nightclub
[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_00]: parties and all that kind of stuff. And she wanted in until she wanted out. And eventually they all
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_01]: wanted out except for Danny. And that's what turned Mitch back to his addiction is cause it was like,
[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_01]: all right, I see Danny doing it, but to know that Charlie's in on it as well, that night,
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_01]: what did, what did I do? You know what I mean? Like I'm no good. And it turned him back into
[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_01]: addiction. And I, I love the grocery store scene because you see him go into it and you see him
[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_01]: buy the bottle or put the bottle of vodka on the, uh, on the little thing to the, to the grocery
[00:38:11] [SPEAKER_01]: clerk. And then you see him walk out of the store. So the same question, right? Do you want to see a
[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_01]: redemption store? Do you want to see a train wreck? You thinking, Oh man, good old Mitch. Like he,
[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_01]: he made it out. He didn't buy it. Like he didn't step back into it. No, no, no. You learn later on
[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_01]: that the only reason he couldn't buy that bottle of vodka is because he left his wallet in the car.
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. Like he was in, he was in all, he was all in on backsliding and falling off the wagon.
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_00]: He's okay with it. He put up a valiant effort until he didn't, you know, I will say that, um,
[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_00]: there was a moment where I think Danny says, you know, like play me in one-on-one or X, Y, Z will
[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_00]: happen. You know, he's like, dad, Danny, I can't play you in one-on-one. I literally can't gamble at
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_00]: all. And he's like, I mean, what? So you, it's not worth your, your relationship with your son. He's
[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_00]: like, no, I cannot gamble. It's I, it, I am an addict and I cannot do this. Those first couple
[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_00]: episodes, Mitch was fighting for his life. Episode five. Oh no. He completely off the wagon and his
[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_00]: friends are trying to do an intervention for him. And he drags them off the wagon too. Both of them
[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_00]: were addicted to drugs. And now both of them are back just like high as a kite drinking.
[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_01]: He got the husband who ain't never done a drug or liquor or whatever in his life on it.
[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_00]: And he didn't ask with a dang wife. Yeah. It's all bad. It's all bad. We see both sides. We see
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Danny showing up to talk to Mitch and seeing through Mitch, you know, he could, Danny knows
[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_00]: nah, he's a drunk. We don't see that side in episode five at the beginning. I'm sorry. At the end of
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_00]: episode four, like about episode five, we're getting Danny's perspective, but then they flip it and
[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_00]: they show us all the stuff Mitch has been doing in the background. And he's waking up off a bender
[00:40:03] [SPEAKER_00]: and going and put it on a roll real quick and going out and being like, Oh, Danny, I'm so happy. You
[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_00]: know, just my sobriety journey, this, that, and the other. And Danny's like, nah, nah.
[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Right through that. Yeah. Yeah. I can smell the liquor on your breath player. I know exactly what
[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_00]: this is. So I loved it. I thought there was some very cool and interesting choices made with the way
[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_00]: this was shown. I thought that Steph came out very likable. It's like, if you hate Steph Curry,
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_00]: you hate Steph Curry and then you, anybody can never do to make you change yet. But I think that
[00:40:32] [SPEAKER_00]: if you came in a positive about Steph or as Steph Curry agnostic, this was fun. It was, um, it talked
[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_00]: about Steph, but it more like highlighted, you know, I guess all the good nature of him in a fun way
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_00]: that really didn't lean into like, Oh, this is Steph Curry, like trying to convince everybody he's the
[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_00]: greatest basketball player of all time. This is more like, like you said, a fun way of highlighting
[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_00]: a player that a lot of people know and hate or know and love or know and love to hate. You know,
[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_00]: it just kind of gave a different outlook on a basketball player that is very well known. I mean,
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_00]: you probably find very few sports fans in the world who don't know who Steph Curry is to an extent.
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree. Um, I think, um, like as far as the show is concerned, right. It draws you in.
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I thought the first two episodes was hilarious. Like top, top. I wrote down so much stuff of lines.
[00:41:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yo, that's funny. That's funny. That's funny. And then I think episode three and
[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_01]: beyond, it kind of turned into a little bit more of a serious vibe or whatever. So I think they did
[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_01]: a good job of kind of drawing you in, getting you engaged in the story, making you laugh. And then
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_01]: three on down to six, it was like a little bit more of a serious turn. Um, still some funny moments
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_01]: in there, of course, but, uh, definitely more like somber music, you know, in certain moments
[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and things like that. I, should we spoil how it all broke down? Should we, um, do you think,
[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, we reviewed the, uh, the, we reviewed the series. If you want to go watch it, go check
[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_00]: it out. You know, it's a fun, it's a fun watch from the beginning. You know exactly what you're
[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_00]: getting, but it gets, it is so funny. I think that that is the, the, the most important part
[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_00]: about this. Like the plot is cool. The writing is dope. The acting, they're all great. They're all
[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_00]: great in their own way. But I think ultimately, if you want to go check this out, you're looking
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_00]: for something fun to watch, something to laugh at, something lighthearted that you could just sit
[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_00]: through real quick. Nothing too stressful. It's a little blue. So it gets a little, it's a little
[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_00]: dope. I'll give it that. But for the most part, this is great. So yeah, let's go ahead and talk
[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_01]: about how it all pans out, Ty. Yeah. So, um, remember there's a camera crew that is
[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_01]: watching, uh, everything that Steph is doing. And so that same camera crew ends up following,
[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_01]: uh, Danny around is a following Mitch around is a following Sam around the doctor and Charlie
[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_01]: as well, right? Everybody, Kim, all of them are all involved in this, uh, mockumentary
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_01]: essentially, uh, documentary if you're in inside the show. And, uh, after the doctor does
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_01]: the test on Charlie, he clearly realizes ain't shit wrong with her. Like she's clean bill of
[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_01]: health. You know what I mean? So brings in Danny and talks to him in the office. Danny
[00:43:19] [SPEAKER_01]: was like breaking down, thought this was the end of it, but realizes that, Hey, the doctor
[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_01]: is on the HIPAA loss and yeah, yes, they should have had it. So it kind of extends it. But where
[00:43:33] [SPEAKER_01]: it all breaks down is that one of the members of the camera crew was kind of like done with
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_01]: it. As you mentioned earlier, Chappelle, like everybody wants to get out and the member of
[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the camera crew is not void of that. They want one of them wants to get out as well. And so
[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_01]: it gets into a situation where there's like almost like a blackmail situation with the lead
[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_01]: camera person or the lead producer. Um, and the lead producer wants to buy into telling the
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_01]: lie, but one of the camera crew members does it. Um, who also is in love with the lead
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_01]: producer ends up telling Kim and that's when it breaks down to charity basketball, um, where
[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Kim comes to, uh, Danny and says, yo, like tell the F in truth, tell the F in truth.
[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Steph doesn't like how Kim is talking to Danny. Kim gets essentially like not fired, but it's
[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of like go on a break, go on a leave of absence for a little bit, which is the ultimate
[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_01]: breakdown. All you see this whole thing from the beginning is Kim and Steph's relationship
[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_01]: is tight. She has his back. And so to see that that's kind of almost like the last straw
[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and Danny finally feels like some sort of way about it. And so after Mitch tries to take
[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_01]: the ball for it, Danny comes clean at the charity basketball game. Steph knocks the shit out of
[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_01]: him, which I thought was a great part of, because again, people think he's soft, right?
[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what people do with light skin folks. He is light skin right here all time. We uniting.
[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_01]: We ain't soft. He puts the shit out of him and knocks him out or whatever. And that's how
[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_01]: it all kind of breaks down. And that is the downfall of the whole thing. Um, but as we mentioned
[00:45:20] [SPEAKER_01]: before and I'll let you Chappelle kind of talk about it after the downfall, it wasn't,
[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_00]: it wasn't too hard of a fall. Yeah. Cause Steph is dope. And I think that's really what it
[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_00]: comes down to. Like anybody else would have probably taken this very personally. Cause
[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_00]: this could have been, uh, this could have been the end of Steph's career. You know, he's
[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_00]: in on, he's not in on it, but he is, uh, leading the charge for a charity basketball game
[00:45:44] [SPEAKER_00]: for, uh, a scammer. It's a, it's a charity that does not exist. You know, Steph is creating
[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_00]: a charity in the name of a dying child who is not dying. And so this could be awful. He's
[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_00]: raising money. There are donors giving money, but Steph even says at one point, I'm Steph
[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Kirk. I can bounce back from any of this. Like, uh, you know, if this is a lie, we, Steph
[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_00]: initially thought this was Mitch. Mitch was taking the fall for this. And so, you know, Mitch
[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_00]: has been scamming since I was a kid. If people were going to just get, I'll give the money
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_00]: back. I'll match the donations. I'm Steph Curry. This is not going to be a problem. So
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_00]: when he finds out it's Danny, it's a personal hit to Steph, but it doesn't derail Steph in
[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_00]: any way. So him and Danny are able to bounce back after he punches Danny in the face. Now,
[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Danny, I think, I think he's, his journey is probably a more interesting than the fallout
[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_01]: he could have got from Steph. You know what I would have liked to see just to extend
[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_01]: it just a little bit more. I think it, I think the timing was pretty good on it. About
[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_01]: reaching the end. What if Danny has sued Steph Curry? Yeah. Like, cause he needs the money
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_00]: still, you know what I'm saying? Like I don't need a redemption story. I don't, I don't. Like
[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_00]: if you tell me this is the best scammer who ever existed and there's a documentary about
[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_00]: that. I'm like, I'm in, but if you tell me, yeah, this is the scammer who's not very good
[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_00]: at scamming and he just keeps narrowly, you know, escaping the moment where he should get
[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_00]: caught. That's less interesting to me. You know, I really want to see that he's either the
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_00]: best of the best or, you know, eventually it would be his own downfall. And so I, uh,
[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I would have liked to see something like that, but again, this is Steph he's unbothered.
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_00]: So he punches him in the face because that kind of sucks. Um, but ultimately this is the story
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_00]: of Danny's journey into humanity. You know, he is a scammer cause his dad is a scammer.
[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_00]: And as far as he's concerned, he's not, he cannot get around that, but we will see that he starts
[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_00]: eventually being a better ex-husband to his ex-wife, Sam. Uh, he starts being a better father
[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_00]: to Charlie. And then he's even able to look at his situation with his dad and forgive him.
[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, he really does forgive his dad and break down in the car crying. And this is a, uh,
[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_00]: a grudge he's been holding against his dad for 25 years. So for him to sit there in the car and say,
[00:47:52] [SPEAKER_00]: you know, dang, I actually could see how my dad made these mistakes, how this got out of control.
[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And I have to be able to move on because I was willing to do the same thing for my kid,
[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_00]: you know? Um, so it was a fun ride. I thought the, one of the funniest lines is when his dad's,
[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_00]: he asked his dad how long he's getting in jail. His dad's like, yeah, about 15. He's like, oh,
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_00]: 15 days or two weeks, give or take. And so he's like, no, 15 years, Danny, 15 years. I'm going to
[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_00]: jail forever for what you did. Like I'm going to prison. Thank you. Um, there were so many lines here.
[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So many lines. There was plenty of lines where once Charlie, I think the show got extremely funny.
[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Once Charlie knew all of the lines leaned in to the death. Like, I think it was, uh, one time where,
[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_01]: uh, somebody called Charlie, like, uh, uh, an angel or something like that. Well, he, and Danny was like,
[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_01]: well, soon to be angel. Like, yeah, just lead straight into it. Uh, it's extremely like the lines
[00:48:59] [SPEAKER_01]: on this show, the lines on this show is top notch. And it's, it's like a ludicrous style of rapping
[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_01]: where it's kind of like those one hitters, you know what I mean? Like it comes quick and it leaves,
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_01]: you know what I mean? It doesn't linger. It's like a quick little thing, little soft,
[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_01]: little mumble to the side and then move on to the next conversation. So I thought they,
[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_01]: they did that, uh, pretty well. And kind of like this, uh, office, you know, the office type of
[00:49:25] [SPEAKER_01]: format and talking to the camera and things like that, or reality TV show with like confessionals
[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_01]: and things like that. Um, those are some of the, the best moments, uh, for sure with the show.
[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. Um, it, it's, it's interesting to me too, because Mitch, he falls off the wagon because he knows
[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_00]: about the scam, right? He's also the ultimate scammer, but that's the thing that pushed him
[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_00]: back into his scamming ways. It was Danny's reluctance to tell the truth. That was kind of
[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_00]: like, had Mitch not been such a scammer and Danny and I picked up some of these habits for Mitch,
[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Mitch would probably still be sober. But again, he falls off the wagon because he finds out that,
[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God, I did this. I did this. And by falling off the wagon, he makes everything much worse.
[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, but yeah, it was so many, like you said, so many good lines and so many references and stuff
[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_00]: that we've seen in real life. We saw Steve Kerr as one of the people that they interview
[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_00]: and talk about how Mitch is the best coach that, uh, you know, uh, uh, that, uh, that Steph has ever
[00:50:24] [SPEAKER_00]: had. I'm sorry. He's like, yeah, what the hell is that? Meanwhile, Steve Kerr getting a lot of
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_00]: backlash for the Olympics in his coaching style. Yeah. It was perfect. Yeah. Yeah. It really was.
[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_00]: It really was that, uh, I think the other, the, I, you know, the conversation about Drake versus
[00:50:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Steph and their beef, you know, because it's like, yeah, remember that time they got into it
[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_00]: on the sidelines. They still have a grudge, a grudge about that. I loved all of this.
[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Remember when, uh, Danny and Sam was at the damn, uh, dinner table was eating dinner.
[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And the, the, the waiter comes up and he's like, are there any allergies? And they're like, yeah,
[00:50:56] [SPEAKER_00]: bees. So your food allergy is bees? She said, yeah, I just don't need to be anywhere near me.
[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I said, I low key feel it. You know, that's a person with food allergies. I got it. You know,
[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I like, I understand. Um, also everything with Kimberly was hilarious. You know, the idea that
[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_00]: she is, she is so effective and efficient that by the end she said, yes, I mean, don't get me wrong.
[00:51:22] [SPEAKER_00]: This got a, this got out of hand. Steph, he, Steph, he cut half my hours. So I'm down to 84 hours a
[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_01]: week. At one time I think it was episode two. She was like, I had to strap my titties down. Like
[00:51:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I do whatever it takes to keep up with the guys, smoke cigars, pop honey packs.
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_00]: She was one of the funniest parts. Everything about Kimberly and then leaning into Steph Curry's
[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_00]: just ridiculous amount of wealth was also so funny. He bought the bar just to shut it down
[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_00]: so that a little kid could not have her, her, her birthday party on the same day as Charlie's.
[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, you know, on the one hand, that sounds awful, but you went and bought a bar to shut it down so
[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_00]: that you can take joy from a child. What we do hear from Danny that Violet G, the little girl,
[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_00]: it's a little bit of a bee. Right. You know, she said, are you calling a 12 year old a bitch?
[00:52:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. He says, well, if the shoe fits.
[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_00]: So plenty of one linings here, plenty of moments that were just so funny, but I thought this was
[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_00]: great. I think if you're considering watching it, it's hilarious. Go check it out. And then let us
[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_00]: know what you think in the comments here or recapkickback.com slash subscribe. You can go in
[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_00]: and subscribe, but you can also email us, let us know what you're thinking. That's recapkickback

[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_00]: how'd you feel about this overall?
[00:53:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Overall, solid, solid show. Um, it's not something that I necessarily need to watch again.
[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Right. I don't think it has like high replay value or anything like that. No, I think the initial
[00:53:17] [SPEAKER_01]: watch is good. Like you, I think everybody would appreciate it. Um, I thought all of the, uh,
[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_01]: actors and actresses, um, really played their specific roles very well. Um, I, what I appreciated
[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_01]: about it the most is that you had multiple different levels of comedy styles in one show. Um,
[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_01]: nobody had a similar comedy style or anything like that. And I appreciate laughing in different
[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_01]: ways and at different things. Um, and as we talked about before, it's the one-liners. Uh,
[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_01]: there were so many one-liners, um, can't remember them all, can't write them all down or whatever,
[00:53:55] [SPEAKER_01]: but I implore everybody who's listening, but please watch it and just take note of all the damn
[00:54:01] [SPEAKER_01]: one-liners in the, in the, in the mockumentary. It was, it was done very, very well, very well.
[00:54:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. It's a good time. It really is. Uh, so yeah, shout out to Adam Polly, uh, Adam and Steph
[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_00]: and Eggo just for just giving me something to laugh at, you know, it's a quick watch 30 minute
[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_00]: episodes, nothing crazy, check it out. And then, uh, of course check out all the rest of the stuff
