Should Netflix Renew “Act Your Age”? - Episodes 1&2 Review

Chappell is back for another rendition of Recap Kickback, where we chop it up weekly about entertainment and whatever else Chappell wants to talk about.

Mari (@MariTalks2Much) is still out but Chappell (@Chappells_Show) tapped his Abbott Elementary Recap cohost Gia Worthy (@ClassicallyGia) to talk about the Bounce TV comedy “Act Your Age” that has now cracked the Top 10 on Netflix!

In the series, Bernadette (Kym Whitely), Keisha (Tisha Campbell), and Angela (Yvette Nicole Brown) are making the rest of their lives the best of their lives as roommates in a penthouse Bernadette owns in the DMV. This comedy looks at what it means to be a woman in the prime of her life trying to find love, parenting adult children, living with friends, and redefining what it means to ACT YOUR AGE. The series has not been renewed for Season 2 but hopefully it will find a new life on Netflix!

[00:00:00] What's up fam?

[00:00:18] Welcome back to Recap Kickback.

[00:00:20] It's me, your host Chappelle, and I am here with another episode of this podcast that

[00:00:26] basically just brings together a community to talk about whatever I want to talk about

[00:00:29] is normally TV.

[00:00:30] It could be music, it can be movies, it could be whatever, but everybody's invited to the

[00:00:34] Kickback and we got a lot to discuss.

[00:00:37] So as you all know, Mari is still out on maternity leave and so I had to call in the big guns

[00:00:43] to help me with this week's podcast with me, someone you might know from my Abbott Elementary

[00:00:49] coverage over on Post Short Recaps that has now come to Recap Kickback, my co-host, the

[00:00:54] principal of the Abbott Elementary Recap, it's Gia Worthy.

[00:00:58] Gia, welcome.

[00:00:59] Thank you, Chappelle.

[00:01:00] Now I want to believe that I will be an adequate replacement for Mari, but we both know that

[00:01:06] it's not true, that we can never be Mari.

[00:01:09] None of us can ever, it's not, listen, it's just a fact.

[00:01:13] It's not time for the, oh no, Gia, like you're great.

[00:01:17] I know, but like, I'm not Mari and we know that, but I also didn't recently have a child,

[00:01:22] which makes me qualified for being on this edition of Recap Kickback.

[00:01:28] See, listen, I too am not Mari and I know the people miss her.

[00:01:32] We miss her dearly.

[00:01:33] She will be back and we've got a lot of coverage of shows coming your way when she gets back.

[00:01:38] She's so ready.

[00:01:39] We've been talking, I've talked to the new baby, everything is good on the Mari front,

[00:01:44] but the show must go on.

[00:01:46] And so I've called in Gia to talk about a show that has recently cracked the Netflix

[00:01:52] Top 10.

[00:01:53] It has been renewed for Netflix or revitalized, I guess I should say, on Netflix after being

[00:01:58] canceled on its previous network.

[00:02:00] It's called Act Your Age, starring Tisha Campbell, Ken Whitley and Yvette Nicole Brown.

[00:02:06] So we're going to talk about that today, but first, we got some housekeeping things to take

[00:02:11] care of.

[00:02:12] Okay.

[00:02:13] So obviously I just want to thank everybody here for being here on Recap Kickback.

[00:02:17] If you've been subscribing, you know, we're on our journey to 1000 subscribers and we're

[00:02:21] really creeping up on that number.

[00:02:23] So keep those subscriptions coming, share the podcast with your friends and keep reviewing

[00:02:27] the podcast so other people can find it because that's the only way we're going to be able

[00:02:31] to promote this thing enough to where we start making a little money.

[00:02:34] Okay.

[00:02:35] That's the goal.

[00:02:36] You know, 1000 subscribers, let's get this bad boy monetized.

[00:02:38] Okay.

[00:02:39] So keep those views coming and keep sharing the podcast.

[00:02:43] Also we've been getting a lot of feedback again.

[00:02:45] Most of the feedback is where's Mari?

[00:02:47] We miss Mari.

[00:02:48] We love Mari.

[00:02:49] Yes, me too.

[00:02:50] Thanks mom.

[00:02:52] But we got some other feedback as well.

[00:02:54] And I really wanted to go in and read it.

[00:02:55] First of all, first off, we got a Twitter DM from being underscore loud to our at Recap

[00:03:02] Kickback Twitter account.

[00:03:03] And that person is the actual person who recommended that we talk about actor A's.

[00:03:07] They said they binged it, they loved it, and that we needed to cover it here.

[00:03:11] So we're going to talk about the first two episodes today.

[00:03:13] Also, we've been reached out to by Alex Sanfilippo from Podmatch, who says that we have a great

[00:03:20] podcast.

[00:03:22] This podcast has more episodes than most podcasts do in their infancy.

[00:03:25] So we're ahead of the curve by a lot.

[00:03:28] A lot of podcasts normally don't make it past the first episode and we're three months in

[00:03:33] here on Recap Kickback.

[00:03:34] So kudos to everybody and thank you all for listening and keeping us in the conversation.

[00:03:39] In our Facebook group, Mari herself has posted the poll, should we be covering House of

[00:03:45] the Dragon here on RecapKickback.com?

[00:03:48] And Mari's in charge.

[00:03:49] So Mari says she wants to talk about it.

[00:03:51] She's a pro, she's read the books.

[00:03:54] Nobody is more equipped to talk about this show than Mari and for her to let me talk

[00:03:58] about it with her, I am very honored.

[00:04:00] So if you have not filled out that poll, please go check it out.

[00:04:03] It's also on our Twitter page.

[00:04:04] I'll post it on the Instagram and the TikTok hopefully so that we can make sure that everybody

[00:04:08] knows that if you all want it, we will try to deliver House of the Dragon coverage to

[00:04:13] you for season two.

[00:04:15] And then we also got some feedback in the Facebook group from Kyle Stevens.

[00:04:18] He says, you got to check out Wild Card Kitchen.

[00:04:21] It's great.

[00:04:22] It's crazy.

[00:04:23] He's watching it.

[00:04:24] He loves it.

[00:04:25] Gia, you are our cooking expert here on Recap Kickback.

[00:04:28] Have you watched Wild Card Kitchen?

[00:04:30] Yes, I have.

[00:04:32] And I told you about Wild Card Kitchen because this is the show that has the one, the only

[00:04:40] Rob King, Eric Ebbayong from Top Chef.

[00:04:47] What was his first season?

[00:04:48] I can't remember, but it was Top Chef.

[00:04:50] Oh yeah, Top Chef Kentucky and then the Top Chef, the second All Stars, the good All Stars

[00:04:56] season as I like to call it.

[00:04:59] But it is such a fun show.

[00:05:01] We get a couple of former Top Chef appearances for people that are in the Bravo realm of cooking

[00:05:09] shows and it is definitely a show I highly recommend.

[00:05:14] So, Chappelle, if you guys do decide to do a recap of that, you know I am down to be

[00:05:22] a guest for that.

[00:05:23] I mean, if we do it, you would have to be the guest for it.

[00:05:26] Gia, you would be my number one chock pick to talk about it.

[00:05:30] So, yeah.

[00:05:31] So again, thank you all for listening to feedback.

[00:05:34] Thank you Kyle for that suggestion.

[00:05:36] We'll talk it through.

[00:05:37] If we got this time on our schedule, we can talk about the first season.

[00:05:40] It's already out so we can get caught up on that.

[00:05:44] And then maybe if they come out with another season, we could be right there to cover it

[00:05:46] too if Gia will grace us with her presence.

[00:05:50] I feel like that's definitely a show because it's not like a season long elimination.

[00:05:57] There's new chefs every episode.

[00:05:59] You could definitely watch an episode or two and get the gist of what the show is about

[00:06:05] so we could just kind of pick the cream of the crop of the guest judges that we want

[00:06:11] to cover.

[00:06:13] Gia, I hate to put you to work, but it sounds like you worked this out.

[00:06:17] You tell me where to go.

[00:06:19] I can send you the episodes that we're watching.

[00:06:21] Oh yeah.

[00:06:22] All right, cool.

[00:06:23] All right.

[00:06:24] So thank you Kyle.

[00:06:25] It looks like, look, you asked and so you shall receive.

[00:06:27] Gia and I will get that to you ASAP.

[00:06:30] Thank you all again for listening, giving us the feedback.

[00:06:33] Last episode, we talked about Black Twitter with Nicole Weaver, Tyrone, and Jay West.

[00:06:40] It was a great panel discussion about the Black Twitter documentary on Hulu.

[00:06:44] But now we move forward to our next big project, Act Your Age.

[00:06:48] And so Act Your Age, as I already told you, came from Bounce TV.

[00:06:52] It was on Bounce TV in 2023 and it was canceled, but it's now found a new life on Netflix and

[00:06:57] has cracked the top 10.

[00:06:59] Netflix has a track record of revitalizing shows.

[00:07:03] One very popular show, Arrested Development, was canceled in 2006 and then brought back

[00:07:10] in 2013, I believe, by Netflix.

[00:07:12] And so a lot of the fans of Act Your Age are hopeful that we get maybe a new life for this

[00:07:20] show.

[00:07:21] So I decided let's go in, we take the listener's suggestion, we'll watch it, and then we'll

[00:07:26] see if we agree that we need to bring back Act Your Age.

[00:07:29] So for this exercise, we watched the first two episodes.

[00:07:32] They are found on Netflix and Gia and I are going to discuss and make a point for why

[00:07:38] we should bring back this television show.

[00:07:40] So straight out the gate, I have to ask you, did you enjoy this?

[00:07:45] I did.

[00:07:46] Especially as we recorded the Abbott finale literally yesterday.

[00:07:54] So I have run out of sitcoms really to be watching right now.

[00:07:58] And I feel like this is really like the type of show I am looking for.

[00:08:05] It's reminiscent of one of my favorite shows.

[00:08:08] I feel like some of the comparisons to something like Golden Girls are apparent, but it also

[00:08:14] has its own spin on everything as well.

[00:08:19] So bringing some of the things back that I love about Golden Girls, but also having its

[00:08:25] own spin on the show and having a cast that I absolutely love.

[00:08:30] I feel like there are three main leading ladies here.

[00:08:34] You can't go wrong with any of them.

[00:08:36] So it was great.

[00:08:37] The first two episodes really got me invested.

[00:08:40] So I do plan on watching the rest of the season.

[00:08:43] Yeah, I'd agree.

[00:08:44] I echo those sentiments exactly.

[00:08:47] Very much Golden Girls-esque.

[00:08:48] It's about three women that are over 50 starting their new life together as friends, you know,

[00:08:54] living under the same roof.

[00:08:55] And so these are three black women exploring relationships and very affluent black women,

[00:09:02] I would say, in the DMV area.

[00:09:04] And so we get to see, I guess, an underrepresented population on television.

[00:09:09] We don't see that a lot from television shows.

[00:09:12] And like you said, with this cast, these are three heavy hitters.

[00:09:15] These are the cream of the crop a lot of times when it comes to our black actresses.

[00:09:20] You see these people and you know you got some gold.

[00:09:23] Gia, this cast, they're so good.

[00:09:26] Literally like mother matriarchs, I will say, of like great black actresses, right?

[00:09:33] Like this is and I will watch anything that any of these women are in.

[00:09:39] But I feel like we often get this treatment of women as they age in Hollywood that they

[00:09:46] get relegated to, you know, the mother role, like the side role, the like the quirky side

[00:09:53] character that only has a couple scenes per season and everything.

[00:09:57] And I love like those characters too.

[00:10:00] But these are leading ladies to me and they deserve a show that is where they are the

[00:10:06] focus of it.

[00:10:07] And that is exactly what Act Your Age is.

[00:10:10] Yes.

[00:10:11] And man, you hit the nail on the head.

[00:10:13] So these three women, I want to start, honestly, I want to start with Kim Whitley.

[00:10:19] Kim Whitley, I would say, yeah, I would say is probably the most underrated of the three

[00:10:24] of these women.

[00:10:26] I feel like she just, people don't give her what she deserves, man.

[00:10:30] This is an icon and a legend.

[00:10:33] She is, I believe, I was going to say, I believe she's from Ohio, but she's going on to be a

[00:10:41] Hollywood superstar and a lot of, you know, a lot of black homes for sure.

[00:10:45] I mean, she's in a lot of stuff that we've watched, but she has transcended into other

[00:10:49] networks.

[00:10:50] But here I love seeing her as one of the leading ladies.

[00:10:55] I just feel like I can't say enough good things about Kim Whitley from, you know, the parenthood,

[00:11:03] that's so Raven, the Parkers, my wife and kids, you know, she's just been everywhere.

[00:11:08] Friday, another big role as Craig's Aunt Sugar.

[00:11:11] You know, I love Kim Whitley and I was so excited to see her.

[00:11:15] Honestly, that was what really caught my attention when I saw that she was going to be in it.

[00:11:18] So I said, okay, I have to check this out.

[00:11:20] She's so good in the role of Bernadette through these first two episodes.

[00:11:24] It feels very lived in and I really enjoyed seeing her in this.

[00:11:28] It just feels like I've known her my whole life, you know?

[00:11:30] Yes.

[00:11:31] And if you haven't heard her or if you haven't seen her in anything, you've definitely heard

[00:11:35] her.

[00:11:36] She is known for voice roles in the Cleveland Show, Black Dynamite, the Boondocks.

[00:11:41] She's done it all.

[00:11:42] She's one of those actresses that she has her hands in a little bit of everything.

[00:11:48] So more likely than not, you have been a fan of a Kim Whitley production at some point.

[00:11:56] And I think her as the center of this cast is the perfect choice here.

[00:12:04] They move into her house.

[00:12:06] The first episode is primarily revolving around her, but we get to see that she is clearly

[00:12:13] the glue of this little trio that has formed here.

[00:12:17] And again, this is where we really start to see she is an affluent realtor, I believe

[00:12:24] is her position on here, and somebody that has really reaped the success of her work

[00:12:32] over the years.

[00:12:34] And able to have this amazing townhouse apartment.

[00:12:39] I want to live there.

[00:12:40] Yeah, like a penthouse.

[00:12:41] Yeah.

[00:12:42] Like, yes.

[00:12:43] Like a penthouse.

[00:12:44] Kimberly, can I move in?

[00:12:45] I do not take up a lot of room.

[00:12:46] Yeah.

[00:12:47] My favorite thing about-

[00:12:48] I will knock.

[00:12:49] I knock on all doors.

[00:12:50] Hashtag.

[00:12:51] Yeah.

[00:12:52] Listen, if you didn't knock on all doors after these two episodes, I bet you do.

[00:12:59] I bet you do now.

[00:13:00] I live alone and I knock on all doors now.

[00:13:05] So my favorite thing about Kim Whitley is that she is 62 years old in this, and I'm

[00:13:11] sorry you could not make me believe that.

[00:13:12] I'm sorry.

[00:13:13] Black don't crack?

[00:13:14] It don't, because if you think about the age of the Golden Girls, when I was growing up,

[00:13:20] the Golden Girls looked like elderly women, and they were younger than Kim Whitley.

[00:13:24] And she is just stunning in this role.

[00:13:27] I said, oh man, nah.

[00:13:28] This is not your mom and dad's Golden Girls.

[00:13:30] You know, this is different.

[00:13:32] And they make it very clear from the very beginning with this cast that like, this is

[00:13:37] not your mom's Golden Girls.

[00:13:39] Like this is, you know, some of the plot lines are similar.

[00:13:45] I would say the pilot of Golden Girls, particularly the marriage plot in there, is very similar

[00:13:51] to the Act Your Age one.

[00:13:54] But again, it has its own spin on it.

[00:13:56] So I'm excited to talk about the pilot episode here.

[00:14:00] Yes.

[00:14:01] So that's Bernadette.

[00:14:02] Next on our cast list, we have Tisha Campbell, the legendary Tisha Campbell.

[00:14:09] Most people know her from the sitcom Martin or My Wife and Kids.

[00:14:13] Personally, I've always been partial to her in My Wife and Kids, but Tisha Campbell has

[00:14:18] been on television forever.

[00:14:20] Forever.

[00:14:21] She is a legend in her own right.

[00:14:24] From the House Party movies, Little Shop of Horrors, she's everywhere.

[00:14:28] She's a recording artist.

[00:14:29] And I just feel like, again, this is another person who feels like although she's a legend

[00:14:34] in her own right, she does feel like an unsung hero and like we just don't give her enough

[00:14:38] flowers.

[00:14:39] And so to see her in this role as Keisha, the divorcee who has reaped a lot of very successful

[00:14:48] divorcee who got a lot of money out of her divorce.

[00:14:50] And she's like the fun one of the group.

[00:14:52] You know, I think Kim Whitley's character Bernadette is fun.

[00:14:56] But when you're looking for a good time, you definitely call Keisha.

[00:14:59] I was so excited to see Tisha Campbell in this role.

[00:15:02] So same, like I feel like her two big roles before this were Martin and My Wife and Kids.

[00:15:08] I loved My Wife and Kids when I used to have like the reruns all the time on ABC Family.

[00:15:16] And her character was fantastic.

[00:15:18] But I feel like this is such a great...

[00:15:23] What should I...

[00:15:24] How should I word this?

[00:15:25] Like such a great like spin on what she's capable of as an actress.

[00:15:32] Keisha in this show is like the free spirit.

[00:15:35] She's the artist.

[00:15:36] She's very open about like her...

[00:15:39] She's had many marriages, none of them successful.

[00:15:43] She kind of does whatever she wants and she's not afraid to get down when needed to.

[00:15:49] And also the current winner of the Amateur Stripper competition.

[00:15:54] So like we are in the presence of royalty here.

[00:15:57] Yes, go grandma, go.

[00:15:59] You know, no, I'm joking.

[00:16:01] I was offended when they did that joke.

[00:16:03] I said, damn.

[00:16:04] But no, Tisha Campbell, a queen.

[00:16:07] And it was fun to see her in this role.

[00:16:09] And then of course, last but not least, what can you say about Yvette Nicole Brown, Gia?

[00:16:14] There's so much there.

[00:16:16] Just...

[00:16:17] I had to rewind when I first saw her to be like, this is like, did they really get Yvette

[00:16:25] Nicole Brown?

[00:16:26] Like, did they get her?

[00:16:28] And they did.

[00:16:29] And I was so happy.

[00:16:31] I love her.

[00:16:34] I think I was first introduced to her in Drake and Josh when she played the manager of the

[00:16:41] movie theater.

[00:16:42] Yeah, Helen DuBois.

[00:16:45] She was the best character in that, like bar none.

[00:16:50] Her and Crazy C were holding up that show, right?

[00:16:54] Like they knew the rent was due.

[00:16:58] So I was a big fan of her.

[00:17:00] And then I got to know her more like on the community, which I think is probably the role

[00:17:05] that most people know her for where she played Sheila.

[00:17:11] Similar vibes to Shirley in Community.

[00:17:18] It's been a while since I've seen Community.

[00:17:21] So Shirley in Community.

[00:17:25] And I was a big fan of her there as well.

[00:17:28] She was, you know, such a fun character on there and kind of similar vibes to what we

[00:17:33] get here.

[00:17:34] She is the recent widow here.

[00:17:38] She was a politician's wife, I believe.

[00:17:41] And she did a lot of work and gets no credit for the amount of work that she did for her

[00:17:49] husband's career over the years.

[00:17:50] So I think this is the character I'm most excited to see development in the next couple

[00:17:56] episodes.

[00:17:58] Yes, Evina Cole Brown, one of my faves of all time as well.

[00:18:02] I remember her from Tropic Thunder.

[00:18:04] I remember I love her from Community as well, just like everybody else does.

[00:18:08] But I think the thing that stands out to me the most is that she's kind of a sci-fi nerd

[00:18:14] like me. She watched The Walking Dead.

[00:18:16] I remember her on Talking Dead all the time after the show.

[00:18:20] She's also been guest host on different talk shows because she has a point of view.

[00:18:25] I'm so excited to see exactly, you know, what they all bring to the table later on in the

[00:18:30] season, because through these first episodes, I was impressed.

[00:18:33] I really enjoyed this.

[00:18:35] And, you know, I guess I enjoyed seeing them play off of each other because they are big

[00:18:40] megastars in my eyes.

[00:18:42] And honestly, they have the careers to stand on all of the like on their pedigree and say

[00:18:48] like we deserve to be leading ladies in these roles.

[00:18:51] So it was time.

[00:18:53] You know, it just felt like it was time for us to get something like this.

[00:18:56] And we got it. And I really enjoyed those two episodes that we watched.

[00:19:01] Shout out to the creator of the show, Alison Faust and Miles Worden, one of the primary

[00:19:08] writers of the show.

[00:19:10] They did such a good job.

[00:19:11] I think I've seen somewhere that Alison had been in the writing spaces for a very long

[00:19:18] time. I'm trying to remember.

[00:19:20] I think she said she did a couple of the scary movies with Keena Ivory Wayans.

[00:19:25] And she also worked on My Wife and Kids.

[00:19:28] So it made a lot of sense for maybe like the sitcom to follow, like My Wife and Kids that

[00:19:32] she ends up doing to be this, you know, because we have Tisha Campbell in there as well.

[00:19:37] So big, big shoes on all of these women.

[00:19:41] They are icons.

[00:19:43] And I like these two episodes a lot.

[00:19:47] I really did. They were so funny and it did want me.

[00:19:50] It led me wanting more, you know, to like, OK, maybe I should complete the whole series.

[00:19:55] So maybe after we talk this through, maybe we do consider following up later on with a

[00:20:00] whole series overview of the first season.

[00:20:02] Because our goal is to get this thing renewed right now.

[00:20:05] It is not renewed.

[00:20:07] It is it is Netflix putting it on the top 10 and us saying, hey, everybody go watch

[00:20:12] this so we can get more of it.

[00:20:13] Right. Absolutely.

[00:20:15] I am ready to start advocating for Act Your Age season two.

[00:20:20] I have seen enough of season one to know that it needs a second season and I can't wait

[00:20:25] to see the rest of this.

[00:20:28] But this is like the type of shows that I have always wanted more of, you know, like,

[00:20:34] yes, we are going to be having like a women focused show, but it's on black women.

[00:20:40] And I'm sure they're going to have some episodes revolving around dating or their

[00:20:45] roles as mothers or their roles as like wives in their past relationships, like

[00:20:52] especially with the character of Angela.

[00:20:55] But it's really going to be focused on them.

[00:20:57] Like they are the leading ladies.

[00:20:59] They are the stars.

[00:21:00] And we're going to be learning more about the trials and tribulations of all of these

[00:21:04] characters. I am so excited, excited to see what we have in store for them.

[00:21:10] All right. And so we do need to get into it.

[00:21:13] So our first episode is called Secret and Lies, Secrets and Lies.

[00:21:18] And it's very much about that.

[00:21:20] We meet Bernadette.

[00:21:22] They call her Bernie for short.

[00:21:23] She is going to get married and she surprises her two friends, Keisha and Angela

[00:21:30] with this news.

[00:21:31] But prior to that, we kind of get the dynamic that these people have.

[00:21:36] It's like Bernadette is in the middle of this friend group.

[00:21:38] And then Keisha and Angela are almost like frenemies.

[00:21:41] Right. Because they get along enough to live together, Gia, but they're sniping at

[00:21:47] each other the entire time.

[00:21:48] They're at each other's throats.

[00:21:49] They tolerate one another.

[00:21:52] They both love Bernie.

[00:21:54] They want what's best for her.

[00:21:56] They were both very excited to what they thought the initial news was, which is to her

[00:22:02] getting a key to the city.

[00:22:05] That's how you know that these are affluent women, because this is like just everyday

[00:22:09] business to them.

[00:22:11] Right. Yes.

[00:22:12] And so we get we get an idea.

[00:22:15] We get the vibes on there.

[00:22:16] So like but these are clearly two very different women.

[00:22:22] So you can kind of put two and two together for maybe why they don't always get along.

[00:22:28] Right. And so Bernie is getting the key to the city.

[00:22:31] They come to see her.

[00:22:32] But the surprise is that she's getting married.

[00:22:35] She's getting married tomorrow to a man named Richard.

[00:22:37] And there's immediately some trepidation from Angela.

[00:22:41] She just doesn't she doesn't feel like this is right.

[00:22:44] You know, it feels very rushed.

[00:22:46] And she thinks that maybe they're getting married for the wrong reasons.

[00:22:51] And so deep down in her mind, she's thinking, how do I make this wedding stop?

[00:22:56] You know, this is obviously a mistake.

[00:22:58] How do I shut it down?

[00:22:59] But there's more drama coming her way because Bernie also has a secret that she's been

[00:23:04] holding from Angela.

[00:23:06] Apparently, Angela's late husband Davis, who we can't stop saying so much good stuff

[00:23:11] about. He and Bernie once slept together prior to him passing away.

[00:23:18] And I was shocked because I was thinking, oh, we're getting into this right now.

[00:23:22] We're doing this now. Episode one.

[00:23:24] OK. They really just dropped that on us and expected us to be OK for the rest of like

[00:23:30] the like 15 minutes left of the episode.

[00:23:33] Mm hmm. And it's funny because they didn't tell us that what we will eventually find

[00:23:38] out is that this this affair happened prior to Angela and Davis's marriage.

[00:23:44] I just realized their name is Angela Davis.

[00:23:47] But Angela and Davis's marriage.

[00:23:51] I didn't realize that.

[00:23:52] Yeah, so technically, I guess it's not an affair.

[00:23:55] But, you know, this man has lived a life.

[00:23:59] I think he was married to Angela for 30 years and then he died.

[00:24:02] So this is a secret they've been keeping from Angela for a very long time.

[00:24:07] And Bernie, now that she's faced with her marriage, she has talked to the marriage

[00:24:12] counselor and they've really been pushing the idea of you got to be honest.

[00:24:15] Right. You got to get this stuff off your chest before you go into a new relationship

[00:24:18] because you don't want to bring that baggage with you.

[00:24:20] So she feels like it's her duty to tell Angela what happened.

[00:24:25] But Keisha is not OK with that.

[00:24:27] She wants to have a good time this weekend.

[00:24:28] So her job this time will be to distract both of them from getting their secrets and

[00:24:33] lies all out. Yeah.

[00:24:34] How would you feel if you found out that someone that you were married to once had

[00:24:39] well, had slept with one of your friends, but they were already dead and you couldn't

[00:24:43] say nothing to them about it?

[00:24:45] I would go down to hell myself.

[00:24:50] I mean, like, OK, when I first first had this rumor, like this secret dropped on us,

[00:25:01] I was just like, well, how are they going to end up living together?

[00:25:03] Because like I could never write because it made they made it sound like and I'm

[00:25:07] assuming purposefully that this happened while they were married.

[00:25:14] And so I was just like, this is so out of pocket so fast, especially because it's a

[00:25:21] friend. Right. Like it's the it's one thing if it's a rando, right, that like you

[00:25:27] don't really know. But there's like a special type of betrayal when it's a friend,

[00:25:31] when someone that you consider like one of your closest friends.

[00:25:34] Um. But, you know, like these people do have a past life, so, you know, if this was

[00:25:43] something that happened before, I feel like I wouldn't care as much like, I don't

[00:25:48] know. I would be mad I couldn't at least get revenge about it since like the husband

[00:25:54] was dead because like.

[00:25:56] They should have told me, you know, right, I feel like this is something that could

[00:26:00] have been covered like before the wedding happened.

[00:26:04] Mm hmm. And it would have been fine, but, you know, they got to be extra about it.

[00:26:09] Right now I'm with Davis on this.

[00:26:11] I'm taking this one to my grave.

[00:26:12] You know, you got to like y'all can sort this out with I'm going.

[00:26:17] Absolutely not.

[00:26:18] No, he got off too easy.

[00:26:20] All right. Let's let us discuss that.

[00:26:22] Davis got out of this scot-free and only only Bernie had to deal with the fallout

[00:26:29] here. Yeah, that is true.

[00:26:31] One thing we will learn about Davis is that Davis was a the mayor at one point.

[00:26:35] And so Angela was essentially the first lady of the city that she was living in.

[00:26:39] But she's also very affluent in her own right because she was in law school with the

[00:26:45] Obamas. So it was her, Davis, Michelle and Barack in law school.

[00:26:49] And she is quick to remind us that she was number one of the four of them.

[00:26:53] And so while Davis has managed to exit this earth without any of the blemishes on his

[00:26:58] record, she has yet to get the accolades that she deserves for being the strong woman

[00:27:03] behind the man, but also probably better than him in a lot of ways.

[00:27:07] You know what I'm saying? Like she wasn't keeping something like this away from him.

[00:27:10] Well, kind of. We find out later on that she did to maybe have a relationship with her

[00:27:16] ex prior to the marriage.

[00:27:17] But if it's prior to the marriage, does it really count?

[00:27:20] I feel like that's on that is between the couple.

[00:27:25] You know, if you guys are fine with it before you're married, then good for you.

[00:27:30] Me, I am nosy.

[00:27:31] I want to know every relationship you had prior to me, like before your life changed

[00:27:38] for the better. And I want to I want to know all the details.

[00:27:42] Right. Like I want to know everything.

[00:27:44] I don't think I'd get mad, but I still want to know.

[00:27:47] You still want to know. Yeah.

[00:27:50] Another person who has a secret that they're keeping is Jacob.

[00:27:54] Jacob is Bernie's son.

[00:27:57] He is apparently supposed to be in college, but he is no longer doing that.

[00:28:05] He is living with his I don't know what really how to describe the relationship between

[00:28:11] Jacob and Olivia, but his friend, their besties kind of.

[00:28:18] But like it's weird.

[00:28:19] It's weird because I thought the entire first episode they were together, right?

[00:28:23] Like, yeah, I thought they were together.

[00:28:26] And then the second episode makes it clear that they're not together and that they're

[00:28:31] just best friends.

[00:28:33] But like like I know I was not crazy watching that episode.

[00:28:38] It did seem like they were together in the premiere.

[00:28:41] Yeah. So Jacob has dropped out of college and he's going to live with Olivia.

[00:28:46] Olivia is Angela's daughter and he's Bernie's son.

[00:28:51] So they have like a familial type relationship to an extent.

[00:28:55] Right. They both call each other's moms auntie.

[00:28:58] And there's that.

[00:29:00] Right. But then also we seem like there is like some, oh, y'all would be cute together.

[00:29:06] Kind of getting thrown out by the moms at different points.

[00:29:10] So I start thinking, OK, well, they're not siblings.

[00:29:12] They're obviously together.

[00:29:14] Maybe he's left college and they're now shacking up or something like that, unbeknownst

[00:29:18] to their parents. But no, he is pining for her.

[00:29:22] There is a moment where they say, oh, you would look cute together.

[00:29:26] We've always thought y'all would look cute together.

[00:29:27] And he says, me too.

[00:29:28] And that's when I say, oh, oh, y'all aren't together.

[00:29:31] Wow. Yeah.

[00:29:33] Oh, this is bad.

[00:29:36] This is bad for my boy.

[00:29:38] Yeah. This is some Gregory and Janine type pining.

[00:29:41] You know, this is not good.

[00:29:44] Do not bring Gregory and Janine into this.

[00:29:47] I'm just saying.

[00:29:49] Gregory finished school, OK?

[00:29:51] That is true. That is true.

[00:29:53] No, Jacob is just living with Olivia and secretly being in love with her while hiding

[00:29:59] that from his mom and trying to break up her marriage.

[00:30:01] They got a lot going on here.

[00:30:03] Jacob's got to get a lot together before he starts like starts stopping his mother's

[00:30:10] impending nuptials.

[00:30:11] Right. Like.

[00:30:14] You got to figure out the college thing or at least tell Bernie about the college

[00:30:18] thing and then maybe figure out what the Olivia situation like.

[00:30:23] You got a lot. Pick a struggle like you've got it.

[00:30:25] There's so much going on right now.

[00:30:28] I even just like stumbling over my words now because it's just like there's just so

[00:30:32] much there that you need to sort through here.

[00:30:36] Yeah, and he's very funny.

[00:30:37] The actor who plays Jacob had me had me dying throughout throughout this.

[00:30:43] And I had actually never seen him before.

[00:30:45] So I wasn't familiar with his work.

[00:30:46] His name is Nathan Anderson.

[00:30:48] And I'm looking now.

[00:30:50] He seems a relatively new actor.

[00:30:52] And so I'd be very excited to see if he's in anything like, you know, in a lot more

[00:30:57] projects moving forward.

[00:30:59] But I do think like, yeah, I think he's got a good chemistry about him on the show.

[00:31:04] And then, of course, there's Olivia as well, who another, you know, probably younger

[00:31:11] actress that I had never heard about before.

[00:31:13] But I was actually very impressed with her role here because she's completely

[00:31:16] oblivious to Jacob and his pining for her.

[00:31:21] I mean, it feels like she's oblivious, right?

[00:31:23] She did let him come live with with them.

[00:31:25] So, I mean, with her.

[00:31:26] So there's no way she really knows that he's in love with her.

[00:31:29] Right. I don't even know.

[00:31:32] Like how much does she know?

[00:31:33] Maybe it's one of those things where she's like, yeah, maybe.

[00:31:37] But also we're friends and we don't want to like ruin that.

[00:31:41] I'm sure we'll learn more in the rest of the season.

[00:31:44] But like this relationship is the biggest question mark to me because I don't know

[00:31:49] where like what direction they're going to go into, like with these two.

[00:31:54] But the actors themselves were great.

[00:31:58] Yeah, that's Mariah Robinson from Chicago Med and from various other projects.

[00:32:05] And so I'm very eager to see what happens between the two of them.

[00:32:09] But our more pressing matter is this wedding and all these big reveals.

[00:32:14] So Keisha knows that she needs to distract Bernie and Angela.

[00:32:17] So she decides to take them to a gentleman's club where the strippers are

[00:32:21] scantily clad and so are the other patrons of the gentleman's club.

[00:32:26] And that's when it starts to really set in, you know, the age difference between

[00:32:30] these women and maybe some of the younger leading ladies of other shows,

[00:32:34] because they're comfortable in a gentleman's club, but they're also like

[00:32:39] a little bit more buttoned up than you would think for people at a strip club

[00:32:42] for a bachelorette party.

[00:32:44] But yeah, they were able to get VIP bottle service because they dropped Angela's name.

[00:32:49] Now that's when you know you got some clout.

[00:32:51] They bootleg Michelle Obama is doing it.

[00:32:55] My heart broke for her when somebody called her that.

[00:32:58] It was so bad.

[00:33:00] I, I couldn't I would never recover.

[00:33:03] Never, never recover from there.

[00:33:05] But but, you know, again, these women have money.

[00:33:09] So like they can afford bottle service and they have the clout

[00:33:14] to achieve such a status.

[00:33:17] So there is a what's the word?

[00:33:21] There is a perk to being a woman of age at the gentleman's club.

[00:33:27] You have money.

[00:33:28] Yeah, you got money.

[00:33:29] You got good seats, you know, and you got bottle service.

[00:33:33] Yeah. And again, they walked right in.

[00:33:35] They didn't have to get on the list or anything.

[00:33:36] They just dropped Angela's name and it was all good.

[00:33:38] Some shenanigans occur.

[00:33:40] And then eventually Bernie starts feeling too guilty to keep this to herself.

[00:33:44] And she has to come out and say the words, you know.

[00:33:49] She said it.

[00:33:50] She admitted that she slept with Davis prior to this, to him and Bernie.

[00:33:57] I'm sorry, him and Angela getting together.

[00:33:59] And while this initial shock does slow Angela down.

[00:34:03] She's OK. She's fine.

[00:34:05] She bounces back because she too has like like we said prior to the marriage

[00:34:09] has a previous life.

[00:34:10] So, you know, she understands.

[00:34:13] See, yeah, but also like I feel like you could have said this way earlier,

[00:34:19] like it was before the marriage.

[00:34:21] So I don't know.

[00:34:23] I think this could have been resolved 20 years ago, personally.

[00:34:27] Yeah, at least 20, maybe 30.

[00:34:29] I mean, like this like 30, 30 and some change years ago,

[00:34:33] you know, like this has been resolved easily.

[00:34:36] But then we wouldn't have the premiere episode.

[00:34:39] So I guess we all win.

[00:34:41] Yeah. The other big reveal eventually comes out as well.

[00:34:45] Angela is not a big fan of this relationship with Bernie and Richard.

[00:34:50] She's just like, hey, maybe explore what this means for you.

[00:34:55] You know, she's concerned.

[00:34:58] A weed cookie later, there is a confession made by Bernie

[00:35:02] where she calls Richard and she leaves him a voicemail.

[00:35:06] It says something to the effect of,

[00:35:10] are you trying to be her Jay-Z to her Beyonce?

[00:35:13] Or do you need to go to the left, to the left?

[00:35:15] It was it was very 50 year old woman.

[00:35:22] It was great.

[00:35:24] Yeah, they were they were toasted on the weed cookies.

[00:35:28] I don't know if that's is that your bag.

[00:35:30] Is that something you partake in?

[00:35:32] I've been known

[00:35:35] more so to fall asleep, though, like my phone is far away from me

[00:35:38] when those are when

[00:35:42] when that is in my system.

[00:35:45] Yeah, the shenanigans occur.

[00:35:47] Yeah, the shenanigans occur.

[00:35:49] I feel like honestly, I am older than them because I usually use them to fall asleep.

[00:35:54] So, yeah, these women were wide awake and making mistakes.

[00:36:00] Yes, mistakes were made.

[00:36:04] And, you know, like I am blessed to live

[00:36:09] in the great commonwealth of Massachusetts, where such paraphernalia is legal.

[00:36:16] You know, thank you.

[00:36:18] Thank you, voters.

[00:36:19] And, you know, we're just we support the legal process here.

[00:36:24] Yeah, I live in Texas where it's basically the Middle Ages.

[00:36:29] So nothing, nothing legal except guns.

[00:36:32] You're not like executed for weed down there?

[00:36:34] Like, yeah, pretty much.

[00:36:35] Yeah, literally nothing is legal.

[00:36:38] Yeah, that's the only thing legal, though.

[00:36:39] Murder. That's it.

[00:36:40] Everything else off the table.

[00:36:44] Yeah, but but it's legal where they are, too.

[00:36:46] Again, they're in they're in the DMV.

[00:36:48] And so although they are higher off the weed cookies,

[00:36:51] the one mistake they do make is they let Bernie get a hold of her phone.

[00:36:54] And yeah, she ends up talking to her soon to be husband.

[00:36:59] And based on the message that she got,

[00:37:02] it's not going to work out for the two of them.

[00:37:04] And he shuts it down.

[00:37:06] And so now she's all alone.

[00:37:08] She's alone.

[00:37:09] We find out Keisha is alone because of her divorces and her husband.

[00:37:13] She might have got all the stuff in her divorce, all the money.

[00:37:15] But her husband got all the friends.

[00:37:17] And Angela, we know, is a widow.

[00:37:19] So between the three of them, they got a lot of time on their hands,

[00:37:22] a lot of money, and they want to get the French,

[00:37:25] the French group back together in one spot.

[00:37:27] And so Bernie invites them all to live in their penthouse in the DMV area.

[00:37:33] And I don't think this sounds like a dream.

[00:37:34] You know, a bunch of rich people live on roof.

[00:37:36] Yeah. Good time.

[00:37:38] Oh, yeah. Oh, my God.

[00:37:40] The that that house, right?

[00:37:43] Like that living space.

[00:37:47] And only three people are living in there.

[00:37:49] And like I'm sure they have rent figured out in some way

[00:37:51] that they are not concerned about. That is the dream.

[00:37:55] Mm hmm. Yeah, yeah.

[00:37:56] I'm sure whatever this is, it's owned.

[00:37:59] And so they're not paying rent to to Bernie.

[00:38:01] They're just going to be moving in, drinking wine, dancing,

[00:38:04] doing the electric slide and having a good time.

[00:38:06] So the first episode leaves you in a moment where you're like,

[00:38:10] dang, what could go wrong?

[00:38:11] You know, obviously there's some personality differences,

[00:38:14] but through the first episode, I was very happy with the premiere.

[00:38:17] Oh, yeah, it was great.

[00:38:18] It made me very excited for what comes next.

[00:38:23] You know, like I was invested in the characters

[00:38:26] to get an idea of who they all are as personalities

[00:38:30] and what possible dynamics could be coming into play in future episodes.

[00:38:36] Yeah. And so we move into that very quickly with episode two.

[00:38:41] Episode two, it starts with, you know,

[00:38:44] what we see is I guess when they first start getting into the cohabitation,

[00:38:49] the growing pains of living with somebody as grown people.

[00:38:53] It's automatically hard to live with other people like, you know,

[00:38:56] when you're in college or you're younger, you know, it feels like, OK,

[00:38:59] having a roommate, that's normal.

[00:39:00] But I guess when you've lived a full life, you've had marriages,

[00:39:03] you've had a divorce, you've lived by yourself, you've made your own money.

[00:39:07] Cohabitating at that point has to be a lot harder.

[00:39:10] Right. You have your differences.

[00:39:12] You have the things that you're just completely setting your ways about.

[00:39:15] They're non-negotiables.

[00:39:16] And then you have to deal with other people's quirks as well.

[00:39:20] Gia, let's start with the bedsocks of it all.

[00:39:25] Tell me. Tell me you're not a bit.

[00:39:27] OK, cool. I was about to say, Gia, I have to walk off this podcast.

[00:39:30] Tell me you don't wear bedsocks.

[00:39:32] OK, first of all, absolutely not.

[00:39:34] How do you wear socks to bed?

[00:39:38] I don't get it.

[00:39:39] And they get so irritating, right?

[00:39:41] Like they just like they're itchy.

[00:39:43] And no. So I am not for the bedsocks.

[00:39:49] I do have a couple fuzzy socks that I use for to,

[00:39:53] you know, walk around the house and whatnot.

[00:39:56] Um, but also I don't know.

[00:39:59] I don't know about you, Chappelle.

[00:40:01] But when I did have roommates,

[00:40:05] I live alone now, which is one of my favorite personality traits about me.

[00:40:11] But. Why would you just take someone's socks out of the dryer

[00:40:16] and wear them yourself like Bernie?

[00:40:18] I was rooting for you here.

[00:40:20] And I just can't support that.

[00:40:22] I'm sorry. What's mine is mine and what yours is yours.

[00:40:26] Yeah, they've known each other for a very long time.

[00:40:28] But please don't just take my stuff.

[00:40:29] You know, like that just feels like a bare minimum requirement of friendship.

[00:40:33] I think like my longest friendships have been like

[00:40:36] currently are the ones that have lasted like 10 years and stuff like that.

[00:40:40] Like I even then I am not borrowing anybody's socks.

[00:40:44] I'm not I'm not just taking somebody's socks to use for myself.

[00:40:48] If I need a pair of socks, they will give me a pair of socks.

[00:40:51] But like it is not I'm not down bad, that bad yet.

[00:40:55] So so you have a lot of siblings.

[00:40:57] What about a sibling?

[00:40:58] Because siblings often kind of adopt the yours and mine.

[00:41:03] Absolutely. I was just about to get into that.

[00:41:05] And also, absolutely not. Absolutely not.

[00:41:09] No, I think it helps that.

[00:41:12] So my I have one sister and three brothers.

[00:41:18] So brothers are not necessarily looking to wear my stuff anytime soon.

[00:41:27] And my sister and I have like different enough styles

[00:41:31] where it's like if she needed to borrow,

[00:41:34] if she wanted like to borrow something or she needed

[00:41:37] like socks or some new outfit or anything like that,

[00:41:41] I wouldn't mind giving it to her.

[00:41:42] We're similar sizes, so that wouldn't be a problem.

[00:41:45] But just taking it like I can't imagine going into her room

[00:41:49] and just like grabbing something like it's mine and wearing it out

[00:41:54] and just like acting like there is nothing wrong.

[00:41:56] Like at the very least, you ask.

[00:41:58] I think this is like a very specific sibling experience, but also absolutely not.

[00:42:06] But I know that like the typical sibling experience is that it's like

[00:42:11] what's yours, mine and what's mine is also mine.

[00:42:13] See, for me, I'm a what's mine is mine.

[00:42:17] If you want to ask for it and you will probably get it.

[00:42:19] I am not that territorial about my stuff.

[00:42:22] My brother is the polar opposite of me.

[00:42:25] He knows that I am not territorial about my stuff.

[00:42:28] So he takes it freely.

[00:42:29] My brother would take food.

[00:42:31] Are you the older one or is he the older one?

[00:42:33] I am the older one.

[00:42:34] I am the older one.

[00:42:35] Yes.

[00:42:36] Yeah.

[00:42:37] And he would take food out of my hand and not even ask.

[00:42:40] He's reaching in the fries and walking away as if nothing happened.

[00:42:42] If we're talking about food, absolutely.

[00:42:45] Absolutely.

[00:42:45] There are minutes I am starving because of all of them.

[00:42:49] I have walked into plenty of rooms where my brother is half of his outfit is mine.

[00:42:55] Just, and it's like, it's normal.

[00:42:57] I'm like, how did you get that?

[00:42:58] Where did you, how did you get into my home?

[00:43:00] You know what I'm saying?

[00:43:01] Like, those are the questions I asked my brother and he has no, like no

[00:43:04] question about it, but he's like, I'm not going to ask for anything.

[00:43:07] And I'm like, I'm not going to ask for anything.

[00:43:09] I'm just going to ask for my brother.

[00:43:10] And he has no, like no qualms about it.

[00:43:13] So.

[00:43:14] My dad famously says that my brother's favorite food is whatever we're eating.

[00:43:20] Like whatever I am eating or he is eating, that's my brother's favorite food.

[00:43:25] Yeah.

[00:43:26] See, this is why my brother and I could not live together because immediately

[00:43:29] I know my stuff, it becomes our stuff and his stuff will be his stuff because

[00:43:34] I don't have it in me to treat him like that.

[00:43:35] Um, not net, not clothes, but like a video games, uh, Xbox consoles,

[00:43:41] uh, Xbox controllers, um, room space just in general using it.

[00:43:47] So people can play Xbox in two different places.

[00:43:49] And the arguments I have had for people to just clean up after

[00:43:54] their damn stuff in my own room.

[00:43:55] There is still a glitter spot from like when, remember when slime was popular.

[00:44:00] I hope my students are listening to this right now because there is this gold

[00:44:04] glitter spot on my black area rug in my dad's house, in the basement that I

[00:44:10] purchased with my own money, my own college student money that never got out.

[00:44:14] And I am still mad about it.

[00:44:16] So yeah, I hope they know I did not forget.

[00:44:20] No, we will never forget.

[00:44:27] In the words of Sandra Diaz Twine, I don't forgive and I don't forget.

[00:44:31] That part.

[00:44:32] Listen, we, we deal with all of that and more in this episode with these

[00:44:36] friends, um, immediately out the gate.

[00:44:38] We see Angela is rearranging Bernie's stuff because the kitchen

[00:44:41] isn't set up to her, her liking.

[00:44:43] We get Bernie wearing a sock.

[00:44:45] Zia, you're just not good with any of this.

[00:44:46] Are you?

[00:44:46] No, no.

[00:44:47] This all bothers me so much.

[00:44:51] I just, I like who just, who just arranges your kitchen without like this, this was

[00:44:58] a listen, I still love the show, but this episode was triggering to me.

[00:45:02] Yeah.

[00:45:03] I thought the most upsetting thing about this episode would be the fact that it

[00:45:06] opens with them standing over the lifeless body of an older man.

[00:45:10] Uh, but no, honestly, honestly, all of these territory.

[00:45:15] Right, exactly.

[00:45:16] I was not concerned with how this man died and why, uh, Keisha's holding a knife

[00:45:20] over him, why Bernie's doing chest compression?

[00:45:23] Like I, I, it didn't bother me at all, but what bothered me was please don't

[00:45:27] bring your ugly paint painting into my home and expect for me to look at it every time.

[00:45:32] Because that painting Zia was hideous.

[00:45:34] I feel like you could have just put the painting in your room, right?

[00:45:38] Like, like just put it in your room.

[00:45:42] You have your own space.

[00:45:43] This is a huge, huge space for your paintings.

[00:45:48] Yeah.

[00:45:49] And the cool thing is that Bernie is the landlord of this building, right?

[00:45:52] She owns this building.

[00:45:53] So she essentially is like, look, just put it in a hallway behind

[00:45:57] a plant or something like that.

[00:45:58] I just don't want to see it in my home.

[00:45:59] And up to that, I'd say yes, please.

[00:46:01] Because Keisha felt very strongly about this ugly ass painting.

[00:46:05] Uh, there's hair in the painting.

[00:46:08] There's eyeballs glued to the painting.

[00:46:11] I saw an ear.

[00:46:13] An ear, a couple, I think it was like maybe like three ears.

[00:46:16] It was awful from beginning to end.

[00:46:19] Yeah.

[00:46:20] And so nobody is a fan of this.

[00:46:23] This, this painting is so bad that it eventually causes Mr.

[00:46:27] Henry's, the nosy downstairs neighbor to pass out and almost have a heart attack.

[00:46:33] We haven't really talked about Mr.

[00:46:34] Henry's much, but, um, he sucks.

[00:46:37] This guy is all in a business.

[00:46:39] He won't let them live their life.

[00:46:40] He has complaints about everything.

[00:46:42] And, uh, he is going to let these women know how he feels about them at every turn.

[00:46:47] Uh, we find out he's a very lonely man and he has a son that's a police officer

[00:46:50] who will later on come to his rescue when he damn near has a heart

[00:46:53] attack looking at that painting.

[00:46:55] Um, what did you think about this storyline overall?

[00:46:57] Okay.

[00:46:58] Can I like share a little antidote here for my experience?

[00:47:02] So I live in a condo complex and I am on the second floor of this complex.

[00:47:07] So there is someone that lives directly underneath me and has very similar vibes.

[00:47:12] Right.

[00:47:13] Like very, uh, similar, like complaints about my business and all that stuff.

[00:47:19] I had so one time, right.

[00:47:21] Um, I, when it was getting close to winter, you know, like Massachusetts

[00:47:26] weather, sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's cold.

[00:47:28] So I put on like automatic, um, heat so that it gets to a certain

[00:47:33] temperature and then it turns off.

[00:47:35] But when it was hotter out, I would just turn it off before I left the house

[00:47:38] and then like turn it on, um, like while I was out and about, and before I go to

[00:47:43] bed, right around when it was still like 50, 60 degrees out, I would turn the heat

[00:47:47] off while he had a problem with this and he could hear it.

[00:47:49] So then one time when I did have the heat on, he called the condo complex to complain

[00:47:56] about what I was doing with my heat because he was worried about the pipes.

[00:48:01] So they called my dad.

[00:48:03] Cause my dad is, uh, like the technical owner of this, of my space.

[00:48:10] He calls me, I tell him to go check it, but I know it's on.

[00:48:12] Cause I looked at it before I left and long story short, I was right.

[00:48:18] And now I vacuum very late at night now.

[00:48:21] Yes.

[00:48:22] And tap dance as well.

[00:48:23] You know, I've been taking up tap.

[00:48:26] I've been taking up clogging.

[00:48:27] Um, just like get like different, different types of, uh, uh, very

[00:48:32] obnoxious, uh, hard heel shoes.

[00:48:35] Um, I guess you could say that's now I now vacuum, um, anywhere between like 11

[00:48:41] PM to 2 AM at night, just, you know, and this is, it's been about a year.

[00:48:46] And yes.

[00:48:49] Yeah.

[00:48:50] He deserved it.

[00:48:50] Yeah.

[00:48:51] That listen, let's, let's all just mind our own businesses.

[00:48:53] How about that?

[00:48:54] You know, um,

[00:48:55] when I, all of this to say, when this episode aired, I just think the

[00:49:02] women didn't go far enough, you know?

[00:49:04] Like I feel like I just think there are things that they could have done to

[00:49:09] combat, um, this neighbor's complaint.

[00:49:14] Cause really what is he going to do?

[00:49:15] He's complaining to the landlord, right?

[00:49:17] Like, yeah.

[00:49:18] Yeah.

[00:49:18] Like who you're going to talk to about it?

[00:49:20] You know, I think she, she, she threatened to put baby oil on

[00:49:23] the floor in front of his door.

[00:49:25] I said, oh, she should have done that.

[00:49:27] You know, like don't just say you're going to do that actions.

[00:49:32] Yeah.

[00:49:33] So listen, all of this comes to a head, uh, in several different ways.

[00:49:37] Um, first off the painting.

[00:49:40] Um, eventually it comes out that this is just an awful painting, you know,

[00:49:44] a damn near kills Mr.

[00:49:45] Henry's and they have to talk to, uh, to Keisha about her artwork and say,

[00:49:49] listen, we know you love it.

[00:49:50] I don't love it.

[00:49:51] Let's not force this up on each other.

[00:49:52] And so she kind of comes to terms with that.

[00:49:55] Um, as far as those, uh, bed socks goes, Angela decides instead of handling

[00:50:01] this like an adult, she's going to sneak into, uh, Bernie's room and.

[00:50:06] Gingerly remove the socks from her feet, wash them, dry them obviously.

[00:50:12] And then put them on her feet so that she can get a good night's sleep

[00:50:14] because she cannot sleep with her socks off, which is obviously her fault

[00:50:19] because that's a, that's a criminal, uh, like a trait, right?

[00:50:22] That's, that's a sign of psychosis is that you cannot sleep without socks on.

[00:50:26] Like, what are you talking about?

[00:50:27] Yeah.

[00:50:27] You can't sleep without socks.

[00:50:32] Girl.

[00:50:33] I know she's been going through a lot with her husband dying

[00:50:37] and everything, but like girl.

[00:50:39] So this is a trauma response is what you're saying?

[00:50:41] Yes, absolutely.

[00:50:42] There is no logical explanation for this.

[00:50:45] Yeah.

[00:50:46] And, uh, so she felt like it was logical to go into that bedroom

[00:50:50] and take those socks off.

[00:50:52] Um, were you surprised when we found out that, uh, when she entered, she found

[00:50:59] Bernie paddling the pink canoe, as they say.

[00:51:03] Um, I can't believe they went there in the second episode.

[00:51:08] You know, like I thought like that's like a later down the line, like, you

[00:51:12] know, after you tested the waters of like one year.

[00:51:14] Warm it up a little bit.

[00:51:15] Yeah.

[00:51:15] Yeah.

[00:51:16] We were already warmed up apparently.

[00:51:18] Apparently one episode was enough.

[00:51:20] Um, she was, uh, spending some quality time with herself.

[00:51:26] Um, and this is why you knock, but also like how brave of her for doing

[00:51:32] this with other people in that household.

[00:51:36] Yeah.

[00:51:37] Yeah.

[00:51:38] This was a, this was a shock.

[00:51:39] Angela is probably the least equipped person to walk in on

[00:51:42] something like this as well.

[00:51:43] Like of the three of them, she's the one who this, this is going

[00:51:46] to hit the hardest for her.

[00:51:47] Okay.

[00:51:48] And so because of this, they have to establish some, some boundaries,

[00:51:52] some normal ass boundaries, not before you enter don't move other people's

[00:51:57] stuff without talking about it.

[00:51:58] Don't take other people's things.

[00:52:00] These to me, this feels like something you, these are the conversations you

[00:52:03] have before you move in with somebody.

[00:52:06] Uh, you shouldn't have to stay with somebody for a week and all of this

[00:52:09] happened before you realized we should set some rules and like, I get that

[00:52:13] they are, they were all friends before this.

[00:52:16] Um, so maybe they thought that.

[00:52:19] They did not need to do something like this, but also like, this is like

[00:52:25] the first thing that you do when you're an RA or like when you go to college,

[00:52:30] you make a roommate agreement.

[00:52:31] Don't touch my shit.

[00:52:33] Don't, you know, knock when you come in or have a, have a code for when you

[00:52:38] need some alone time in your room.

[00:52:39] Like there, you know, they're just, there, there has to be rules

[00:52:43] because otherwise chaos erupts.

[00:52:46] Yeah.

[00:52:47] Um, and there was chaos, but they got to the bottom of it.

[00:52:50] They all came to terms with what was going on.

[00:52:52] They saved Mr.

[00:52:52] Henry's life and then, uh, they move on to bigger and better things.

[00:52:56] But the B plot is something that I really wanted to talk about.

[00:52:59] Olivia and Jacob, they're still living together.

[00:53:02] And like you said, in this episode, it becomes abundantly clear that there is

[00:53:05] no romantic involvement between the two of them.

[00:53:07] Um, but they are cute together.

[00:53:10] Gia, the whole black Dean of it all.

[00:53:14] Do you remember the plot to black Dean too?

[00:53:16] No, I do not.

[00:53:17] And I feel like very, um, I felt very Caucasian in this moment.

[00:53:23] I will say, look, they made this shit up, but a black Dean apparently

[00:53:27] is a fictional black cartoon superhero or superhero character.

[00:53:32] Um, who was a mixed, like it feels like maybe very black dynamite,

[00:53:36] black exploitationist, um, because, um, he, um, he's an African

[00:53:41] American studies professor.

[00:53:43] So he wears a bow tie, obviously.

[00:53:45] Uh, and he is his superpowers that he is the HNIC, the head Negro in charge.

[00:53:50] Again, obviously.

[00:53:51] Um, and his catchphrase is you just failed your pop quiz.

[00:53:57] And so this is their favorite superhero together, Olivia and Jacob.

[00:54:02] They bonded over him.

[00:54:03] And so Jacob has decided that he wants to, um, he wants to dress up as black

[00:54:10] Dean so that he can win the affection of Olivia who would then be black

[00:54:14] Dean's, uh, nosy TA that he wants to seduce and ride off in the

[00:54:19] sunset with in a Cadillac.

[00:54:20] So that's what Jacob's going for here.

[00:54:22] And he does, he does dress up as black Dean.

[00:54:25] Uh, he's got his underwear on the outside of his pants.

[00:54:27] Very quail man of him.

[00:54:29] Uh, he's got a bow tie, very nation of Islam of him and it's a little raggedy.

[00:54:35] Not gonna lie to you.

[00:54:37] It's not the, it's not the best, but you can tell he's putting effort into it.

[00:54:40] Gia, are you rooting for Jacob?

[00:54:43] Oh my God.

[00:54:43] Yes.

[00:54:44] Like he is a nerd.

[00:54:45] He's like adorable little nerd.

[00:54:47] He's got to figure out a lot in his life before I personally think he can be

[00:54:52] pursuing a romantic relationship.

[00:54:54] Right.

[00:54:55] Like he's got to still like, I did not forget about the college thing.

[00:54:58] Okay.

[00:54:59] Like he, he still has not told his mother about it.

[00:55:01] So you need, he needs to get himself together, but he does mean well.

[00:55:08] And he does seem like a very sweet kid.

[00:55:12] Um, I really shouldn't be calling him a kid cause like he is of college age,

[00:55:16] but like, to me, college students are still kids, right?

[00:55:18] Like, yeah.

[00:55:19] Yeah.

[00:55:20] Them babies.

[00:55:21] These are babies.

[00:55:22] Yeah.

[00:55:23] Unfortunately for Jacob, Olivia does not have eyes for him, but she has eyes

[00:55:27] for a man named Malcolm who, uh, is a more polished version of Jacob.

[00:55:32] Right?

[00:55:32] So Jacob has his makeshift outfit that he completely made from scratch.

[00:55:36] You can tell.

[00:55:37] Uh, and then Malcolm walks in, uh, and his very much, you know,

[00:55:41] official black Dean costume.

[00:55:43] Uh, and it's clear that Olivia only has eyes for Malcolm and it's

[00:55:47] like, this is the struggle, right?

[00:55:49] We're going to watch Jacob pining for her while she's with the other guy.

[00:55:53] Who's got it all together.

[00:55:55] Who's got the good outfit, very smart.

[00:55:57] He quotes bell hooks.

[00:55:58] What else could you want?

[00:55:59] You know, as far as Olivia is concerned when, but Jacob is right there by

[00:56:04] the end of the episode, he just looks over and says to Malcolm, I hate you.

[00:56:07] And so he can't even hide his disdain for this man.

[00:56:10] Uh, Jacob is in hell.

[00:56:12] He's down bad.

[00:56:13] And personally.

[00:56:15] I'm rooting for him.

[00:56:16] I got to watch the end to see if he makes any type of progress by the

[00:56:20] end of the season to winning Olivia's heart, because she just doesn't feel

[00:56:24] like she's interested at all right now.

[00:56:26] Yeah.

[00:56:26] I think, I think they both just need some time to kind

[00:56:29] of figure out what they want.

[00:56:30] And maybe, maybe it doesn't up that, you know, they're better off as friends.

[00:56:34] I'm not necessarily like sold a hundred percent on their relationship right now.

[00:56:40] Like just because you grew up together doesn't mean you're for one another.

[00:56:45] But I do like the character separately.

[00:56:47] And hopefully that means like, if they do come together, it

[00:56:50] will be a very cute relationship.

[00:56:52] Yeah.

[00:56:53] Jacob talks to his mom, Bernie and tells him, you know, like, I mean, tells her

[00:56:56] like, Hey, Olivia is just, I'm in love with her.

[00:56:59] It's I know it's my deep dark secret.

[00:57:01] She's like, bro, everybody can tell.

[00:57:02] Everybody knows anybody with eyes can see it except Olivia apparently.

[00:57:07] Um, and he, and he tells her that, you know, I'm crazy about her, but I don't

[00:57:11] know how to move about this because she's my best friend and she gives him some sage wisdom.

[00:57:16] She says, sometimes it's better to have a best friend than the next lover.

[00:57:20] And so, um, you know, this could end bad for him.

[00:57:24] Like you were saying, maybe they're not made to be together, but it feels like

[00:57:27] he's not going to come to that conclusion easily is going to have to get some

[00:57:31] bruises throughout this season before he decides to let that one go.

[00:57:36] Um, but again, I can't help a root for him.

[00:57:38] I think Abbott has desensitized me.

[00:57:40] I think it's made me soft.

[00:57:42] I think it like after the season we just went through, it's like anything is possible.

[00:57:46] You know, like we can, but also he is just like a lovable character.

[00:57:51] He's young.

[00:57:52] He's kind of nerdy.

[00:57:54] He has a lot of stuff he has to figure out.

[00:57:56] Like you, there's nothing to dislike about him yet.

[00:58:00] He's very funny.

[00:58:02] So like, I want good things for him, but we will see what those

[00:58:06] good things are down the road.

[00:58:08] Yeah, we will definitely see because those are our first two episodes.

[00:58:11] That's Act Your Age episodes one and two.

[00:58:13] Um, we have, obviously there's more episodes of the season left and we will

[00:58:17] cover that if you all decide that you want to hear it, so please leave in the

[00:58:21] comments on recapkickback.com or YouTube page, uh, youtube.com slash at recap

[00:58:27] kickback drop down in the comments and let us know, do you want more coverage

[00:58:31] of Act Your Age, should we finish the entire season or should we move on to

[00:58:33] something else?

[00:58:34] You let us know because, um, personally I don't want this show to be canceled.

[00:58:38] I've been seeing a lot of good feedback on it since it's hit Netflix.

[00:58:42] And again, if we're not watching and supporting our shows that are black

[00:58:45] led or minority led or people of color led, then they're going to fall to the

[00:58:49] wayside.

[00:58:49] So many of the other shows have been put on pause, um, such as Summer

[00:58:53] House Martha's Vineyard.

[00:58:55] Um, rap shit is gone now.

[00:58:57] Grand crew is gone.

[00:58:58] Now you get my gist.

[00:58:59] We're losing a lot of recipes here, y'all.

[00:59:01] So we got to push through and we got to promote these shows when we have them.

[00:59:05] Absolutely.

[00:59:06] A hundred percent.

[00:59:07] Cosign everything.

[00:59:09] Yes.

[00:59:09] And Gia, in the meantime, Abbott we know has been renewed because Abbott will go

[00:59:15] on forever.

[00:59:15] It will go on forever and ever and ever.

[00:59:17] And so we will be back next season to talk about Abbott Elementary season four

[00:59:21] episodically right here on recapkickback.com.

[00:59:24] But in the meantime, thank you so much for coming on here and talking to me

[00:59:28] about Act Your Age.

[00:59:29] It's been so much fun.

[00:59:30] Thank you.

[00:59:30] And thank you for introducing me to the show.

[00:59:33] I have not been really keeping up with the Netflix shows in general.

[00:59:38] So this was a, uh, like a nice treat for, for me.

[00:59:43] Like this was a nice little surprise to my week that I ended up really enjoying.

[00:59:48] Yeah.

[00:59:48] And, uh, until Abbott returns, what else do you have going on in your world?

[00:59:54] Oh my God.

[00:59:55] So you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok at classically Gia for all of

[01:00:00] my reality TV shenanigans.

[01:00:03] Um, over on silent podcast, I am recapping.

[01:00:07] Um, we just Chappelle and I just finished actually recapping survivor

[01:00:10] 46 on my podcast.

[01:00:12] I don't know about that.

[01:00:14] And we are finishing up quick fire cleans over on silent podcast.

[01:00:19] Um, the top chef, Wisconsin is the season that we're currently recapping.

[01:00:24] And I'm very excited to, uh, see how this season ends.

[01:00:28] Even though again, this was like the worst elimination almost ever.

[01:00:33] Um, and I hated every moment of it, but it's okay.

[01:00:36] It's okay.

[01:00:37] And I'm, I'm, I'm not over it, but I will persevere.

[01:00:41] And on inside survivor, Christine Palin and I just finished the, uh,

[01:00:47] survivor 46 roundup, and now we're moving towards 50 for 50.

[01:00:52] That's where, uh, five inside survivor writers are writing 10 articles each.

[01:00:56] That's 50 altogether about the survivor players that we want to see return for

[01:01:01] survivor 50, which is confirmed to be a season that will feature returnees.

[01:01:07] I am very excited to see the results of that and to see, um, our little

[01:01:11] odes to all of these great cast members of seasons past.

[01:01:15] So it'll be very good.

[01:01:17] Gia, thank you so much for joining me once again.

[01:01:20] Thank you all for listening to recap kickback.

[01:01:23] Send us your feedback.

[01:01:24] Let us know what it is you want to talk about.

[01:01:26] And I will try to get it covered here on the podcast because everybody's

[01:01:29] invited to the kickback and I want to make sure that everybody's represented.

[01:01:32] So let me know what you got going on.

[01:01:34] Follow me on all social media platforms at recap kickback to

[01:01:37] keep up with all I have coming up.

[01:01:39] Um, you can catch me on our IHAP talking about various other shows below deck.

[01:01:44] You can also catch me on talking about the goat milf manner.

[01:01:49] Yeah, I know it sounds crazy over there on our IHAP, but trust me on this one.

[01:01:52] It's a good time.

[01:01:53] And then, um, yeah, also check out the nothing but Netflix podcast hosted by

[01:01:57] Rob Cestanino and myself, where every week we talk about a different Netflix

[01:02:01] show that's in the top 10.

[01:02:03] That's new.

[01:02:03] That's trending, um, something very much like, uh, act your age.

[01:02:07] And so if you want more Netflix content for me, you can catch me on

[01:02:10] the nothing but Netflix podcast.

[01:02:12] Um, over on the Rob has a podcast, our IHAP network.
