[00:00:19] Recap Kickback. Yes, it's Chappelle and I'm back on the podcast where we talk about the Black
[00:00:24] Entertainment News of the Week and we also talk about Black media, television, wherever we can.
[00:00:29] We do recaps of TV shows but when we first started we were doing top 10 lists, we were
[00:00:34] drafting different things, we had a whole bracket so we're gonna have a little fun this time in
[00:00:39] celebration of spooky season and with me of course on this journey again it's Mari. Mari, welcome back.
[00:00:46] Yes, spooky season but most importantly Black spooky season is upon us.
[00:00:54] It's weird because it's like we're technically almost halfway through, halfway through October
[00:01:00] like what? What is happening? It's flying by so fast, so, so fast. I feel like we didn't even give
[00:01:09] time to really talk about Black horror the way we're shooting in October. I wanted to have like
[00:01:14] different podcasts, talking about different movies and stuff like that but I mean we have
[00:01:19] we look up. We don't have so much time, yeah. We look up half the month that's gone like what?
[00:01:24] Exactly. So today this is a, I will give Mari credit for this idea. This is Mari idea. We're gonna do a
[00:01:31] very special episode here where we come in and we are going to get our genuine reactions to what I found
[00:01:36] on the internet as the 25 essential Black horror movies uh as uh per uh an editorial on Rotten Tomatoes.
[00:01:45] And so uh as we know Rotten Tomatoes sometimes be hosing uh you know people sometimes tank Black films,
[00:01:53] you know they you know the critics don't get it because it's not for them sometimes. And so people say
[00:01:58] these movies are bad or they they didn't hit right. So we're gonna give our reactions to the list,
[00:02:03] talk about the ones we've seen, the ones we should probably watch, and then of course leave the
[00:02:07] comments open for you all to let us know what your favorite Black horror movie is, how you felt about
[00:02:12] them, which one of our opinions is wrong. Get active, get in the comments youtube.com slash at recap kickback
[00:02:17] to let us know what you think about our reactions here. If you're watching this on YouTube, welcome.
[00:02:22] Thank you for the conversation. We would love to see your feedback here. You can also email us
[00:02:26] recapkickback at gmail.com and let us know about these 25 essential Black horror movies and what
[00:02:31] Black horror movie we might be sleeping on that needs to be on this list. You good with that Mari?
[00:02:35] Yeah I'm good with that. I almost wish we had like a little like a counter right here. Somebody,
[00:02:40] somebody, we have lots of post team. Put a counter right here, right there. How many uh of these movies
[00:02:47] we've actually seen? Oh god yeah. Let's see if we can keep track. I have a feeling like I wasn't a big
[00:02:53] movie guy growing up so I have a feeling that some of these I miss. I love a lot of TV but movies
[00:02:57] sometimes evade me so I'm very excited to see what happens here. Yeah me too. I we I we have I don't
[00:03:03] know we don't know what the list is so we're like this is not looking for the list. Yeah all right so uh
[00:03:09] Mari is as Blackula today and I am Jimmy Bones so let's see if either of those movies pop up.
[00:03:15] Yeah um as a skinny guy I relate to that so uh I remember seeing that in theaters. Amazing. Oh yeah?
[00:03:24] I had it on DVD. Is that embarrassing? Should I be embarrassed about that? I love Bones. I'm sorry.
[00:03:29] I do. Bones is so good. Yeah I'm great. Yeah yeah they don't talk about it enough. Okay so here's our list.
[00:03:36] The Essential Black War movie. Uh what? Look go. Oh I guess at at number 25 Jimmy Bones we got Bones.
[00:03:46] Um critics consensus slow to start the sleek looking Bones is more silly than scary. Um I feel
[00:03:53] like we're going against the critics. I love this movie Mari. I'm sorry. Yeah when I tell you I we
[00:03:59] we snuck into the theater to watch this. Yes. I remember me and my bestie we was in there we was
[00:04:07] kicking it up. We were like why is the blood orange? This is amazing.
[00:04:12] Yes um it says uh synopsis Jimmy Bones is a legendary protector and patron of the thriving neighborhood.
[00:04:18] Cool handsome and respected uh more. Oh it's gonna take us away from the page. Shouldn't have clicked more.
[00:04:24] All right uh but yeah just know that Bones is a movie about a demon. Yeah but we've seen it.
[00:04:31] We like it. I'm sorry I haven't seen the rest of the list but I'm gonna argue that this is probably
[00:04:35] too low Mari. What do you think? I agree like I yeah that's what I was about to say. I said zoom in and
[00:04:40] then we can yeah this is great. Um I love this. I don't know what the rest of the 25 are but I can I
[00:04:46] can see why it's a little low because it is kind of like it's not as scary. It's it to me it it
[00:04:53] kind of come off as horror comedy but I don't think it meant to but it's still so classic and
[00:04:59] so good like Snoop Dogg killed it. Like it was good. That's my boy. I was I love this movie and I was
[00:05:05] also afraid of this movie at the same time. Like it's funny it wasn't scary but we were so young to
[00:05:11] where it is. No justice for bones. Next number 24 Tales from the Crypt presents Demon Knight.
[00:05:19] Right now Mari I remember Tales from the Crypt but I don't remember this specific iteration of
[00:05:25] Tales from the Crypt. You? No I actually did not like watching the Tales from the Crypt. Uh the
[00:05:30] Crypt Keeper scares the absolute shit out of me. Um not anymore but this this does not ring a bell for
[00:05:37] me at all. Yeah um synopsis here. Ex-soldier Frank uh Breaker is the guardian of an ancient key that can
[00:05:44] unlock tremendous evil. The sinister but charming collector Billy Zane is a dim a demon who wants
[00:05:50] the key so he can initiate the apocalypse. On the run from the wicked mercenaries for almost 90 years,
[00:05:56] Breaker finally stops in at a boarding house in New Mexico where with the help of his quirky residents
[00:06:00] he faces off against the collector and his band of ghouls preventing them from ever seizing the key.
[00:06:06] It's a lot going on there, Mari. Is that a synopsis or is that the whole movie? Uh I don't know. I mean I
[00:06:10] guess he's got to go up against the collector and we'll have to see what happens from there but I've
[00:06:14] never seen it, Mari. Should we be putting this on our to-do list? Should we be watching this this
[00:06:18] eventually? Let's ask the audience tell us what you think. Ernest R Dickerson did both of those too.
[00:06:24] Very interesting. Yeah yeah yeah he's yes so Tales from the Crypt uh Demon Knight 1995. We'll say we
[00:06:31] have not watched it. How about that? Have not watched. I'm keeping a spreadsheet now.
[00:06:35] All right cool. Next on our list at number 23, Tales from the Hood. Oh my god this this is getting
[00:06:44] ridiculous at this point you know. The original. The original so I like of course there's Tales
[00:06:50] from the Crypt with the Crypt Keeper but then you have Tales from the Hood and I just remember being
[00:06:55] terrified of this uh this movie because I was way too young to be watching it. It was on uh and I
[00:07:01] remember watching my my older cousins watching it and I was like okay this is not for me. This
[00:07:05] is scary as hell but I cannot tell you what the plot of Tales from the Hood is. That's what I was
[00:07:09] just about to say. I was like I remember I watched it. I remember having a reaction to it but I cannot
[00:07:13] I do not know what it was about. I think we're gonna have to put that one on our to-do list.
[00:07:18] We might have to. Yeah oh you know what I remember from Tales from the Hood?
[00:07:22] Nigglets. I used to call people I've used to call people nigglets for so long and I think it's from
[00:07:28] Tales from the Hood. The little dolls? Yeah I think that's what they call them. The little slave dolls.
[00:07:33] Yeah the nigglets. I'm there we're here. That's all I remember was the little slave dolls. I was like
[00:07:40] what is happening right now? It's not technically a slur but it does feel like one. We'll put Tales from
[00:07:46] on the Hood from the uh on the to-do list. We might need to. I feel like that's a classic.
[00:07:51] Yeah that's what I'm saying. We kind of need to have that knowledge here. Yeah. Number 22 Mari.
[00:07:56] It's Blackula. Blackula. Yes. I'm pretty sure I've only seen this like once. Yeah but you said you were
[00:08:03] afraid of Blackula right? Not Blackula. No no no no. Um but like I don't know. I I'm sure I've only
[00:08:10] seen it once and then it was like because of the the blaxploitation of it all. Yeah. I don't think I
[00:08:15] really like liked it. I just like the name Blackula. Blackula is such a good name. It really is. It is.
[00:08:21] From 1972 so I actually don't think I've ever seen Blackula. Um I just have known it forever and
[00:08:28] it's I so yeah the original 1972 Blackula number 22. Bloodsucker. That's great. Yeah. I'm gonna get you bloodsucker.
[00:08:37] All right. Next up number 21 we have Blade. Now does Blade count as a horror movie? I don't know.
[00:08:47] It's definitely a comic book movie. I don't know if I'll give it horror movie. Well there are vampires
[00:08:55] and you are a vampire expert. Yes sir. So you know is it vampirey enough to where it fits into spooky
[00:09:01] season at the very least? I mean yeah I mean we be stretching the season and is Die Hard a Christmas
[00:09:09] movie? Is Nightmare Before Christmas? Yeah. Yeah you know so yeah it's just definitely a Halloween movie.
[00:09:16] I don't know. It's good though. Blade is good though. We like Blade. We like Blade. We do. Blade is great.
[00:09:22] Shout out to Wesley Snipes. But and also shame on you MCU. We know you're never gonna give us that blade.
[00:09:27] I know. Stop playing in our face. Stop playing in our face. I know. I'm gonna be a I'm gonna have grandchildren by the time the next
[00:09:31] Blade come out. Yeah and it's gonna piss me off. Okay so next up number 20. Ma get home safe you know.
[00:09:41] Yes did you watch this? I did watch Ma. I loved it. Yeah it's a thriller. It counts. I love the new wave.
[00:09:49] It's a part of that new wave of black horror like but it didn't feel like it was trying to like because
[00:09:55] sometimes like after Get Out it felt like a lot of people were trying to do Get Out do Get Out and
[00:10:01] this didn't feel like that. I liked it. Yeah yeah it was weird. It didn't make any sense but I liked it.
[00:10:06] Very weird. Very weird. She did her thing though. She really did uh and we got some good gifs from Ma too.
[00:10:14] That one where she's sitting behind the like behind the wall kind of like yeah like yeah yeah yeah
[00:10:18] yeah that's a good one. Okay uh number 19. That's that's a hard to suggest if you haven't seen it.
[00:10:26] Oh yeah yes go watch Ma please go watch Ma. JD's Revenge 1976. Have you even heard of this? No I've
[00:10:34] never heard of this. Yeah so it's got my boy Lou Gossett Jr. uh check out the uh the whole
[00:10:40] I did a whole tribute to Lou Gossett Jr. here on Recap Kickback. It's a it's a short yeah so shout
[00:10:44] out to my guy um Glenn Turman's here um I have never heard of this before. I've never heard of this.
[00:10:51] Yeah uh I think we got to put this on the list. It made it up to number 19 and we don't even know
[00:10:55] what it is. I think we got to kind of watch it maybe not for Recap Kickback just but just that have
[00:11:00] that on our reading list you know something that we can go to. Um quick synopsis notorious gangster
[00:11:05] JD Walker is shot and killed in the 40s. His spirit remains restless for three decades until
[00:11:10] the hypnotist supernatural nightclub act allows him to take over the body of Isaac who's played
[00:11:15] by Glenn Turman uh a mild mannered law student and after enabling uh well inhabiting Isaac
[00:11:20] uh Walker decides to hunt down Reverend Elijah Bliss played by Lou Gossett Jr. a former criminal
[00:11:26] who uh helped the authorities find and assassinate the mobster years ago so sounds interesting.
[00:11:33] I'll check it out. Yeah that sounds like that'd be really good for like a remake too.
[00:11:37] Yeah yeah it's time. JD's Revenge has been it's been uh a few decades it's time bring back
[00:11:42] JD's Revenge. Like cause like a lot of white like horror movies they remake over and over and over
[00:11:48] again. Oh yes yes how many Texas Chainsaw Massacres have there been? I Spit on Your Grave there's like
[00:11:53] 80 million. Yeah yeah. Last House on the Left. Mm-hmm. So many. Yeah okay that's number 19.
[00:12:01] Number 18. Black Box. Mark why do I feel like you've seen this? I have seen this okay this is the
[00:12:09] one this is the one where um like Hulu was doing like like like quick shot horror movies like they
[00:12:19] were releasing a horror movie once every week and I think it's Felicia Rashad in this yeah. She is yeah.
[00:12:25] I remember this this there's a like a twist ending that I don't want to give away if you haven't watched
[00:12:30] it but I liked it I thought it was pretty decent I thought it was good for like a thriller like
[00:12:35] you're trying to figure out what's going on. Yeah after losing his wife in memory in a car accident
[00:12:39] a single father undergoes an agonizing experimental treatment that causes him to question who he really
[00:12:43] is. I've never seen it but Mari seems to recommend it. I liked it I liked it I liked it yeah.
[00:12:49] Okay okay we'll see what happens uh shout out to Felicia Rashad of course obviously um look at this
[00:12:56] Blade 2 coming in higher than Blade 1. Blade 2 coming in at number 17. How do you feel about that first
[00:13:01] of all? Do you think Blade 2 is better than Blade 1? No and what scares me is we haven't seen Blade 3 yet.
[00:13:07] Okay Blade 3 is not going to be on this list stop it. It better not be. It better not be. I mean yeah I
[00:13:14] I love all the Blades but like the original is really hard to top up. Yeah well it's up here at
[00:13:21] number 17 I argue probably a little too high especially because I think Blade 1 is probably
[00:13:25] better but Blade 1 and 2 are both good. Blade 3 is so good. Talk about it it's not great but I love it
[00:13:30] I still like it. I like yeah Blade 3 is like uh very funny to me. Yeah it's funny it's like straight
[00:13:37] like bad movies you can like bad movies it's okay I love bad movies I don't know why people get so
[00:13:42] defensive over liking bad movies they like I like you don't like them like it is so it doesn't have
[00:13:46] to be good for you to enjoy it just enjoy it. I love it. More Blade rolling down Sweetheart 2019.
[00:13:56] I've never heard of this. I've seen this. Oh okay. Hmm? A shipwreck survivor? Oh no did we see this?
[00:14:07] I think we started to watch this and then okay didn't get to finish it. Yeah Emory Cohen,
[00:14:15] Kiersey Clemons. Yeah. I've never heard of this. A shipwreck survivor of it on an inhabited island
[00:14:21] must fend off a malevolent force that surfaces each night. Very vague. I'm gonna ask James if we
[00:14:27] if we finish this because I remember we started it. I remember we started it. It was uh like um
[00:14:33] we started during the pandemic. Yeah okay so this is 93% on the tomato meter certified fresh.
[00:14:41] So uh we gotta watch it. We gotta watch it. It sounds like it's good you know um and 93%
[00:14:47] coming in at number 16 that gives me high hopes for what's coming next. Let us know if y'all seen that.
[00:14:51] Yeah. People under the stairs. This is a classic. Definitely. Classic. So good.
[00:14:59] When I was in the book I was afraid of this. Yes based on the book. I remember uh I remember
[00:15:04] coming across the movie first and then when I got older coming across the book and being like
[00:15:08] I'm not reading that. That's crazy. And did I do a remake of People under stairs? I don't know why
[00:15:13] I feel like they did a remake. Yeah I'm pretty sure there was um and if there hasn't been then they
[00:15:18] definitely should have um because why not you know it's it's so scary and it's 1991. So it's
[00:15:24] it's been a long time. Oh I saw two months ago that's what it was. Two months ago I saw like a post
[00:15:29] about Jordan Peele. Jordan Peele's Monkey Paw production. Ah.
[00:15:34] Making a remake. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
[00:15:41] Gentrify this Wes Craven nonsense okay. Let's blacken it up. Wes Craven is pretty decent.
[00:15:46] And he's great but also let's gentrify it. All right next up. Make it blacker. Yeah make it blacker.
[00:15:53] Uh next one death by temptation. Now this looks interesting. Is this a hip-hop?
[00:15:58] I have no idea what that is. Is this a hip-hop horror story? Yes.
[00:16:04] A divinity student. Yes we love this. Um I have no idea. I have never heard of this.
[00:16:12] A quiet divinity student from North Carolina starts to question his fate so he heads to New York to visit
[00:16:18] his friend Kadeem Hardison a struggling actor who takes him out bar hopping. Um wait it is Kadeem
[00:16:24] Hardison playing himself? No uh that just his name is K in the movie. Oh okay. It's pretty much Kadeem
[00:16:29] Hardison. Um yeah and then they they meet a seductress who turns out to be a succubus and a demon spirit
[00:16:35] lurking. Okay all right. Oh you might have my attention. Yeah. Yeah okay. Okay I think we
[00:16:43] could check this back. Yeah that's pretty interesting. I'm very excited about that. Also it almost sounded
[00:16:49] familiar when you yeah I was just thinking that too. I was like shout out to him. He was popping up.
[00:16:54] Also also the title Death by Temptation. D-E-F. Bruh. That's black as hell. Black as hell.
[00:17:03] They wrong for that. No I love it. I love it. Black it up. All right next up. The Zombies of Sugar Hill.
[00:17:11] 1974. Mari I didn't realize there was so much horror blaxploitation out. Me neither. I have no
[00:17:17] idea what this is. I wasn't familiar with your work blaxploitation. Um nightclub owner refuses to sell
[00:17:25] out to the local mob boss. He's beaten to death by a gang of hired thugs. His fiance vows revenge for
[00:17:31] his murder and turns to aged voodoo authority mama matrice. Yeah we like we like to I like I like the
[00:17:38] voodoo stuff. I don't touch it. I like to watch other people do that kind of stuff. Um yeah they
[00:17:42] they conjure demonic spirit. Uh yeah a bunch of zombies. This sounds like fun. I also don't know
[00:17:48] how I've never seen this. Never heard of it. Nothing. Never heard of it. Sounds fun. Yeah it's
[00:17:54] pretty hot on the list. 13 is not bad. Gotta check it out. All right. Number 12. Vampire in Brooklyn.
[00:18:02] Hey. Get the hell out of me. Seen it. I seen it in I synced it in in theaters. My my tt snuck me
[00:18:12] into this. Yes. Very very inappropriate uh movie for kids. Loved it though. You know what I was saying
[00:18:21] earlier about how um you know Rotten Tomatoes uh ratings and stuff like normally don't match the
[00:18:27] when it comes to black folks at least it really always don't match our uh like audience reception.
[00:18:31] Uh get this. Tomato meter for Vampire in Brooklyn. 11 percent. Yeah 31 percent for the popcorn meter
[00:18:39] and I'm just like what are we doing? What are we doing? Y'all I really just
[00:18:43] I love Vampire in Brooklyn. It's Andrew Bastet and Eddie Murphy y'all. I know.
[00:18:47] What are we doing? Look Kadeem Hardison again. Yes. King. Alan Payne too. This is a star
[00:18:53] of the castle. Shout out to Wes Craven. Look at him. I love Vampire in Brooklyn. Yeah me too.
[00:19:00] I feel like we gotta talk about that. Tyrone loves Eddie Murphy. We have to get him on.
[00:19:04] Uh definitely. All right next up. Number 11 Candyman. Hey. Capriti Green's own. The original.
[00:19:14] The original. The OG. Did you watch the remake? Oh yeah. I watched it. Yeah. I watch every Candyman.
[00:19:19] We watched uh this one in school. Um in school? Like like not school. That class like my friend
[00:19:28] Oh we we revisited when we were in college and I was like I it hit so much different once you like
[00:19:34] realize the allegory and all that. Yeah so I remember the first time I saw Candyman I was little. I
[00:19:41] probably was in kindergarten and I was over at a friend's house uh my mom was like friends with uh
[00:19:47] with their mom so it was like me and like him and his sibling you know and so they were like oh
[00:19:52] y'all go in the room and play and we're gonna watch a movie and so he was like let's go see what they
[00:19:56] watch and so we're like crawling behind the couch trying to see what the old folks is watching and all
[00:20:01] I remember is just like this uh bathroom stall door opening and just bees coming out the toilet and I
[00:20:07] just like I screamed and everyone was like why did we tell you to get your ass back in that room so
[00:20:14] yeah Candyman oh man I gotta catch I never made I never watched the remake so I never seen any of
[00:20:20] the recent ones. I like the remake I know why some people did it. Do not. Gotcha. We can talk about
[00:20:27] it later uh next up Beloved. Now this to me this didn't really feel like a spooky season movie but
[00:20:33] it's because in my household people was watching this all the time like I remember I think we had
[00:20:37] this on DVD. I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't like Beloved. I don't I only remember the scene at the
[00:20:45] end with she naked and yelling and I just it burns it burns yeah I was like oh my god and she was
[00:20:52] very very hairy it was a sign of the times um yeah moving on Danny Glover uh Oprah Winfrey uh
[00:21:02] Tandy Newton and I believe her first role that ever hit the scenes really and then Kimberly Elise
[00:21:06] who will uh you know this is black royalty and then Tandy Newton's there too. All right next up
[00:21:13] Eve's Bayou. Is that a scary movie? It's not not scary. I will say this there's a lot of voodoo
[00:21:20] there's some death there's a witchcraft in there as well. I don't I don't think it's about that though
[00:21:26] you know Eve's Bayou people talk about it all the time about first of all TikTok has been like
[00:21:30] messing up their uh evaluations of Eve's Bayou there's all these think pieces about how it how
[00:21:36] it happened and I'm like y'all didn't watch did y'all not watch this um I gotta read it it's been so
[00:21:41] long it's been so long since I've seen Eve's Bayou. I love Eve's Bayou uh I remember watching
[00:21:46] it when I was little when we went to New Orleans last year Mari I was like oh Eve's Bayou
[00:21:52] yes check it out Lynn Wilfield Samuel L. Jackson Debbie Morgan yeah I just don't know if it's a
[00:21:58] scary movie classic though yeah I don't think it's a horror movie but it's definitely like a thriller
[00:22:02] you know um in uh Journey Smollett also in there I think that's where she gets her start
[00:22:06] all right um or at least yeah uh number eight the boy behind the door Mari I don't know what this is
[00:22:14] I have no idea what this is 2020 2020 oh this is recent okay we gotta watch this is it streaming or
[00:22:23] something like why is it why did it come out 2020 I know there were no no uh no uh like uh
[00:22:30] previews or nothing like that it couldn't have been in theaters it had to be streaming yeah oh
[00:22:35] I think it's on Apple TV plus so um yeah we have to check it out 2020
[00:22:41] 97 percent on the tomato media uh so yeah we'll have to check that out starring Lonnie Chavis uh Ezra
[00:22:48] Dewey Kristen Bauer and Scott Michael Foster all right next up number seven Ganja and Hess I've heard
[00:22:56] of this I didn't know it was a scary movie I didn't either yeah this is 1973 this is another one of those
[00:23:05] movies where I'm pretty sure oh Mari I think we talked we they talked about it in the um the the
[00:23:11] Hollywood black Hollywood black that's what yeah I think that's what it is yeah germs from the
[00:23:17] stash the ancient dagger turned two lovers into immortal vampires Mari this is right up your alley
[00:23:22] this sounds amazing yeah hour and 50 minutes 93 percent uh coming in high in the rankings we'll have to put
[00:23:31] on our to-do list yeah next up his house 2020 tried to watch I heard this was scary as shit it's on
[00:23:43] netflix or at least it was it was never got a chance they were like fixing up a house it was like
[00:23:49] african refugees or something like that I okay I kept like it was one of those things where we kept it on
[00:23:56] our list to watch and we kept watching like the trailer yeah which is never got a chance to watch it
[00:24:03] well a hundred percent I heard it was good I heard it was scary yeah uh it was on netflix and uh it has
[00:24:10] oh wumi masaka for masaku from um um lovecraft country and so I'm very excited uh I didn't know this
[00:24:19] existed yeah I want to check this out I hope it's now not looking me being I mean I hope it's not too
[00:24:25] scary yeah but anyway it's not too scary all right that's number six we've made it to the top five baby
[00:24:32] let's get into it that's number five candy man 2021 now yeah Mari 84 percent you've seen both the candy men
[00:24:41] yeah you've seen all the candy men uh-huh is Yahya Abdul-Mateen's version of the candy men
[00:24:48] is this a better is this a superior candy man I don't know I think it's better well laid out
[00:24:55] like I think it's I think it should I say it it really kind of just like beat you over the head
[00:25:03] with the uh it's not allegory it's like straight up like gentrification
[00:25:11] like it's very straight up so I think that's why that's why some people hated it and some people
[00:25:15] liked it but I really liked it I liked it yeah not they saying candy man too
[00:25:24] okay that that part once you watch it and you see the ending you'll you'll get it
[00:25:30] gotcha okay also cast is crazy Tiana Paris uh Coleman Domingo directed by Nia DaCosta yeah
[00:25:37] this is my type I don't know I just never watched it I don't know I guess it's because
[00:25:40] I had childhood wounds from that first uh candy man experience it was a tough kindergarten year
[00:25:45] all right number four attack of the block this is really good have you seen this never never heard
[00:25:53] of this John Boyega's in it he's like 13 in it or something like that or 16 it's good it's about
[00:26:02] like some neighborhood youth in London you know and what are I forget what estates on their estates
[00:26:08] okay and aliens attack London and they're like a gang of vicious vicious street boys and then they
[00:26:16] have to stop like committing crimes to like beat up aliens it's good okay like they try and protect
[00:26:23] their estate it's good it's really good okay I'm gonna zone my list now 91% on the tomato video
[00:26:28] number four uh the critics consensus effortlessly mixing scares laughs and social commentary oh okay
[00:26:34] you're gonna do a second one too at some point but I don't know if they did it's been a long time
[00:26:39] John Boyega gonna be a grown grown grown by the time they get to that um okay number three Mari
[00:26:46] us yes yeah yeah yeah yeah I love me some us I love us yeah I love that there are nothing
[00:26:55] theaters we did too yeah yeah yeah um it's Lupita it's Winston Duke what what else could you ask for
[00:27:03] Jordan Peele that twist at the end yeah and it was like the follow-up to um to get out almost in a way
[00:27:10] and so uh I think it kind of set the bar high for what Jordan Peele was doing with the with the uh
[00:27:15] you know these horror movies and yeah and even the music you know I think uh like was that I got
[00:27:21] five on it remix that was on uh yeah like oh okay yeah more of that more of that all right number two
[00:27:28] night of the living dead what was that black well remember it showed up in Hollywood black and I think
[00:27:34] we both were like I didn't I don't think I realized that was black yeah uh actually at the top of
[00:27:40] this uh article that first thing they talk about is the Hollywood black it actually says
[00:27:44] I mean I'm sorry uh it's a night of the living dead it says the movie was groundbreaking for setting
[00:27:49] zombie template but also through its casting of Dwayne Jones as his hero and every man of color he leads
[00:27:54] survivors through night up I'm sorry through night up until it's a provocative ending when director George
[00:28:00] A Romero inexplicably binds the horror genre to Americans uh dark living history so I think it's
[00:28:06] about like like the history like black slavery and all that stuff but also tied into yeah I think so
[00:28:12] it said America's dark history and in my mind that's you know slavery is the dark part of the
[00:28:19] American history you know as far as I'm concerned and so if they're trying to avoid that I think
[00:28:23] they're splicing together maybe zombies and slavery hmm yeah yeah um set the template for the zombie film
[00:28:31] so I guess I'll have to check this out also check out our uh our zombie kickback here on recap kickback
[00:28:37] where we're talking about uh the walking dead so yeah uh and then number one we know what number one is
[00:28:43] number one is definitely get out right has to be gotta be right okay let's find out number one get out
[00:28:54] 2017 yeah buddy yeah we did it we did it uh we both seen get out um I remember I remember watching
[00:29:03] this uh on my computer I was getting my oil changed and I was like they were like it's gonna be a couple
[00:29:08] hours I was like you know what I'm not going nowhere I'm gonna just sit here and watch it I watched it
[00:29:11] and I reacted like I was in the movie theater you know that you were robbed of the theater experience
[00:29:17] thing because the theater was jumping it was so good yeah I embarrassed myself because someone's
[00:29:23] like what are you doing I said oh child I seen the cops pull up I don't know I thought it was over
[00:29:28] that was the best part of the whole movie the cop pull up it jumps jumps out uh what's the name uh
[00:29:35] rail little rail rail rail little rail and the whole theater started clapping and yeah
[00:29:42] like oh my god get out is so good like it it literally like made people rethink horror like
[00:29:50] not just black horror horror in general it's just so good I like this list Chappelle what did you
[00:29:59] I like the list a lot I like the idea that one we have heard a lot of these film titles uh and but we
[00:30:05] also haven't watched a lot of them and so I think it gives us time to really dive in but I really want
[00:30:10] to know what our listeners think about what we've seen and what your experiences were because you don't
[00:30:14] have to like the same movies we like obviously and everybody's gonna rank their movies differently
[00:30:18] but Mari of the 25 is Get Out your number one horror movie definitely hands down yeah I think so too I
[00:30:26] think for me it would have been Get Out and then like just like based off of the nostalgia maybe Candyman
[00:30:30] the first one um because like I said I remember I can't I have that memory seared into my head of
[00:30:36] watching that beat them bees uh and so this is good I think this is a dope list Mari that was great
[00:30:42] yep uh I liked it I feel like I learned something we got to talk about uh really just show some love
[00:30:56] yeah any snubs anything you you were expecting to see that's not there no not really nothing uh
[00:31:04] I can't think of anything either I mean it's not like we have a lot of videos I can I can think of
[00:31:10] black horror movies but I I know why they're not nothing that should have cracked the list yeah
[00:31:15] okay good to know I think that this gave us something that we can look into in the future
[00:31:20] if anybody wants us wants to make any requests and tell us something that we didn't put on this list
[00:31:25] or that they didn't make the list that we should be watching let us know so we can check it out and
[00:31:30] then maybe we can do a podcast about it or something like that we got time right
[00:31:35] plenty yeah plenty of time and so uh give us your feedback right here in the youtube comments and
[00:31:40] then make sure you email us and let us know it's the spooky season's about done and so you got a
