[00:00:22] Hey, what's up fam? Welcome back again to Recap Kickback. This time for a very special occasion, Mari and I are going to take a blast to the past all the way to the 1990s to talk about the newest iteration in the Snowfall Saga, The Drop colon A Snowfall Saga. Episode 1 is out and Mari and I are back to talk about it. If you are an early listener of me and Mari's content together, you will know that we talked about Snowfall

[00:00:51] almost in its entirety. You know, we caught the last couple of seasons of it, got to do four recaps of those episodes and we really enjoyed it. And so, of course, we would be crazy to not talk about Snowfall, The Drop or, you know, I'm gonna call this thing anything under the sun this season, Mari, but it's Snowfall. It's back. I mean, as long as you didn't add an S to it, so it's fine, you know, the Drops. Snowfall. Yeah. Yeah. Snowfall. Oh my God.

[00:01:19] I'm so glad to be back in the Snowfall universe. I mean, what an utterly Blackie Black Black show that also is just like universal in like how it makes you feel. The character writing is so good. Like just from the first episode, like I'm hooked. I'm in. I can't wait to see where this goes. I trust everybody who's making this show.

[00:01:48] Like, if you are, if you are here and you're like, oh, I just stumbled upon this. I've never heard of Snowfall. Go back and watch Snowfall while you wait for the second episode of The Drop and then come along this ride with us because we are actually here at the beginning. You know? Yeah. We back in the day, we used to just jump in because we were only given about two or three seasons of any given show to talk about before it got canceled. And so we actually jumped in on Snowfall toward the end of it.

[00:02:16] And so we caught, you know, the majority of it for sure. But you all definitely have the opportunity to go catch up on an amazing show. If you haven't already seen it, you don't necessarily have to have seen it to watch this first episode. So, but maybe later on in this eight episode season, Mari, it might be more important to know a little bit more of the backstory. But I'm sure we'll talk about it here. Yeah, I'm sure we will. Honestly, recommending Snowfall, that is a, like a labor of love.

[00:02:43] Like, you don't need, I don't think you'll need to know as of right now, like what happened. But if you like this first episode of The Drop, then you will love all five seasons of Snowfall, I believe it is. Like, we covered the last, well, I think we covered season four and five. I think six seasons total, Mari, if I'm not mistaken. Was it six? Okay, so then we covered season five and six. I think we only covered the last two seasons or something like that, or the last season. Emphasodically, yeah.

[00:03:13] I know we did like a full series review, but we only did episodic reviews for those last two seasons, you're right. Yes, yeah. Six seasons, oh my God, so good. So good. So good. Yeah. So, here's my thing. I guess for the people who have not seen Snowfall, that are just jumping in here, Mari, how can you sum up Snowfall, the original series,

[00:03:40] and kind of like a quick little elevator pitch for the people who are listening to us, but have not necessarily gone back and watched it. So, Snowfall follows Franklin Saint as he is like a kid from LA who ends up going down the path of selling crack cocaine rock. Like, this is like when the crack epidemic first starts. Like, this is actually, Snowfall was a window into the crack epidemic.

[00:04:11] And it's basically following Franklin and then his friends Leon, and like just about the culture, like the gang culture, the effect that crack had on the community in 1980s LA. Franklin along the way gets mixed up with crooked CIA agents, drug kingpins, you name it, as he rises to like the top of LA's drug empire.

[00:04:38] And it was so, it's just such good writing. It's such good storytelling. It truly is prestige television. Like this is Snowfall and here the drop two is stuff that you could watch on HBO. I hate to just be like, it's like the wire because it's not, it's two different shows in two different locations, but it's still that type of really in-depth, really good writing where storylines intersect each other.

[00:05:07] And, and the characters are very well thought out and maintained. And basically it's one of those things where it's like, is there a good character? You know what I'm saying? Everybody's morally gray. So yeah, Snowfall is, is an amazing show, amazing show. And we are so lucky that we get a continuation of that world here with the drop. Yeah. A lot of the characters in Snowfall were, or the stories that they were telling in Snowfall were based on real events.

[00:05:34] You know, the CIA involvement in the drug trade, you know, Franklin say almost like an avatar to freeway Ricky Ross, you know, so things like that were happening there. And so I was definitely excited to see that when we found out that the drop was happening, it was going to be following some of the characters that we know, the surviving characters really. And, you know, some very new characters in a, in a new storyline.

[00:05:57] So where Snowfall was really talking about what it was like to be a drug kingpin back in the, in the eighties, when the crack epidemic was destroying the black community in a lot of ways. So, um, we're now in the nineties and we are following one of the characters that survived Snowfall. Uh, uh, Wanda, uh, played by the actress, Gail Bean, big Gail Bean fans. Shout out to her. Shout out. Shout out to the podcast. Friend of the podcast. Yeah. She don't know it, but she is. Um, but yeah, friend of the podcast, Gail Bean is back as Wanda.

[00:06:27] We will see Leon as well in this series. And we're really going to follow Wanda's, um, journey into a different game. This is going to be the rap game. Uh, Wanda is clearly very involved in trying to turn her life around and go from the, the one that we knew in Snowfall, which was marred by drug addiction and things of that nature. Uh, and so now she's back and she's going a different route. You know, she doesn't want to be a product of this community that she's a part of.

[00:06:56] She has big dreams. You see her hustling, working another job as a, like at a used car salesman place and then, uh, you car dealership. I mean, and then she's detailing cars as well, but ultimately she's like, oh, she's going like a baby A&R. You know, she's really trying to find the next big artists to put them on. She's got an ear for the music and she's thinking that music might be her way out into, into just finding some greatness amongst all the dreariness in her community. Yeah.

[00:07:25] Yeah. So we're going from the eighties, the crack epidemic eighties to the early nineties, specifically 1990 in LA where people are parlaying. Parlaying sounds so like, so cool, but it's like people, I know it's so it's, it's people are realizing like, this is the, this will be the rise. We'll get to see the rise of gangster rap, like West coast gangster rap and how they take real experiences from the streets to then rap about it to the masses.

[00:07:53] Like it's so amazing because we're seeing two cultural touch points with the crack epidemic. And then the rise of gangster rap it's, it's two cultural touch points that if you're just being told like, oh, one series is about, is about drugs to others about music. You'd be like, well, how does that even make sense?

[00:08:16] But culturally knowing that literally one influences the other and that we're going to see exactly how that is. It's so great. Like it's, it's just amazing. And I really cannot wait for this journey. Like initially I was like, huh? It's about music. And then I just watching this episode, I immediately was like, yes, this makes so much sense.

[00:08:41] It doesn't feel like a weird cash grab to like, just cling on to the snowfall legacy. It literally makes sense as the next step. Yeah. These things are definitely intertwined. You know, we will hear a lot of gangster rap really referring to what it's like in the streets, but also the drugs as well. And so, you know, it brings the, it begs the question, you know, is it Wanda someone who we know kind of survived the drug game in a way? In a way, is she careening toward disaster?

[00:09:09] Because we know that these things might not be something that you can separate right gangster rap, kind of these, the gang communities around they're selling these drugs still, you know, it's not just because Franklin is gone doesn't mean the drugs are all gone. And so it's very scary to think about what could happen to Wanda if she gets too in too deep with the music and with the gangster rap. But I'm very excited to see what happens.

[00:09:34] I'm also wondering, Mari, if we're going to get any other kind of like parallel storylines with real events where they're alluding to real people, because we saw that a few times in the regular snowfall, right? Where it was very clear who they were talking about. Like what happens when we get like the fake Dr. Dre, you know what I'm saying? Or something like that. Yeah. This is 1990. So what's that a year after straight, a year after straight out of Compton dropped. And so, you know, they had easy on that magazine that that Wanda was looking at. Yeah.

[00:10:03] And they already made a reference to the Rodney King beating. Which is crazy because I think that happened in 91. Yeah. I was thinking that sounds like that seems a little early, but sure. But yeah, I wasn't I wasn't sure. So because it was like a little montage while they were listening to music. So it might have been just like a like a over like a montage over this, the over the background, not necessarily a reference in the show. Exactly. Yeah.

[00:10:33] Okay. I was like, I was like, look, I'm not I don't claim to be a historian, but I remember when Rodney King got his ass beat. All right. So, Mari, that's it. The episode really starts and we get to see Wanda in her new kind of like her new life that she's living. She seems like she's happy. We saw toward the end of snowfall. She did get cleaned up. Her and Leon moved to Africa. And then they came back and they saw, you know, what the how Africa was thriving. And then they came back and saw what the community looked like.

[00:11:02] And then, you know, you could tell that they were dejected a little bit by what they were seeing. But Wanda seems to be doing great now. She seems like she's surrounded by family. And initially we don't see Leon. Mari, were you surprised to find out that Leon and Wanda, they didn't make it? They didn't they didn't stay together? No, because like they said, they break up and get back together so often. Like we we know they don't broke up. Like I broke up for us. I played. Exactly. I was like, oh, OK, they're not together right now. Sure.

[00:11:33] I didn't even. I didn't even got an eyelash at that. I was like, OK. All right. Sure. Like Leon. Leon would not let that girl go when she was like at her lowest. He he's not going anywhere. I'm sorry. It's they're just going to keep doing this until they both just sit down, shut up and and and stay connected with each other. Yeah, that's a good point. Right. He was there when she was going through, you know, her her addiction.

[00:11:59] And if he didn't leave through that, I'm sure her, you know, visions of grandeur when it comes to the music game isn't going to run them off. I think from the scenes that we see with Leon and Wanda, to me, it comes off like he's afraid for her. You know, he's like, I love you. And although we're not working out, I don't really want you to go down a path that will lead you back to the Wanda that we knew in Snowfall. So I get where it's completely understandable what he's thinking. But she makes a really good point in this episode, Mara.

[00:12:26] She says to Leon, like, how are y'all going to tell us the community not to try to dream big, not to try to go after what we want, because it's dangerous. But it's dangerous due to the actions of you and Franklin and all your gangsta homies around here. OK, y'all made it like this. So how dare you tell us that? Oh, it's too it's not safe. Whose fault is it for not being safe, Leon? Exactly. Like it.

[00:12:53] It is interesting because she's she's clean now at the end of Snowfall. We saw when they came back that they both wanted to make a difference. I think she was working in like that that like shelter clinic thing that that Franklin's dad had set up. Right. Frank Franklin's dad or mom had set up. And then then Leon is like working at a legal clinic. And she's right.

[00:13:21] Like every time her and we'll get into her family, they want to do something other than just gangbang or go to church. People are like, no, no, no, you just stay here. Stay at your level. Just keep your head down. What is it? Just keep your head down. Try not to get shot and try to like live day to day. And it's like, no, I want to be exceptional. She clearly has like an ear for music and talent.

[00:13:50] And I love that it's kind of like she's helping discover that L.A. sound. I think is what this is kind of getting at. Oh, yeah, for sure. Her cousin Lamar is like 19 years old, but he too has an ear for music. And it seems like, you know, producing is kind of in his wheelhouse. We see him going into basically like a little trance every time he's listening to music. He's in it, you know, really trying to analyze it.

[00:14:19] And we see that, you know, Wanda goes to him at one point and asks him to make a sample for her out of a record. So the kid knows what he's doing. But you're right. His grandparents, Mama G and Big Daddy, they don't want him to try anything like that. Because, again, it's proximity to the gangster life is going to get you hurt. So they want him to instead go and play in the AME band at church. And, of course, he has no interest in doing that because that's not going to get him out of his situation.

[00:14:48] That's anything, like you said, it's just going to keep him out of the way. But when he has a gift that he should be nurturing, it's going to be impossible throughout this series for him to ignore it. Yeah, it's like it's really interesting because it's like, oh, they really want him to get this job in the AME band because it's kind of like in the hood in that situation. If you're a part of the church, you know, nine times out of ten, you know, you'll get left alone by all the gangsters and stuff like that.

[00:15:15] And I think that's where they're coming from when they keep telling him they want him to commit and take that job. But he's just he he knows again, it's kind of like how we start off with Snowfall with Franklin. Franklin was set to go to college. We find out something, you know, happened and he always knew that he was smarter and better. He felt like he was smarter and better than the people around him. And he wanted to do something else.

[00:15:43] Now, his something else, again, led to the downfall of his community. Hopefully, Lamar's is, you know, the giving voice to his community, you know, through music. Because you can still see the effects of Franklin throughout this episode. Like they show the montages of L.A. and it looks really cool. It can remind you of every black, you know, movies set in California that you've ever seen. But you have the good parts where it's the black people in the community jump roping and the kids and the church folks.

[00:16:11] And then you see the other side where the gangbanger homies are outside, you know, there the Crips, the Bloods, they're they're around and people getting beat up. There's still drugs, you know, being around. And so. Drive by. Drive by. Drive by. And so we're hoping that what Wanda and Lamar are going to do is going to like really better the community or at least get them out of this situation.

[00:16:34] So also living with Mama G and Big Daddy is Lamar's brother, James. Now, to me, it came off like James used to be in the streets pretty heavy, you know, potentially gang gang related for sure. But now he's trying to slow down. I think he's thinking about enlisting in the military. Was it, Mari? Yeah. Yeah. They're thinking about enlisting.

[00:16:58] I thought this kind of like unveiling of James was very, very interesting because we we get Wanda and Lamar like headed out and like they're talking about this music stuff. And then Wanda was like, well, you know, your brother's your brother is the thing. And you're just like, you didn't know what, you know, you like your brother's big. You just didn't know what he was big in. And Lamar's getting chased halfway around L.A.

[00:17:27] But, yeah, I was I'm still trying to figure out like I was trying to figure out where he currently stood, like if he was still banging or not. But he does say that he or Big Daddy did want him to go and get in, go enlist in the military, which, you know, me, military brat. I was like, go, go, go. But we know the moment that they say that there's an alternate plan for a character. We're not going to the military. We're not doing it.

[00:17:57] We're not doing it. It's not happening. It's not happening. Oh, no. Yeah. Yeah. I think he dropped the cuz at some point. So I was thinking maybe, yes, you know, you know, on that side of the gang wars. But he's out apparently and he's trying to stay on the straight and narrow as a good example to James. It does seem like we don't really know what the fate of their parents were, but they live with grandma and grandpa. That's not abnormal. But they have they they keep a tight ship over there. Okay.

[00:18:26] They don't they're not letting anybody lose. You know, we talk about Lamar, but he's 19. He's a grown ass man. He's not staying out late and going back to granny and papa house. That's not happening. And same thing with James. You got if you live in here, it's temporary because you got to go into the military and make something of yourself. We refuse to let you slide back into your hood ways.

[00:18:46] And so we're going to see, you know, what that balance really looks like as James does have to be almost like a true north at times for Lamar because Lamar is following his dreams. Even if it takes him to a side of town where he's not safe. When we saw him getting chased by basically every branch of the drug game and like every branch of the of the gangs, which is after him. And for no reason, just for existing being on the wrong side.

[00:19:16] Exactly. I was like, I looked down and I was like, wait, what am I missing? Like, I was like, I was like, oh, what did he do? Head. No, he was he was legit running for his life. I was like, oh, my God, what is happening? It was so good. I love that. I love that. Like chasing thing to really kind of just hammer home how you could not step past a certain point, you know, without being subject.

[00:19:46] You know, like, like it was rough back then, you know, and I, I, I really liked this. I really did. Yeah. And in a lot of places, it's still like that. You know, we will hear horror stories about how you went to somebody went to the wrong side of town and wearing the wrong colors and it didn't work out good for them. Now. Yeah. And you didn't check in. You got you got to check in at least if you hanging around those types of people, you got to check in.

[00:20:14] Now, this is bad, but he does survive, you know, I mean, with a little help from some luck, you know, a couple of the I think there was a wreck that happened that kind of gave him a little cover to get away. But then there's also the bus driver helped him out by letting him get off the bus and like locking the gang bangers on the bus as well. So he could take off running. So, yeah, the Crips were after him. He even, Mari, he even got away from the Crips into the convenience store only to see another Crip in the convenience store.

[00:20:44] I said, oh, you can't catch a break. Like, right. But then but I think but that Crip was like, okay, cool. Like, it was you are. Yeah. Like, legit. I was like, oh, my God, this is I can't wait till somebody breaks this down for me. You know, they're gonna have to have somebody that these 96 in the right. Don't go past here. And this is this. This is that set.

[00:21:09] And because I because, again, I was really trying to figure out who Jay like what James was a part of because he was wearing a lot of like tan and neutrals or whatever at first. So, yeah, I that was oh, that was so fun. He was booking it. He was running. And at the same time, they also had they had Kendrick Lamar playing. Yes. Mad City. Yeah. Perfect soundtrack for this exact this exact scene.

[00:21:37] And yeah, Lamar was leaving the record store. And while he was in the record store, I was really watching, you know, the way he was interacting with the music. I don't know if he's on the spectrum or what, but there's definitely a couple of moments where he zones out into the music. I think the guy inside the record store said, oh, I'm not with like you always doing that. He said the R word and said like that working whatever kind of vibe. Yeah. When he was in the car and James and his homeboys dropped picked him up.

[00:22:06] They also was like, oh, your robot is malfunctioning. So I don't really know what happens with Lamar. But there's definitely something there to explore because he's not going to be deterred by all of this. Right. Like he went over there to go to the record store because he's just that attractive to music. He's willing to risk his life for it. Yeah. Yeah. And he's good at it, you know, from what we've seen. So it's kind of like, I think you're right.

[00:22:33] Social cues are probably harder for him, but also you don't need to get social cues to understand. And gangs make it really easy for you to understand social cues colors. That's really easy for somebody to comprehend. So, yeah. Even when they pulled up on him at the bus stop, Mari, they like, where are you from? He just sitting there. I was like, hey, say something. Run. Do something.

[00:23:01] You know, when they started shooting, I saw the woman, that lady sitting next to him. She took off. She's like, I'm out of here. So, yeah. So I'm going to watch him a little bit closer just to see if that's a recurring thing where him kind of zoning out. Because it does look like when he's uncomfortable, he definitely went there. You know, James is in the car telling him, hey, you can't live like this. You need to grow up. It's time for you to go get that job with the church and leave this music stuff behind. It's going to lead you down a bad path or at least put you in harm's way.

[00:23:31] And when he's having that conversation, you see him just kind of like disassociate or something. You know, they're talking to him, but he's not even reacting. He's kind of looking straight ahead. What do you think about Asante in this role as Lamar? Love him. I really, like ever since when they see us, I was really like wondering why I felt like he hasn't been utilized more. Because that boy can act down.

[00:23:56] And his face is just so expressive too, you know. And I believe he's related to Samara Wiley, correct? If not, they look just alike. So he might as well start claiming. So if I remember correctly, there was hype about that. Yeah, that's her nephew, according to her nephew. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Also known as Poussey from Orange is the New Black for anybody out there I know.

[00:24:22] So I can't wait to watch him eat this role up because he is such a very good, like young actor. And I'm rooting for him hard. Yeah, this is my introduction to him because I did not watch. Oh, yeah. I didn't watch When They See Us. That's just not my kind of jam. I didn't watch This Is Us. And I didn't watch. He had me boo-hoo crying in When They See Us. Like boo-hoo. I can imagine.

[00:24:52] Yeah. Yeah. I seen the commercials and was like, no, thank you. But he was also in the most recent season of Euphoria, Mari. I don't think you kept up with Euphoria. Oh, I didn't. I, you know what? But we started it and then I didn't feel like waiting week to week. So I do have to finish it. I do have to finish it. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I don't. When you wait five years for something, I can wait another six months. Exactly.

[00:25:22] I don't need it. I don't need it. Yeah. So, yeah. Asante Black really shining in this role. I can't wait. Like I said, this is my first real experience with him. So I'm very excited to see kind of the acting choices that he makes. And I'm, you know, looking forward to seeing what Lamar does with all his little orange cassette tapes. Because he dropped a bunch of them when he was running from the thugs. I know. I really thought that, like, they were going to, like, pick them up and be like, oh. Find the music. This is cool. Yeah. This is that Lamar.

[00:25:53] Hey, put a little homie down, bro. You know? Exactly. I don't know why I thought music was going to heal gang wars. I mean, well. Well, I mean, we don't know where this is going. You know, that's the fascinating thing about Snowfall is that we knew where it was going to end. We knew the moment Franklin came into CIA, this was not a happy ending for anybody. I think some people took some pause with the way it ended. You know, like, Franklin should have said, hey, that's not realistic. Yeah, that's not realistic, y'all. You got to.

[00:26:23] Let's be clear. We still subverted our thoughts on the ending. We thought it was going to end up one of two ways, and they still found a third way that also made so much sense. Exactly. But we don't know where this is going. We don't know if this is going to lead to Lamar, you know, being some superstar producer or, you know, is the lifestyle that's surrounding him actually going to win? You know, I wouldn't necessarily say there was a happy ending in Snowfall, so I don't think you should come in believing that there would be a happy ending here. I agree.

[00:26:53] I completely agree. So let's talk about Wanda a little bit. So Wanda works at the used car dealership. She's detailing cars, but the whole time she's on the phone. She's kind of doing an internship with this producer named DG or this A&R named DG. Daryl. Daryl. Yeah. She's doing an internship with Daryl. And so she's still trying to wheel and deal while she's on the clock.

[00:27:18] You know, we see her detailing, but she's got the phone with a long cord, you know, dragging it around while she's doing it. And then we see what I would consider one of Wanda's superpowers so far in this episode is that Wanda has the gift of gab. She can talk you into anything if she wants to. When she leans in, it doesn't get any better. We see her selling a woman a car. And the woman's at first like, I got to wait for my man. She's like, no, no, just sit in the car.

[00:27:48] No, no, just put your lipstick on. Just look in the mirror. Okay. You see that? She pops in that cutie pop by one way. Like, you hear that? You hear how that feels? The woman's like, you know what? Fine. And she picks out the biggest stack of money in the world. Like here's $11,000. $11,000 in cash. I was like, y'all don't got no paperwork? Right. Right. And it was clean. It was like, I said, oh, okay. We know where that money came from. Um, that said, Mari, uh, her man does pull up.

[00:28:17] And at first he's like, okay, baby, I see the car. I like it. I love it. Okay. It's so clean. Who's who's who's the car dealer? Oh, oh, hey, Wanda. Yeah, baby. We're not going to be able to take this car. Um, Wanda's reputation as a former drug addict is going to be one of the obstacles that she's going to have to really battle with, um, in this season, because you can tell she might have left that life behind, but the, the reputation still lingers.

[00:28:47] This, like, this really like hurt my heart for her. Like truly hurt my heart because I was just like, yes, Wanda. Yes. And then for it to be like, oh, but she, you know, she used to be a crackhead. It's like, but look at her now. She's got it together. Like, it's so, it was so like, it was, it was so sad. And it's just one of those like kind of reminders that some people just can't let your mistakes

[00:29:13] go because what does that have to do with her with giving me the $11,000 for this really cool car? You know, like, uh, I felt, I felt for her so, so much in that, in that scene. I did feel for her. Comma butt. Oh, I ain't buying no car for no crackhead. Mario, no former crackhead. Because, because, because the moment something go wrong and you tell somebody what they're going to say, you bought it from who? Why would you buy a car from a former crackhead? Are you okay? And you're like, damn, you're right. I shouldn't have bought that car from them.

[00:29:44] Mario. She didn't pull up with it and hand it to you. It's from a dealership. Yes. I know that. I know that logically what you're saying is correct. But what I'm saying is that the moment you tell me, you know, that person used to be a crackhead. I'm starting to question everything. Are you still a crackhead? You know what I'm saying? Do you backslide every now and then? Is this car nice? Y'all don't believe in second chances. So y'all don't believe in second chances. I do. Y'all don't believe in second chances. Get your second chance. Just get it from somebody else. Not me. The worst.

[00:30:13] The worst. When he said it, because at first I was like, damn, that sucks, man. She didn't grow. She left that life behind. But also, she was moving wild in snowfall. That's all I'm going to say. And so I feel for Wanda. And I definitely can tell that this is going to be something that she has to keep dealing with. And it's not only the neighborhood that feels that way.

[00:30:38] When Wanda shows up to talk to her family sometimes, it even feels like, yeah, we don't quite trust you like we should or like we would if you didn't have a past addiction. Yeah. Yeah. Mama G was definitely like looking at her sideways. And it's just like, I really wonder how long she's been recovered, though. You know what I'm saying? Like, I get it.

[00:31:01] It's really hard to trust an addict because, you know, the addiction really takes over and they can not be themselves. But normally, the further you are away from it, like, the easier it is. But then there's relapsing, you know. And once you relapse and you have to. So it's hard, right? Because it's like that keep them at an arm's length because they've hurt you so many times before type of thing. But it's like, but you want them to do good. It's just rough, you know.

[00:31:31] And it's just rough when you're really trying to change and show that you've changed just for people to still treat you as if you are still, you know, addicted. This show really can be a vehicle to talk about the realness of addiction, right? Like, so how it affects the person who's addicted, but then the people around them. And then what it looks like when you try to come back from that. You know, it sounds as easy as go get clean. But are you ever really clean? I mean, you're an addict for life. You know, you're just a recovery addict.

[00:32:00] But at no point can you take your foot off the gas as far as your journey into sobriety. Wanda, throughout this episode, is even putting herself in a situation where she might be around people who use drugs. Okay, well, if that's the case, I would say that Wanda shouldn't be in those situations. You know, you don't ever want anybody to have to backslide. And we saw how quickly Wanda kind of hurtled into the addiction. It didn't take long. It wasn't like Wanda was struggling with it for seasons.

[00:32:30] So, very concerned at different points. And I'm, again, I'm not going to hold you. When I saw her climbing through that window, I said, she's back on it. She's taking it. You're so ridiculous. What do you think she was doing? Who else do you think she was breaking into? I don't know. I was confused. I was like, huh? What? I said, not again. Not again. I support women's rights and wrongs. Why? Why? She broke into Leon's house. She did.

[00:33:00] She did. Well, her old house with Leon. Yeah. His two dogs knew her. So, you know, and she's going through the house to find a record, a specific record. And Leon comes in and says, well, you almost got popped. You're lucky. You're lucky the dogs weren't barking because he had his gun out.

[00:33:26] And he did make that same comparison, Chappelle, that you were crawling through the windows like you did when you were on that stuff. I mean, I feel like it's valid because, again, don't start acting weird, you know? Now, don't get me wrong. I understand why she did it. Now, looking now that you know the nature of their relationship, because with her and him not really being on the same page, it's clear that he's kind of like, like you said, he ain't going nowhere. Whatever she wants, she can have. Just come back home.

[00:33:56] And she does not need that right now, at least for what she's trying to accomplish. So when he says, you know, you could just stay, she's like, nah, I can't, you know, I can't stay here. She'd rather couch surf than really go and live with Leon because, you know, I think she feels like going back into that relationship would be like complacency. There's a moment where she's talking to Lamar and he's talking about how his family wants him to go, you know, play in the church and all this other stuff. And that's going to like stunt his growth, right?

[00:34:25] He's not going to be able to shine like that. And Wanda says, if you're not shining, it's your fault. You know, this is the reality that we live in, but you decide how much effort you're going to be into, you know, put into shining in these situations. And so for Wanda, I mean, pushing Leon away and that's what she's going to do. Right. She, she doesn't feel that Leon is basically supporting her in her dream. She said, quit your job at the legal clinic. Give me money. So we can start a record label.

[00:34:54] And Leon like, you want me to quit my job and give money to the car. Oh my God. So they're, they're not on, they're not on the same page. And, but even Leon's like, I don't even know why you broke up. You just, you just dips at like, because you don't believe in her dream. She wants to chase her dream. Let her chase her dream. Here Wanda. Here's all my money. Come back with some, come back with some, I don't know. I guess I'll just sit here with the dogs.

[00:35:23] Quit your job. What is he supposed to do for money? So, so I'm enjoying the interplay with them. Also to me, Leon's actor, Isaiah John. I think that's his name. He has not been in nearly enough projects. I mean, I remember watching Snowfall thinking like, he, he's the breakout actor that we should all be looking at. And Mario, have you seen any other projects or movies with Isaiah John as the, like as

[00:35:52] a lead or anything? I truly have not. No. Yeah. Me neither. I'm looking now trying to see if I can find a Wikipedia page for this man or something. But I don't know. Leon, Leon might be the role he was born to play. Honestly, he's so good at it. And like, he's always been that like gangster kind of with a heart of gold. Who was like the voice of reason for everybody.

[00:36:17] That like, yeah, you just thought that he had his head on straight, even when he was doing like the most like dumbest stuff, you know? Yeah. And I just looked at the IMDb page. So he has about, I want to say about 13 credits prior to doing Snowfall. Guess how many he has after Snowfall? Oh my God. How many? It's called The Drop colon A Snowfall Saga. Okay. That's it.

[00:36:47] Oh my gosh. Yeah. So unless IMDb missed something, it seems like he's been throwing his, the last three years of his life just into this show. Into this. Yeah. That's crazy. Yeah. I mean, well, they have been developing this show since Snowfall ended. So maybe it's, I wonder, I hope at least he has like a fat contract for that, you know? Yeah. Same.

[00:37:14] Speaking of contracts, Wanda is going to Macroscope Records alongside BG. And when they get there, it's clear Macroscope needs a little assisting, right? It's the early nineties and they don't really know how to keep up with what's going on. I think some of the white executives are like, no, grunge is the way it's coming. And, you know, Jenny, the lead here is like, nah, that's not going to work.

[00:37:40] And so DG is, you know, shooting all these ideas out, playing the songs and nobody is, nobody's like attaching or picking up anything that she's like, he's putting down. They're just not into it. But Wanda is there and Wanda starts bringing up a rapper named Artillery. And this gets Jenny's kind of wheels turning. She said, oh, well, tell me more about Artillery. Artillery is a blood from what I can tell.

[00:38:06] And he is, you know, he seemed like he's like almost like an underground rapper. He's got plenty of mixtapes. Wanda is very familiar with his music. And Artillery also has a hit song in the hood right now. It's about killing cops. And so, yeah, at this point, LA, that song will get you some play, you know, straight out of content. Like I said, dropped a year prior to this, to this being set.

[00:38:32] And so, you know, we're very much in the F the Police era right now. But if you were familiar with the way the story goes for rappers like that is that they were basically saying F the Police due to the way the police was acting toward them. But then that caused the police to then retaliate. And so, you know, being the record label that is producing these songs could be a little iffy. Yeah, a little dicey. His song was called Officer Black Man, and it was really good.

[00:39:02] Yeah, and so she's like, yeah, yeah, we could sign him. He'd have to go to your label, of course. Right. But under us. Right. You be the face of it. Mm-hmm. And Daryl, he's interesting, right? Because when he comes on, I'm like, his actor looks so familiar. I think he played like kind of like in Disney movies. He was like the bad guy in Disney movies.

[00:39:31] I think he was in like Jump In and stuff like that. No, Jump In. I think so. I'm trying to look at his IMDb. Oh, he was in Sweet Vicious. I love Sweet Vicious. That's exactly where I know him from. Let It Shine. Sorry, not Jump In. Let It Shine. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yep, yep, yep. Lord of the Bling. He was... Anyways, he... But his... What it seems like his style is... To me, what I was getting...

[00:40:00] It kind of sounded kind of like MC Hammer-ish. Like he was giving like MC Hammer, like that kind of... Not squeaky rap, you know? Almost pop. Yes. And then... Or like Wanda says later, like New York brick building rap. Like this... That's not where you're at. You know? You're in LA. So trying to mimic these raps because that's right. That's the birthplace of rap. New York. You know what I'm saying?

[00:40:30] So trying to mimic this New York rap style. It's not hitting for actual artists like Artillery and Wanda. Yeah. You know what was hidden? That Peli Peli jacket he had on? I said, okay. It was nice. I did see that too. Okay. Okay. I was like, I'd look it up. But you know that jacket like $400 now. But back then, it was affordable. Okay. I was like, dang. It was a nice jacket. But you're right. His ideas are not really landing. But Wanda's are.

[00:40:59] And so they're told that, hey, if you come back with Artillery and a new song, we will talk about giving you a production deal on this. Because the way they were going to do it, they were about to get hosed on the actual success of this. So they have to go and do this. And they go pull up on Artillery. And they're playing all of his beats. You know, like which sound do you want to go with? Which one it is? And Artillery cannot be moved by any of this. What did you think about Artillery?

[00:41:27] Because you're like baby woke blood rapper. Yeah. It was very interesting. Right. And then he's sitting there rolling his eyes. Like, yes. And as he's talking, even the way he talks is like poetic. And he's calling them all sorts of sellouts. And inward, inward, man. And he's just like. Yeah, nigga, nigga, man. Yeah. He is like, he is like legit.

[00:41:55] Just like, I'm like, are you Tupac? Like, are you like, what are we doing? Like, what are we doing? Like, why are you being so, so poetic and thoughtful? And you bang. Like, he's clearly banging. But it was, I loved it. It was like, he talked about like his artistry. He's like, I'd rather be. He's like, you're a vulture, man. I'd rather be dead in the streets with my people cleaning my bones than you. And I forget what he called that white man. Fake ass Bob Dole.

[00:42:25] Yeah. Fake Bob Dole. Yeah. Like, it was so interesting. He was just, he was basically talking about he doesn't want to sell out. You know? And back then, you know, you make your tapes, you sell them on the streets. And that's what you do. That's your artistry. So I like that he wasn't easily swayed. They're like, we have a deal. We have all this. He's like, I don't care. Yeah. I mean, think about what happened to Franklin.

[00:42:52] It's not music, but it didn't take much to convince Franklin that he, hey, don't you want to do this? You know, get you rich. He's like, all right, cool, bet. You know? And so, yeah, here, artillery is like, nah, it's not worth my soul. And I also know y'all going to screw me over. Like, how often do white executives just show up in the hood like, want some money? It's like, probably not. True. And history will show you that a lot of artists, Black artists specifically, will go and have

[00:43:20] huge hits and never see the spoils of their labor. They're not going to get paid the way the companies are. You know, one of our faves, Mari, TLC. TLC? I was doing it in my head. You got to do it in the math. Doing the left eye math. Yeah. It's real. But you know who can persuade him? Wanda. Because again, Wanda's got the powers. Number one, she fine as hell. That's first and foremost. Wanda bad. And so she started talking.

[00:43:49] I'm like, yep, whatever you said. Yep. Yep. Absolutely. So it does look like artillery is into it. But Wanda does give him a good sales pitch about why he should allow her to try. She's an actual fan of his music. So she's not there just for the money. She's saying, no, I believe in your artistry. And I'm willing to support that. And so I don't know if it was that pitch or the fact that it looks like he wants to, you know, hook up with her. But he does agree. All right. Like, boom, I'll give you a week. And then we'll see what happens.

[00:44:19] Now, I was not expecting DG to be upset about it. But it seemed like he kind of was interested in Wanda to an extent. My note said they fucking. Because it kind of felt like it. But at the same time, maybe not. Like, yeah, we find out they still aren't. Yeah. So Wanda's powers of persuasion are working on. Pretty much everybody at first. But she does need the producer, right? She does need James.

[00:44:49] And so I'm sorry, Lamar. So by this time, Lamar is back at the house. And we find out that he turned down the job at the church. He's playing piano for the church folks. And everything is nice. But James is kicking it outside. And he finds out what's going on. So he goes in, sits down with Lamar, and kind of charges him up. Like, why would you turn down that job? Lamar just gets up and walks off. Leaving James on the piano. And, Mario, I was very surprised, pleasantly, that James has some musical ability, too.

[00:45:19] You know, we didn't really know that about him. But he's on the piano playing what I can only explain as my prerogative by Bobby Brown. Was that what that was? You know my ear. You know, I was like, my prerogative? He said, do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do. I said, what? So that's what it sounded like to me. But, yeah. It was so entertaining to see, you know, that maybe he's another person who his dream was deferred, right? He had other talents. Right.

[00:45:49] But because of his environment, he wasn't able to get there. And, of course, the family blames him for Lamar not taking that job. Yeah, of course. Big Daddy has some words for him. And he's like, I'm sat in it. I told him. He literally could not do anything more. He sat him down. He said, don't do this. And he called him a little nigga. And Big Daddy was like, don't you call him that. I was like, oh, we are. Some people. We're there. I like that word. Yeah.

[00:46:18] Yeah. Meanwhile, I wish my mom would tell me not to call my brother a nigga. Like, what? What? Have you met him? But I'm not. Yeah. He and Gilt. But you can call me. Anyway. You're talking crazy to me. What are you talking about? Yeah. But, you know, again, this is a time where people are really exploring what respectability looks like in the black community.

[00:46:43] Because, you know, the crack epidemic really shined a light on, OK, these people, they're doing drugs and there's crime in the community. I think in the 90s, even, you know, the Democrats who are traditionally who black people support, they're even looking for super, super predators out there. They're being hard on crime. Three strikes. Yeah. And all this stuff is developing in the 90s.

[00:47:05] And black people, white people, they were all supporting being harder on crime because nobody wants to live in a dangerous neighborhood. You know, so even though it's adversely affecting them, they're trying their best, like you said, to keep their head down, keep the crime low and to stay out of the way and to just try to thrive with their family in their community the best that they can. And so I wasn't shocked to see him have that reaction to him saying it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:47:33] But, yeah. That's how they were surviving. Yeah. That's how they were. That's how they were. That's how they were. You're really pushing our luck here.

[00:47:58] Because, again, we're in a community where these things can lead you toward the path of, you know, destruction, especially when artillery is a known gangster. Like, known. So it's not even like, well, we're going to do music, but we're not going to be around them people. No, you're actively telling me you're going to go get this kid and take him to go do music with the blood. And a popular one at that. And so Mama G is looking at her like she's crazy and telling her, like, this can't work. And that's what Wanda even picks up on.

[00:48:26] Is it only about the danger of it being artillery? Or do you think I'm dangerous as a former addict? Yeah, exactly. This is that moment that she picks up on. And this is what I did, too. And it's, again, like, how am I supposed to change if y'all don't believe in me and don't support the things that I want to change and stuff like that. But then, again, also, it's right. You're going to take that boy to go be in a nest of bloods.

[00:48:55] And I think later, also, we find out, like, I was kind of confused on if artillery had killed that cop that he's saying about because the cops are mad about that. I know we'll talk about that. You know, Jenny talks about creative license, you know, with these rappers. And they're not wrong, right? We saw, you know, if you've ever seen Straight Outta Compton, it's like a dramatization of kind of stuff that was happening.

[00:49:22] But even, you know, Ice Cube notably was having these conversations with people. No, even Ice Cube was notably having these conversations about, you know, I remember he had, like, the Nation of Islam on his side. Like, where he was talking about freedom of speech, you know, because they were trying to outlaw souls, like, fuck the police. You know, like, why are you doing that? That's the one I was thinking about. Yeah, exactly. And so because of that, you know, you do have the right to rap about however you want. But the cops are listening to these songs as well. We see them in the car hearing about these things and hearing about artillery and how he's going to blow up.

[00:49:52] But they're listening to his music and they hear him almost glorifying, not almost, but glorifying the killing of a police officer. And they don't take it well. So I don't know if he actually did it or if it's just the idea that he's promoting doing it that really has the cops pissed off. Yeah, that was what I was a little confused about, too. I was like, I don't know if he did it, but yeah.

[00:50:42] Yeah. He's ready to go because he's a fan, too. Right. He's a fan of the music and he knows artillery. And so he's ready to get down. But again, this is definitely something that the family is not going to support. What she wants is a sample of Cutie Pie by One Way. It was a song that she was listening to in the car when she was selling that Mustang. And so Lamar is already on the same page as her. He he he gets what she's saying. And the really saying the word artillery caught his attention.

[00:51:09] Artillery's name gets a lot of attention in this episode because we see the cops roll up on him at the police. Sorry, at the basketball court. And they're like not in uniform. But they go and beat the hell out of them bloods for no reason. Essentially. Basically, from what we could see. Because remember, the biggest and most profitable gang in the United States is the LAPD. And they sure did roll up on them. Beat them up without wearing their uniforms.

[00:51:38] Mad about the Officer Black Man song. And this is there. This is not hyperbole. We it is on record that this is what the LAPD used to do slash. Currently still doing. Right. Allegedly. Allegedly. Allegedly. Allegedly. No shoot officer. Oh, yeah. Calm down. Put your put your weapon. OK, but yeah, you're right. This is bad.

[00:52:06] And you've already talked about Rodney King. But that will come, like I said, 1991, I think, is when the Rodney King tape kind of like happens. And so this is probably par for the course. You know, you say these things. It gets public and the police are going to try to come put a stop to it because they don't want you inciting anybody else to be thinking about how cool it would be to kill a cop. And they probably also, like you said, some cops die on the job for sure or murdered on the job.

[00:52:32] And so this could be, you know, something that they are assigning to a very specific cop situation. We just don't know if that's what happened. So they like stuff the cassette into artillery's mouth while he's all bloody and beating up. They spit on him. And he's like, I'm going to put him in the car and then drop him off in the hood with the Crips so the vultures can take his pick off his bones. The black cop tried to try a little bit to stop it. Morgan!

[00:53:05] Morgan? Was it Morgan? Wasn't that Morgan? I thought so. Was it Morgan? I thought so. You got me looking back. I don't remember. I just saw black cop. He wasn't shadowed, but I thought that was Morgan. Okay. But look, it's something we'll have to check in on. Yeah, we'll check in on it. But yes, they do, Mari. It seems like they actually did drop him off in the streets with the Crips. Yeah, because next thing we know, they're saying that artillery is dead. And I was like, wait, what?

[00:53:37] I wasn't expecting that part. You know, I really thought like, oh, okay. Because, you know, I thought that artillery was going to be one of the gateway in. And so when they said, oh, well, he didn't. Like, he died. I was like, oh, that's not great. It's not great. So we also see another scene where Wanda talks to DG about their partnership. Because remember, she's like an intern. But she's doing a lot of the legwork here.

[00:54:06] She was the one who got artillery's name, you know, in front of the producers. She was the one who convinced artillery to even work with them. And she's bringing Lamar, who is the producer. So DG is not really that active in this. But he says, this is my name on the line. It's my money and my connection. And so I'll be getting all the credit for this. He's like, I could put you on, but I can't. I'm not going to put you on like that. So she gets frustrated, kind of like grabs him. He smacks her down.

[00:54:36] And then that's when they get the news that artillery is dead. So the news of artillery's death does get to Lamar. And you can just see him again, kind of zoning out. Little catatonic because, you know, his dream, he had it for a split second. Right. And then immediately after it was gone. Wanda's been having an awful day as well. Her car broke down. You know, if it does, you know, it's one of those things. Yeah. When it rains, it pours.

[00:55:07] So but the next time we see Wanda, she's leaving the hospital because apparently she got word that artillery is not actually dead. They just don't want to get it out to the other gangs that he's down bad like this. And so they're like, OK, let's pretend that he's dead while we take him back and kind of nurse him back. And it's not and I don't even know if it's just the other gangs that they don't want them to know about this, because also the cops. It's probably great. Yeah. It's great for the police to think he's dead because maybe they'll leave him alone. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

[00:55:36] I would be hiding more from the police. And he's like recovering. And what a what is basically a protection circle. Yeah. All the bloods pulled up, like all the L.A. Bloods pulled up to kind of like just watch, you know, nobody's coming in here that we don't know because we're going to make sure that he's OK when, you know, as he recovers. Now, Lamar gets the call from Wanda that artillery is alive.

[00:56:05] And next thing you know, we see him leaving and trying to sneak out. But James is there and kind of catches him on the way out. And they have a conversation because James, what are you talking about? You think I'm going to let my little brother and my female cousin go to the blood house and just right after artillery got attacked? Y'all got to be crazy. But Lamar stands his ground.

[00:56:32] He finally just says what, you know, they've been alluding to all episodes that nobody can be great because y'all won't allow them to be great because everybody's so afraid of what the outside world outside of, you know, being in this community, what it would do to you. You know, this isn't the big bad wolf from their perspective. This is real life. They're like, no, these aren't like, oh, well, one day you might go out to the big city and something might happen to you. No, they're saying you might go outside and down the street and something might happen to you. But Lamar is willing to risk his life.

[00:57:01] He said, I'm not going to be able to ignore the urge to do music. You'll always have this issue with me. I'm going to go. And so James finally feels like, okay, I got to support him in this moment. And to me, it feels like James, like, I don't know. He can tell that his brother has the opportunity to be special where James might not have had that opportunity. And so who is he to stand in the way? Exactly.

[00:57:28] He, yeah, he says, well, I'm not going to just let you walk up in there, I guess. So, and it's that, that need for him, from him to like protection and stuff like this. So I did like this moment that he's like actually trying to support his brother. Me too. But he does warn him that you're going to see a different side of your grandparents if you choose this route. And that is the truth because them people are going to go from don't leave the house.

[00:57:56] We love you to you can't come in here no more. You know, I'm pretty sure they're going to be like, leave that gangster shit down the street. And he's, that's one of those, that's one of those trokes that we see, you know, where your family wants to protect you. But when you mess up at that point, they locked the door and shut you out. You know, remember in the nineties, it was such an early two thousands as well. It's such a trope. Like if you get pregnant, you can't come here. So now you're going to put me and the baby on the street. Now, who the hell is that going to help?

[00:58:25] Nobody, but that's what they was doing. Exactly. So they go pick up Wanda and then they head over to the blood hive. That's what I'm going to call it for now. The blood frat house. And when they pull up, James has to go in. He looks around, makes sure it's relatively cool. He has his gun on him just in case something pops off. That gun ain't going to save you in here. It's a lot of guns in there. Okay. You're going to have to shoot your way out of a swarm of bloods.

[00:58:54] It just ain't going to do well. They meet Dara or Dara at the door. She's kind of like the, I guess she might be his manager or maybe a relative. Yeah. But she's telling them, y'all can stay if y'all want to. But if these bloods start getting out of control, I can't stop them from wilding. They don't know who you are. And knowing who you are is going to be very important to them because they could, you know, you could be setting them up. You could be the ops. You could be a cop. We just don't know.

[00:59:21] And so they come in because again, Wanda talks her way into the room. They're in there and they're trying to get in there to talk to artillery. He's laid up, just hurt. They're listening to music. But then eventually some of the bloods start asking questions. Now, who are these next? You know what I'm saying? So they're asking questions. And one of the bloods comes out. He's like, nah, somebody needs to explain to me what's going on. There's even a moment I thought was pretty interesting.

[00:59:50] James gets recognized by a dude named Tiptoe. And I thought, well, what is that about? You know? And James kind of like, I don't know you. Tiptoe's like, no, man. No, you remember me, Tiptoe. I was thinking, Tiptoe, you got to chill. I don't know what happened. But you're making the block hot. And it only gets hotter because the bloods start walking around, asking questions. Who are you? Who sent you? Why are y'all in here? And the only thing that saved them, like you said, Mari, music.

[01:00:19] Music, yes. Music. Lamar plays his tape on the radio in there and everybody just starts jamming out to it. So much so that Artillery comes out and just starts freestyling, which was great. He was hurt, though. He was real hurt. Yeah. But what did you think about the reaction to the song? Because everybody was vibing to it. They were dancing.

[01:00:47] But pretty soon, they really start chanting almost like the chorus to the song. These are life and times of a rider. Fuck the other siders. All right. This song, to me, sounded like a little bit like a war chant at some point, you know? Mm-hmm. Yes. Right. Exactly. Like, it was great music. And then it's like, wait, gang war? Right. So they said, wait a minute. Hold on. We didn't sign up for the gang war.

[01:01:17] We just came in and danced for y'all and that's it. You know? That's all. Yeah. Exactly. We just wanted to mix music. Now we inciting violence. Oh, no. So, yeah. But that was cool. That was like a real cool chorus and all that to come up with on the spot like that. That's good. Artillery has a gift. But again, the song really did lead into what I thought was a moment of unity amongst these Bloods

[01:01:47] that maybe the people in the room, you know, that aren't Bloods weren't really prepared for. You know, they kind of like the music drops out. You kind of see Wanda and Lamar and James looking around a little uncomfortable because again, if... Yeah. Because again, you said like it might be a gang war. But what if these Bloods were just like, let's go get the cops. You know? Let's just go. I need to go home. I got to get out of here. So, yes. And now Lamar is tied to that moment, right?

[01:02:17] That's his song. And so we can only imagine where that's going to lead him. But Mari, that's episode one. Click Pop is what they call it. Click Pop. Yes. Episode one down. So excited.
