"Too Woke" for The Roast of Kevin Hart?

Welcome to Recap Kickback where we chop it up about black entertainment news and discuss all of our favorite movies and shows. This week on Recap Kickback, Chappell and Mari are back to discuss one of the wildest comedy events on Netflix — The Roast of Kevin Hart! Before getting into the jokes, celebrity appearances, and chaotic roast moments, we kick things off with some Black entertainment news making waves online. We discuss updates from Blex Media, including Fourth Wing and Queen Latifah. Then we tackle Issa Rae’s upcoming vertical drama series Screen Time and what it could mean for the future of mobile storytelling and Black creators in digital media. We also talk about the rise of Druski and why his skits continue to dominate social media timelines. Finally we jump into Netflix’s The Roast of Kevin Hart, and wondering, "Are we too woke for roasts now?" Of course, we had to discuss the looming shadow of Katt Williams and whether this roast — and the jokes surrounding their history — could lead to a possible reconciliation between the two comedy giants after one of the most talked-about feuds in stand-up comedy. #KevinHart #FunnyAF #FunnyAFwithkevinhart #Netflix #theroastofkevinhart #shanegillis #TheRock #ReginaHall #KattWilliams #JeffRoss #Lizzo #SherylUnderwood #PeteDavidson Subscribe to the podcast here: RecapKickback.com/Subscribe Follow Chappell on social media - @RecapKickback Follow Mari on Bluesky - MariTalks2Much.bsky.social Get your very own custom cup created by Mari here: https://maricrafts2much.bigcartel.com/ Recap Kickback is also partnering with “Bet On Black” Gia’s substack newsletter about Blackness in Reality TV! - check it out here: https://betonblack.substack.com/ A special thank you to Leaf Vxllage for our intro song, "Wall Maria

[00:00:00] We all love Survivor, and in my first ever book, The Tribe and I Have Spoken, I'll tell you how this little show evolved from that juggernaut first season on the beaches of Borneo all the way into its landmark 50th season. I'm like a storyteller, that's what I do. What role did the greatest players, the unforgettable moments, and Jeff Probst himself have in shaping what Survivor has become today? And what contribution did we play in building this worldwide tribe of Survivor fans? Love you, bae!

[00:00:28] For you future players, I've also included my ultimate Survivor playbook to help you win the million dollars, unlike me. It's fun, you know what dude, it's fun. This hardcover edition is filled with beautiful Survivor illustrations in every chapter and is an amazing addition for every Survivor collector. I'm a meat collector. Pre-orders are everything for a book launch, so to say thank you to everyone who pre-orders, you'll receive an exclusive digital bonus chapter

[00:00:56] called The Ultimate Rites of Passage. My personal tribute to all the players who have ever competed on the show, all 751. This is huge. I needed this. Pre-order wherever books are sold, in hardcover and as an audiobook at robhasabook.com. That's robhasabook.com. Nicely done, Rob.

[00:01:21] Hey, what's up fam? And welcome back again to Recap Kickback. It's me, your host Chappell.

[00:01:47] And we're back again to talk about whatever the hell we want to talk about here on this podcast. And with me to talk about the roast of Kevin Hart, amongst other things. It is my co-host Mari Forth. Mari, welcome back. What's up, Chappelle? We are back. We're doing comedy two weeks in a row. A lot of Kevin Hart. Who is it? Is it June yet? You looking for a reprieve? I am. I'm looking for something interesting.

[00:02:17] But you know what? Nope. Next week, we're doing Is Got Is. So I'm excited. I'm excited. Yes. That's going to be a fun time. But Mari's right. Last week, we did talk about Kevin Hart's Funny AF, his comedy competition show on Netflix that led directly into Kevin Hart's Goat Roast or The Roast of Kevin Hart brought to us by Netflix as well. And so we will be talking about that today, amongst other things.

[00:02:47] But first and foremost, I want to thank everybody for being here, rocking with us this entire time here on Recap Kickback. Shout out to everybody who's been checking out our Flavor of Love Cinematic Universe coverage right now. We are deep into charm school live every Sunday. Me with the legendary Chantel Francis as I revisit the chaos. And she watches it for the very first time. All those unforgettable reality TV moments that helped shape an entire era of television.

[00:03:16] We're doing it right here on Recap Kickback. So catch that live and go back and start at the beginning. Go start at Flavor of Love. Start and go through, you know, all that good stuff. I love New York. And then catch up with us on charm school because I recently started to include the links to the episodes for the, you know, the hidden media, the lost media in the show notes. So if you have not seen these episodes, you can check out our show notes for each of the podcasts. I will be including the link to the charm school episodes in there.

[00:03:46] Also, while you're hanging out with us, don't forget you can now support Recap Kickback directly here on YouTube with tips. We got our first tip last Sunday. Yeah, well, someone asked in the live chat, like, hey, can I, you know, can I tip you? Or like, do y'all take Vidmo tips or something like that? I was like, I don't know. And then I realized we do have tips set up here, but I won't be begging for money like that. If you got it, give it to us. I like that. We want the money. But we appreciate all the support that we can get, you know.

[00:04:14] So every bit of support helps. It helps keep Mari here because she don't work for free. Or at least I don't want her to. But it also will help us improve the content and cover, you know, all the black entertainment shows that we cover, the reality shows, movies, music, wrestling conversations, whatever the case may be. So a big shout out to anybody who wants to donate to us.

[00:04:36] Right. And if you can't tip, subscribe, subscribe, hit the hype button, leave a like, share the YouTube video with your friends. Like, that's the way you can definitely support for free. You know what I'm saying? Also leaving comments on our Apple or Spotify, wherever you listen to us. Again, it's something so small as just hitting the like button, hit the subscribe button, or just hitting five stars, not even having to leave a message.

[00:05:04] It's something that's so small that it seems insignificant that really, really helps us out, helps the algorithm out, helps us as creators. Yeah. A hundred percent agree right there with Mari. We'll beg for that because that's free. We will beg for it. Absolutely. I will probably. I am not too proud to beg. As TLC once said, I ain't, ain't too proud to beg. Two of TLC. I don't mention that other woman right now. She's kind of on my short list. She ain't time out. Luzanda.

[00:05:35] Yeah. Mari, you're selling cups. Yes, I am. And where's your cup, Chappelle? What's going on? You just had it. I always drink out of my big cup. Okay. Number one. Oh, okay. But I was looking for my. Look at this. This is. Ooh. This is better. If you're looking at the YouTube right now, team black versus team green. Pick your fighter. Yeah. House of the Dragon coverage is coming back up.

[00:06:04] If you want a cup like this. Mine says team black on the back. Chappelle says team green on the back. Yeah. Mine has the book realistic regalia of Rheera. That will not be what will be in the show. But it's fine. I can do both. If you want cups like this, you can go to my website. That's currently at the bottom of the screen here. Mariocraftstomuch.bigcartel.com. I make custom cups. I might have actually.

[00:06:33] Did I change that URL? I don't know. We'll see. Let me know so I can update our records. You know? I don't think I did. But yeah. So yeah. We're selling cups. Crime Scene merch that Chappelle just showed as well. That is also available at my big cartel shop.com. So if you want Crime Scene merch as well, my other podcast, you can get it from there too. So yeah. Support me by buying a cup. That's fine. Yeah.

[00:07:02] I drink out of the cup every day because I drink a lot of water. And so. And this cup is huge. So it does help me with my daily water intake. I strongly recommend getting one of Mario's cups. Especially if you have like a favorite movie or show or book or something like that you like. Because they are custom. Once Big Brother season rolls around. I haven't decided, you know, how hard I'm going to stand. I guess it depends on who's coming in the house, Mari.

[00:07:27] But given the right person or the right combination of house guests, you might get some cups. Could you imagine how a foul take would go up back in the day? I'm telling you. I plan. Yes. I plan to really make some. Oh my God. The cookout. A cookout cup would be great. So I customize everything. I can put anything on a cup. I can put your kids, your dogs, your pets.

[00:07:54] I've put my kids on a cup as a gift for this Mother's Day. So anything you want. Go check on my website to see what I offer. And that is the correct. I was like, I know I didn't change that. So that's correct. That's correct. Marcraftstomuch.bigcartel.com. All right.

[00:08:11] Before we get into the Kevin Hart of it all, we did have some updates as far as things that have been going on in the Black entertainment world. And I want to start off with some news from our friends over at Blex Media. It's where I go to get a lot of my Black entertainment news before I come here and report it here back at Recap Kickback. Peacock. Peacock.

[00:08:39] Peacock sets all premiere dates for Friday the 13th prequel called Crystal Lake starring Will Catlett and Devin Kessler. And so that's up here on our screen. Will and Devin. And apparently Crystal Lake will be the prequel series to Friday the 13th. And it's going to be starring these two beautiful Black people. And so, you know, you know the rules, Mari. If the Black folks are starring in it, I got to go watch it. But why are the Blacks at Crystal Lake? What? Right.

[00:09:08] That was my first question. What are y'all doing there? What are we doing? I didn't even know Black folks be in there. We don't be in there. I guess we got to watch to see why. I ain't seen a Black person in them original Friday the 13th. So the series expands the mythology of the Friday the 13th franchise by focusing on Pamela Voorhees, a.k.a.

[00:09:33] Jason's mom, long before the events that turned Crystal Lake into a horror landmark. And Linda Cardellini will be playing Pamela Voorhees. That's how you know we get old. That's how you know we get old. Right. Linda Cardellini is now playing Jason's mom. Yeah. She will forever be Velma. Yeah. Oh, or the or Chetney. I think her name was from. Is that Legally Blonde? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:10:03] Yeah. I think that was her name. Yeah. Linda Cardellini. Something like that. Oh, or or. This is going to be real. She. Yeah. Yeah. That messed up your perm. But, you know, she also I remember her. My earliest memory of Linda Cardellini was on Boy Meets World. She was that other girl that that Corey kissed in the mountains that time and had Topanga rethinking their whole high school romance that they had. Yeah. Linda Cardellini.

[00:10:32] And I was even as a child, I was like Topanga chill is Linda Cardellini. You know, Corey's only he only a man. He's just a boy. He can only do so much. He can only do so much. So, yeah. So we'll be checking that out. If you've been following Recap Kickback closely, you know that Latonya and I started covering the It series, Welcome to Dairy and the Pennywise series, I guess I should call it, Welcome to Dairy. But we had to put a hold on that because Latonya had been feeling ill.

[00:11:01] And so keep Latonya in y'all's prayers. And then when she's ready to come back, we will definitely finish covering that. But also, Mari, Michael B. Jordan is back with some information about your kind of vibe over here. Fourth wing adaptation. He's got some news for you. Yes. What's the news? I didn't see. You ain't been kidding us? I know he in it. I know he in it. But I mean, he's like producing it too, I believe. Right?

[00:11:28] Isn't he like he's producing it and they cast him in there or something like that? Yeah. Yeah. So the biggest update of the night. No. It says the adaptation of the bestselling romantic novel has received an official order deal. So now it's official. It's all been like speculating, blah, blah, blah.

[00:11:50] But now this novel that was published in 2023 is now becoming a show officially. And so I'm sure we will get to hear Mari's thoughts about these dragon riders. What is fourth wing about? This is the series that me and Kirsten covered here last year on Recap Kickback. We covered the third installment, the third book.

[00:12:18] It's about dragon riders. It's a very, you know, young adult romanticy. We got to break up into quadrants. Everybody gets a label. We got to save the world. So insert all of that here. It's a really great series. Me and if you want to know more about it, me and Kirsten did a quick series overview. And then we reviewed the whole third book, Onyx Flame, right here on Recap Kickback.

[00:12:47] So once that show comes out, I'm pretty sure I can, me and her can, like, tap her to do that coverage. That'd be fun. I mean, you can be there too, I guess. But whatever. Thank you. It's so nice of you. But yeah. On your own network. Yeah. So it should be fun. Yeah. It's about dragon riders. It's about how dragons pick their riders, different breeds of dragons.

[00:13:16] How that affects people's powers. They all have powers too. It's really fun. It's a fun time. It's a great read. It's the Fourth Wing series. The first book was called Fourth Wing. The second book is called Iron Flame. And the third book is called Onyx. Wait. Onyx. Iron Flame. Onyx. Go look. It's there. Onyx. I also. Onyx something. Onyx Storm. There it is. Onyx Storm. And I also sell. I sell cups.

[00:13:46] I've sold Fourth Wing cups too. Yes. As well. Mm-hmm. It's a fun book series. So I'm excited. They've had Michael. So I didn't know that this was like just the official announcement. They've been talking about this like for a minute now. I thought it was been. It was. I think Amazon Studios was in talk for it. I thought for the longest. Michael B. Jordan has been rumored to be in it for the longest. I'm pretty sure me and Carson talked about this. So I don't.

[00:14:15] We don't know who he would be. Like unless they age the characters up significantly. The characters are about like 21. I believe. I believe it's like 21. 18, 21. Something to that nature. So I don't know who he would play. Yeah. I don't know if he's actually going to be in it. I think it's rumored. But I know that he is obviously producing it. And so, you know. Right. It's easy for him to put himself in it.

[00:14:44] But like you said. Right. They skew a little bit younger than Michael B. Jordan normally. So. It would be interesting. Yeah. Yes. Do you remember BET? No, I don't. It's gone, isn't it? Well, I don't know about if it's gone. But BET Plus definitely took a hit with Tyler Perry. Kind of, you know, making a big sale of some of the stuff that he does. But they have this original comedy coming up for BET.

[00:15:13] It's a mockumentary called Lot Patrol. And it's going to be starring D-Ray Davis, Carl Anthony Payne, Tamara Kissin, and Darius McRae. If you can see our screen, you see our boy up there, Eddie Winslow. But it's going to go behind the gates of a major Hollywood studio where the real show is always off camera. Now, when they say a major Hollywood studio, my first thought was Tyler Perry Studios, even though I know it ain't in Hollywood.

[00:15:40] I really think it would be very fun to look at kind of, you know, what a Black studio set and cast looks like. Because I don't think we've seen that perspective on television before. Yeah, that's funny. I didn't even think about that. That would be so interesting. Oh, yeah. And lots of good actors and comedians and actresses here. You know what? We'll give it a try. We love a good mockumentary. Mockumentaries are in.

[00:16:09] They're doing the thing right now. So I'm down. Yeah, me too. I didn't have a release date yet. But it is coming soon. A premiere date is just, you know, pending. So we will see what happens. I mean, it'll give me another reason to watch BET because it's been a minute. I'm sure this would be on BET proper because, like we said, there's no more BET+. They started releasing some of the BET Plus content over on Paramount.

[00:16:39] I was on Paramount. So no word on how much they're going to put over there. But go check if your favorite show is over there. Yeah. I have to talk to you about the Queen. And I'm sure you probably aren't prepared to have this conversation. Queen Latifah. You know, we both love Queen Latifah. She is going to be a coach on season 30 of The Voice. Did you hear about this?

[00:17:10] Oh, no. I know. I'm so excited. I gotta watch The Voice again. I gotta watch The Voice again. I have to come back for the Queen. I know. The Voice is like one of the only like TV shows that literally I only, I have no problem not watching it until like somebody I like is the, comes on and is the host. Like that was the only time I would watch it back in the day.

[00:17:39] So I absolutely gotta watch it. The Queen's Day. I gotta watch it. I gotta see who her coach is going to be. Like I always watch, I don't know if I said it on here, but I always watch, you gotta watch The Blind Auditions because you gotta like, you want to hear the voices. And then I love watching the knockout round because I love when they do the things where they're mixing their voices and stuff like that. And then after that, I always stop. Once I get to the voting, I always stop watching. Always. Yeah. Yeah. Same.

[00:18:10] Because we know. Yeah. Because we know. I just saw a very Republican finale of American Idol the other day. It's still on TV. Apparently it's still holding on strong. But The Voice to me is an enigma because it's been on for 29 seasons. Which is crazy. And I cannot name one winner of The Voice. I've seen seasons of that show. I know reality TV. And I still.

[00:18:38] Like I could name you the winner of, what was it? Who wants to be the next best superhero? You know, like I could name you the winner of The Wild Rapper Show. Yeah. Yeah. But I can't. I can't name one winner. Because The Voice is such a. The Voice is such an enigma when it comes to these type of voice shows. Right? Because one, it is one of the only shows that really is supposed to be there

[00:19:06] to tout and highlight the actual vocal performance. Right? But the problem is, whoever the winner is or whoever, as the people are going through, their vocal attributes are being attributed to their coach. Like The Voice itself. The last episode, the last season I watched, the episode I watched, I think I watched the knockout rounds from this past season.

[00:19:31] Um, they have the, like the, the, they do this, the jerseys hanging in the rafters type thing. Right? For each season, the winner. The people's names aren't on those jerseys. It's the coach's name. It's the coach's names on those jerseys. And that's the, and that's the kind of messed up thing about The Voice. It's like, yeah, you go on it. You want to make a name for yourself. You want to get seen. You want to get that exposure.

[00:19:56] You have a good vocal, you have good vocals, but it might not be like, you might not have the look that, you know, the record labels want. But if you connect with people and you, you move numbers, you, you, you want to get a footing in the door, but you're not going to be remembered because it's only going to be the team Adam or team Blakely who are did. Oh, Oh, Kelly Clarkson was able to pull one out this season. You know what I'm saying?

[00:20:24] It just, I don't, it, that's what I'm like. I was like, I don't know if you would want to go on that show. You know what I'm saying? As a true vocalist, especially again, as a black vocalist, because I don't even have a black person ever on one more. Yeah. That guy who was Alicia Keys' backup singer, the one from, I don't know. That sounds slightly familiar. I think he, I think he won season two or something like that of The Voice. Look at me talking about, I can't name one.

[00:20:53] And I almost named, I mean, I don't know. I don't know. But I'm just saying, it's normally always like team Adam versus team Blake. It's always a country star. It's just like, I only know one person from The Voice and it's sadly because of her untimely death and because she was a star before The Voice. So like, it's just, I don't know. I love watching it though. But I, as a singer, I wonder if it's even worth it anymore.

[00:21:20] A lot of these vocal shows, it's kind of like, you wonder if it's even worth it anymore because people are getting famous off of TikTok, off of Two Minute Sounds. I saw a girl, I just saw a girl make a rap that is now like being remixed that I keep like hearing, you know, I ain't never seen a, anyways. But yeah, so it's just like, this is like what, like, I don't even know if it's, if it's,

[00:21:49] if it's even relevant anymore. The, the last good really new vocal competition that I liked, we can't even talk about no more because Redacted Diddy was on it. When they did, yeah. You remember when they did The Four? I forgot about that. Yeah. I liked The Four because of the, the whole like competitive edge to it.

[00:22:14] Um, and we, like, they can't even do it no more because of Diddy's thing. And it gave us that priceless gif of that, that dude looking back at him and Diddy looking back at each other. It's the smirk, it's the grin, the smirk for me. I used to use that all the time, but damn, I can't use it no more. Like, I just feel so gross using the Diddy, uh, the Diddy, uh, gifs or whatever. So I get it.

[00:22:40] And, and The Four was such, it was such a interesting vocal concept and, but it killed itself because the person who was the least vocally good won it and it killed itself. So, yeah, that was like, that was like what, 2018? That was like right before COVID. If any, if people don't know what The Four was, it was like, it was the singing competition show and you were competing to get into four chairs.

[00:23:09] And each week, like whoever was in the four chairs, um, somebody, a new person would come on. They would sing the audience. It was an audience vote and the audience would vote. Like, should this person take somebody's chair? And if the audience says, yeah, they should take a chair. The person could then challenge one of the four. And then they did another sing off. And then the audience, it was so good, but they let this white girl who couldn't sing win. So.

[00:23:39] Yikes. Um, Mari, you sent me the link to Issa Rae's TikTok TV show. Uh, yeah. I watched this show. Um, they call these things vertical dramas or something like that. Now. Um, I believe Aza from Big Brother has one going right now. Really? Um, yeah. It's like, uh, kimchi and Joloff, I believe it's called. Um, and so, yeah. So this is a very popular thing.

[00:24:06] It's basically setting up, uh, these shows to drop on streaming, but obviously vertically. So you can watch them on your phone. Uh, not streaming, but on like social media. So you can drop, watch them on your phone. And then they put them in a minute, two minutes long snippets. So you can just like breeze through the episodes. And I feel like this comes from, you know, kind of those days or even just the trend of, uh, TikTok stories. Right. Where you listen to a story and someone's telling you something really riveting.

[00:24:36] And then at the end they said, okay, tune into the next part tomorrow. And you're like, oh damn, I gotta watch all this girls. Yeah. The recent pieces of it all. Exactly. Um, there's this new one that I had watched. This poor girl. She's, uh, she's, uh, she's a lesbian dating. Uh, she called her, uh, uh, a stud poodle, I guess, uh, is what she was going at. Uh, because the woman, the woman she was dating was, well, she wasn't,

[00:25:00] she ended up finding herself in a, in a fling with a, a, a Sigma Gamma role who was taken. And she proceeded to watch that taken woman, get her ass beat in the middle of the club and down the street as her girlfriend chased her up and down the road. And this girl decided to keep, keep dating this woman who just got her ass beat publicly. And so that was the last one I watched before I tapped into this Issa Rae, uh, story. So I'm all in, I'm all in.

[00:25:29] Uh, Mari, what is Issa Rae's, uh, show called? Yeah. I mean, this is a little bit more highbrow than that. Uh, Issa Rae's show. That was real life. This is, this is drama. That was real life. This is drama. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, this show is called Screen Time. Uh, like Chappelle said, it, it is literally made for the TikTok format. The, the episodes literally are, are blinked at two minutes. I'm like, man, the attention span.

[00:25:57] And they, I understand why they're doing this. They're doing this because people have the smallest attention span. Me put a 30 minute show up there. I'm fine, but I get it. I get it. Yeah. I get it because it's like, cause even me, I watched half of it. I was like, okay, I'll come back to it later. So I get it, you know, but it's, it's, it's a show called Screen Time. And basically it's, um, two couples were introduced to two couples. Uh, they're at one of the couple's houses.

[00:26:24] And while they're at one of the couple's houses, the couple's like TV and all of their devices get hacked. And the TV is like forcing them to meet up together and reveal secrets about, about themselves to each other, or they will release all of their data, all their pictures to like the rest of the world. And, um, it'll affect their different careers. So it's like a, it's a drama thriller in such a bite-sized, um, package.

[00:26:54] It's so riveting. I love the acting. I'm like, some of the actors, I'm like, do I know you type thing? You know what I'm saying? I'm like, you look real familiar, but I don't know. Um, but I love it. It's, it's like, it's like, like a step above a soap opera acting. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's, it's like, it's, it's a step above Tyler Perry acting. You know what I'm saying? So it's like, but it's not insecure. So it's, you know what I'm saying?

[00:27:24] Like, it's not that it's not insecure rap shit. It's the, it's so interesting. Like, I want to know what the budget for this was because it looks great, but it doesn't look expensive. If that makes sense. And, um, so, and it's been real good so far. Uh, the next installment, I believe we'll drop on the 22nd of May, I think as well. So, um, yeah, I'm loving it.

[00:27:50] And, and Issa Rae, I love how she is always innovating. You know, uh, that hit that blow with the HBO deal. You know, we've talked about it on here plenty of times, but the fact that she keeps innovating and it's kind of like her coming back to her social media roots that, you know, she, we knew her as awkward black girl on YouTube, you know what I'm saying? Like, so for her to come back, basically I'm, I'm a supporter.

[00:28:20] I'm a stick beside her. Uh, I think that it had millions of views last time I had checked. I was trying to check. It had, it had millions and millions of views on the, um, the different episodes. So like, I think, I think she's going to be doing well. So we want to, we want everybody to get 3 million views just on that's episode seven.

[00:28:45] So, um, make sure you go and support Issa Rae and what she's doing. It's worth it. And it's so quick. Yeah. Easy watch. I watched the first episode, like Maura said, in about three seconds and I was like, oh, this is good already. Um, you might've recognized one of those cast members, uh, Brittany Jefferson, uh, was from Rap Shit. Uh, I believe she popped in in season two, uh, as Alicia in Rap Shit. And so, um, yeah, some familiar faces there for sure.

[00:29:15] Uh, but yeah, check that out because we got to support Issa. We got to support these black creators because, um, especially these American creators, Maura, because these Brits, you know, I don't care what nobody says. Rewind to tape. Rewind to tape. These Brits be stealing our jobs. We've been, we've been talking about the inmates. We love y'all. We love y'all. We love y'all. But. But. Y'all be stealing our jobs. You can't lie. We got to talk about Drewski.

[00:29:43] Um, Maura, I saw the Drewski skit and he immediately sent it to you. I'm talking about within a second of his life. Because Drewski's most recent, uh, claim to fame is that he's been making his, uh, satire videos, but they've kind of had like a, almost like a political statement. I feel like he's matured a lot more in his comedy to where it's a lot smarter than it was at first. You know, I think he was very much surface level and now he's getting deeper into the commentary he made.

[00:30:09] And this most recent video is Drewski highlighting, uh, that sometimes the, the black actors that are known for the best American black roles are often British, you know? And so, um, what did you think about it? Because we didn't really talk about it, but I want to know what you thought about the skit. It was on the nose.

[00:30:32] I mean, honestly, like the best, the best thing about satire and what Drewski does is like, he's like, he might tell a joke, but he'll never tell a lie type thing. And again, he has just been on a tear. He's just been on a great run from the mega church pastor skit to the, uh, Erica Kirk skit, the NASCAR skit.

[00:30:58] Like he is the definition of anybody can get it. Like it's anybody can get it, but it's smart, nuanced takes that are just socially biting. And he, he, he is talking about what is happening today. Kev on stage calls him a social anthropologist. That's exactly what Drewski is. He's preserving this time period through these skits. He is not lying. He is not fabricating.

[00:31:26] It is, it is stuff that we are seeing. And he is again, taking stuff that is real and real life and, you know, turning it up to 11, uh, you know, exposing it to the max. And that's what satire is. Good satire where, you know, it's satire and you know what it's being said is so, it's so hard to do nowadays because you can satire so hard to do when our actual news stories read

[00:31:55] like satire or read like somebody did a Mad Libs. And this is the current world. So for Drewski to be, have like his finger on the pulse and be so deaf with it is just amazing. Like I, he should host SNL. Like he should host SNL. He shouldn't go and be on SNL. No. I, but he needs to host it because he is that big of a deal and they'd be stupid not to have him on there.

[00:32:25] I think it's time. I think he's earned his spot at this point. You know, I've never been a huge fan of like the people making skits online. I just felt like even in Vine days, I was like, it just wasn't my type of vibe. Yeah. Yeah. But like I said, I've watched Drewski mature and that's not something you could say about a lot of comedians. Sometimes comedians get stuck in like, this is what made me funny. And I have to keep doing the same exact thing over and over again. And then if times change and I'm not able to change, I'm just going to blame time. I won't blame, you know, me. I won't try to evolve.

[00:32:54] I'm just going to say, you know, y'all are so different. Y'all so woke, blah, blah, blah. And so, um, I appreciate him being able to switch it up and do something new because he makes some good points. Brits, uh, they did laugh at it. Damson Idris, Wumi Masako as well. Um, you know, yeah, her too. Yeah. Oh my God. Yeah.

[00:33:22] Nigerian British actress, Wumi Masako. God dang it. We can have nothing. I mean, we can have it, right? Because Mari and I do not participate in diaspora rewards at all. We don't. These people black. We don't. It's all for jokes. We don't. Yeah. But like, at the same time. Damn. When I found out Delroy was a Brit, that's the one that took me out for Wumi. What? That was crazy.

[00:33:51] I was like, don't go ahead and be a Brit for 30 years and we don't know. And we don't know. 21 Savage. You know, like, it's too much. It's too much. It's too much. But shout out to all of them. They are really, they are really doing a lot of work. A lot of good work in Hollywood. Portraying and being in these roles that we definitely need to see. But it is very funny, you know, that the thugs in these roles be people be named Damson Idris and Idris Elba. You know? So, there you go.

[00:34:21] Mari, that was a good, fun little current events that we just went through. I thoroughly enjoyed that. If you enjoyed that, let us know other things you want us to talk about. Give us some comments. Let us know in the YouTube comments. But you can also email us recapkickback at gmail.com and let us know what you think about some of the current events and things that have been going on. Now, our main event. We have to talk about the roast of Kevin Hart. And this, of course, like we said, was coming.

[00:34:50] You know, we knew it was coming because of the funny AF show that Kevin Hart had. Obviously, he makes a lot of money off of Netflix. And so, in the same vein of the Tom Brady's roast post. Yeah, and they make a lot of money off of him. Make no mistake. You know, they celebrated Tom Brady. And now it's time to celebrate Kevin Hart. And so, per usual, we have a roast with a dais, a star-studded dais of people who will be talking shit about Kevin Hart.

[00:35:19] And a star-studded crowd. Mari, first and foremost, everybody was there. We're the only people who didn't make it. Apparently, I guess our invite got lost in the mail or something. But you know most of those people are like, I'm just here because Netflix made me. Netflix made me. You ever say Netflix made them come? Yeah, because when I saw J-Lo out there, I said, J-Lo? But you know, she had a Netflix contract too for a while too. That's what I'm saying.

[00:35:48] David Beckham was out there. Him and his Netflix documentary and stuff. I was like, yeah. You know. M.G.K. Tracy Ellis Ross is out there. Tracy Ellis Ross. Yeah. It was a lot of people. And I couldn't decide if these are Kevin Hart's friends or if this is just, like you said, paid actors to be in the building. But it just felt like it was the place to be. Shane Gillett is our host.

[00:36:15] But I want to say the big headline of the night that everybody's been talking about is the reunion of the Ops here. Kevin Hart roasted by his number one hater of all time, Cat Williams. Were you surprised to see Cat Williams into the building? Because you want to talk about a wrestling entrance? You know. He like, I was supposed to see a glass and popped out, right? It was very good. It was a good entrance for Kevin Hart. I mean, for Cat Williams. Yes. It was great.

[00:36:44] I mean, no, I wasn't expecting him there. I love how immediately he's like, I'm here for the money. And I'm like, as you should. The jokes, not jokes, the truths, the cat, was the beef squashed? I don't think the beef was squashed. I think Cat was like, I'm going to come out here. I'm going to say some mean things about this man.

[00:37:13] The crazy thing is, it wasn't even the meanest thing said on that stage. It was just like, oh my God. It was a literal roast. He is airing Kevin out here. And you could tell he was just going to come out and do his jokes and leave. It was Kevin who then afterwards grabs the mic and is like, oh, let's squash it, man. Let's squash it. Cat didn't say nothing. Cat just shook his hand in the life. They shook hands.

[00:37:43] Yeah, it feels like, you know. Yeah, I mean, there's definitely questions to be asked about how legitimate this beef squashing was. But to Kevin Hart's defense, or not that he needs it, Kevin Hart has never been a part of this beef. This beef has always been one. Cat Williams has been Kevin Hart's biggest hater for as long as I can remember. He has called him unfunny. He's called him a coon. He has also alluded to him in an industry plant.

[00:38:11] He's, you know, as recently as his appearance on Club Shea Shea, you know, not too long ago. So he's almost like he never misses an opportunity to take shots at Kevin Hart. And Kevin Hart has almost always taken the high road. There have definitely been moments where he has pointed out that maybe Cat Williams is not well. We've seen some things where Cat Williams did not have, you know, looked the best. He also, I mean, I'm with Kevin Hart on this one. Cat Williams is also a liar.

[00:38:40] You do not read 3,000 books a year, sir. You don't. There's no way. There's no, there are children's books, maybe. Maybe they can't. There's no way you're reading. Yeah, there's no way you're reading 3,000 novels. Every year I set a goal to read 50 books a year. Gina sets a goal to read 100 and she gets close. Like it's just not, 3,000? Who did the math?

[00:39:08] I think somebody did the math and said you'd have to be reading like. Yeah. It's just not, it's not a thing, y'all. This isn't a thing. Yeah. This isn't a thing. You can't. No. We're not entertaining Cat Williams, right? But I think that's the problem, right? When you are speaking so many truths, but then you lay saying that you read roughly eight and a half books a day. Eight and a half books. That's crazy. Right.

[00:39:38] And that's as me who is an avid reader. Right. But also we got jobs. Maybe, maybe he has time. He ain't got no job. You know, not to say that he's unemployed, but I'm saying like he ain't got no eight to five. I kind of sound like you said he was. No, no, no. What I mean is that, like LeBron said, that man wakes up every day and he's Cat Williams and we got to go to work still. You know, so I'll put it like that. So maybe if you got some time and you have a lot of money and stuff like that and you are doing like acting and, you know, things that you can take some time away to read.

[00:40:06] Maybe, but eight books a day, like substantial books a day is actually crazy. Um, so yeah. Yeah. But, but I agree that, uh, the beef, I think is still maybe up in the air. I mean, it's up to Cat Williams considering he started the beef. Um, but I thought he was very funny. I thought him coming for Kevin Hart, uh, and just coming out and doing his, his set was the highlight.

[00:40:31] And I've seen a lot of people talking about how it was the highlight because obviously people love Cat Williams. Uh, I think prior to Kevin Hart, Cat Williams was the guy, which is probably a lot of reason why Cat Williams is still a little salty about Kevin Hart coming in and, you know, stealing his job like the Brits. Um, but, uh, but overall, I think that was the most positivity I saw about the roast online. Mari, what did you think about the roast all in all?

[00:40:59] I mean, all in all, um, I mean, so with the roast, right? And I learned this from, from drag queens because of course I love drag queens. Um, Bob the drag queen in particular, because, uh, the drag race girls used to do haters roasts. They used to do like touring roast, uh, um, like shows. I'm so mad they stopped doing it before I, you know, was able to afford it.

[00:41:28] Um, but like Bob the drag queen always says like, when you're, when you go to a roast and you're in a room with like people who paid to go to a roast, everybody in that room is, um, agreeing to the social norms of a roast. Like everybody in that room is agreeing that in this room, we are going to say the craziest things.

[00:41:51] It is, you know, between the performers on the stage and you are agreeing that you want to be a part of that in a sense. And he always says like, when people then record that and put it on social media, it gets exposed to people who do, who did not sign that, that social contract as in, you know what I'm saying? Who do, do not want to be exposed to this stuff. And so that's always my thought process now when I'm going into roast is why I don't really watch roast.

[00:42:20] And I said it, um, when we talked, when we talked about funny AF, like, um, it, it's, it's just kind of like, it's always normally like lowbrow comedy. It's very low hanging fruit type stuff to me. So I went into this knowing that, and I mean, it's just roast just for me, I'm too woke for roast. You know what I'm saying? I truly, truly am. And that's okay. I know that.

[00:42:49] And I, and I, I signed up to watch this so we could talk about it. So I get the social contracts of, of, of roast, um, and all of that. I just know what jokes I like and what jokes I don't like. And so like online people are talking about certain jokes and stuff that they didn't find funny. And, and the whole aspect of the roast. My thing is it's a roast.

[00:43:18] They did what they came there to do, right? They did what they came there to do. And I think, um, somebody on social media said it, said it better, but like the whole Kevin part, the funny AF comedy, um, special really was to prime us for the roast. Cause remember the, the Nikki Glaser, you can say the most horrible shit and all that stuff.

[00:43:40] And, um, as much as I liked that type of comedy, I can come back over here and be like, yeah, this is, this is the reason why I don't, I don't really mess with comedians like that anymore. You know what I'm saying? So saying all that to say, I did find some stuff funny. Um, I'm pretty sure we'll, we'll get into it. Uh, some stuff I was like, Oh God. You know what I'm saying? Um, so it's just one of those things.

[00:44:08] It's that, that is, that is what this is. That is what, what it is. A roast is for comedians to say wild shit and you either like it or you don't, they still don't say it. Yeah. Yeah. Um, great points. I, I have watched a lot of roast in my life.

[00:44:36] Uh, when I was a wee lad watching a comedy central, I used to watch every roast. I'm talking about every roast. I would learn who the people were at the roast. Um, so like Justin Bieber's roast, Charlie Sheen's roast, Bob Saget's roast, Pamela Anderson's roast, Donald Trump's roast, Flavor Flay's roast, William Shatner's roast, Tom Brady's roast. I watched them all. I watched every last one of them. And you kind of learn who the same faces are.

[00:45:03] The people like Jeff Ross, uh, like, um, Lisa Lampanelli, Greg Giraldos, like these people who are going to come out and say these wild things. You kind of learn the stylings of a roast, the kind of jokes that are made. And so this to me was on brand for a roast, but like Mari said, as you get older and a little bit more woke, I think the jokes hit a little different. Uh, because I think nowadays the, the, the key to, I always will say this, the key to a roast is to be funny. If you are not funny, then all the jokes, no matter what you say, it's going to suck. Right.

[00:45:32] And the people are going to be offended by it. If it's not funny, if it's funny, people can overlook some of the stuff. The problem is that now in these times we have grown a lot more sensitive to some of the things that we used to let slide. Right. It used to just be commonplace to say wild things about people's identity, uh, whether it be their race, their sexuality, um, their size, you know, that kind of thing. So what I found was the jokes that hit harder for me now are the ones that make fun of something that you did as opposed to something that you are.

[00:46:01] So obviously, you know, in that list of roasts that I talked about, that I've watched a lot of those roasts were roasting white men. Uh, and so those roasts are easy for me to watch because I know no one's going to make any racist black jokes, or at least there'll be few. Um, because, uh, typically they might have a black person on the dais who might catch a stray here and there. Um, it is very clear that these writers of this roast were told to be racist. Uh, they said, do not take racism off the table.

[00:46:29] So, and I think some of the comedians weren't even okay with kind of doing it because we saw a lot of scrolling through the teleprompter for people where they would look up, see a joke and be like, no, no, no, I'm not saying that. You know, we've seen, I think several times somebody would be like, I'm not about to say anything about Regina Hall. I'm not about to say anything about Sheryl Underwood. You know, there would be moments where people were like, no, I'm not doing that.

[00:46:53] And I do think that's a big difference between what roasts used to be, where everybody said whatever the hell they wanted all the time. And it got real. So Chappelle, uh, so how does, so do they not, I, I assumed that if you're a comedian on that dais, you're writing your own roast jokes. Is that not the case? That is not the case. So sometimes they do write their own jokes, but there are also writers as well.

[00:47:22] Um, and so for instance, I think Shane Gillis is about to say something about Sheryl Underwood. He literally says, I didn't write that, you know, like I think they're, they were told to say certain things. Shane, so at one point he is the host. He says, uh, they told me to be racist. Um, so it's clear that we're giving instructions. He even reached out to Sheryl Underwood prior to, you know, to make sure that she was okay with him making fun of her husband.

[00:47:46] Um, another staple of roasts is that typically these days, at least with these big name celebrities, they will tell you what you can and cannot talk about. Um, Tom Brady very clearly had like rules about what you could say about him. And Kevin Hart had rules about what you could say about him. He said, do not talk about my kids. Um, and so, you know, they talk about him as a parent, but they never talk about his children. They clearly left his wife and Nico on the table as something that they can talk about.

[00:48:11] But you see, everybody handled it with class when it came to her, you know, it was like the jokes about her were like, oh, you fine. Oh, if Kevin wasn't here, matter of fact, we could just cut Kevin, you know, like things like that. But it wasn't. Or she's tall. He has to jump to kiss her. Right. But it wasn't punching down at her. So they, they do have rules and regulations for roasts. At least they do now. I don't know if they always did, but it was very clear that there were a few jokes that were like included by the writer's room.

[00:48:40] And at the end of the Netflix, um, uh, special, I believe it was, um, one half of Deesis and Miro. I think that's how you say their names. Uh, yeah. He was saying that, um, that there was a lot of black jokes and not a lot of right. Black writers, uh, Deesis was saying. So, um, just something to think about as well. Um, so yeah, so that's why to me, uh, it hit a little different because again, I'm black. Right.

[00:49:07] So I don't necessarily want to hear jokes about, you know, Kevin Hart being black or a Sheryl Underwood being black and all this other stuff when it's just because you black, I'm gonna make fun of you. I would prefer the jokes that are similar to like Kevin Hart. Tell me about this affair in Vegas that you had, or, you know, this very homophobic rant you went on or, you know, uh, these awful movies that you do, you know? So I think that's why it's hard for people to swallow. What do you think about that?

[00:49:34] Yeah, no, I, that is, that I, I get, thank you for enlightening me. Cause yeah. Cause I was like, because so again, the roast that I, every year on drag race, they normally do at least one roast competition on drag race. And like, I don't know again, if it's like, like you said, it's the community, right? Because that's doing the roast and stuff like that, because I love the drag race roast competition.

[00:50:03] Uh, they also do the, the reading competition, which is basically the same, the same as roasting, like, like being used to like queer shade and drag queens throwing shade and stuff like that. Like for some reason, I'm way more comfortable in that space than a space like this, but it's also because like with, with drag queen girls and they're, they're the same way. They're like, they're always like, okay, yeah, I'm fat. Say something else type thing. You know what I'm saying? Like it, it feels like it has to be smarter.

[00:50:32] Like it has to be, uh, uh, done with more tact because it is, like you said, it's just so easy to like all of those, those, those jokes that Tony Hinchcliffe rattled on about Lizzo. I'm like, Lizzo just got here. It's just like, you, you literally were just like, you fat, you black, you black, you black, you black, but like, is that, is that talent? Like I can talk about how big somebody is, you know what I'm saying?

[00:51:02] So it's just like, um, I, I, that was really interesting. I didn't realize that. Like, I, I, I know about tagging up. I, I figured in, in drag race, they only, they only write their stuff. Like they write their row stuff. They do, um, for the competition, they do, uh, talk to like Michelle or whoever the guests. I think Nikki Glaze, wasn't Nikki Glazer was on once? I'm sure. Um, yeah. Like they, they like help them tag it up and stuff like that.

[00:51:31] But, but as far as I know, they didn't have, they don't have people writing for them. But again, I think that is part of the competition of that, all of that. So I did not realize that there was whole writer's rooms for Rose for people to say, except for, I figured for, um, like, like Venus and Serena, Tom Brady, like people who aren't comedians, Draymond, I figured they got stuff written for them. Um, but I thought at least they might have like an overview of what they want to say.

[00:51:59] And then people will write it for them type thing. Yeah. Like the non-comedians, I was like, okay, I expect that. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Like you would think like Draymond has a group of writers. Right. But, um, even then just because he has some writers doesn't mean, you know, obviously not from Draymond, but like, if this is, you know, uh, somebody who was a white, uh, actor or something like that, then obviously your next, your next bet isn't let's go be racist. Right.

[00:52:26] Like, or at least that's not your instinct when you have these people, but when it's a black person on the dais, it seemed like that was on the table. I'm sure. Again, I'm sure Kevin Hart okayed that. Um, Michael Che came out on, uh, Instagram and said, uh, white guys and black people joke different. Black guys roast like, look at this nigga's shoes. White roasts are like slavery, math, slain teens, sex crime, slurs, family secrets. Uh, white guys don't give a fuck about their shoes. Yeah.

[00:52:51] Um, and so, um, yeah, it seems like he was on supposed to be one of the people who were on the roast and he actually, uh, pulled out of the roast, um, prior to going on. But I saw a few people kind of see it feeling uncomfortable with some of the content. Uh, overall, I thought it was a standard roast. Uh, but like I said, it did feel like the people were kind of like under, under the gun a little bit on like they, you have to do this, you know, as far as, uh, some of the

[00:53:17] things that we're saying, um, it starts off with Usher, uh, and his, uh, parody of let it burn. Uh, I didn't know Usher and Kevin Hart were friends in real life, but apparently they are. Did you know this? Did not know this. I was like, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Not funny to me, but sure. Yeah, exactly. I think it's like, you got to Usher performance. So that's kind of cool, but I don't know about funny. Um, we see Tom Brady back as a part of the bit.

[00:53:47] Um, we know Kevin. Yeah. Kevin was on the dais for the Tom Brady, uh, roast. And so, um, he comes back here at the hot points for all the things they talk about with Kevin Hart. Talk about being short. They talk about his affair, alleged affair in Vegas. They talk about ride along and Jumanji amongst his other credits. Uh, the rock obviously is a hot topic and also someone who makes a surprise appearance. Uh, Kevin's wife. Um, but like I said, he seemed like he was pretty okay with, uh, her coming up as a topic.

[00:54:16] His homophobic rant about smashing a doll over his hypothetical gay son's head. Uh, his absentee father and being an absentee father, uh, the riot comedy festival, uh, and I believe Saudi Arabia, the diddy party and his trash tequila. Uh, and so, um, the diddy parties. I didn't, I didn't know about that stuff. Well, I mean, he went to one according to him. He went to one party and Kat Williams was there. So there you go. Allegedly.

[00:54:46] Allegedly. Okay. Yeah. Well, that's what Kevin said, you know? Um, but yeah, those were the big, those were the big topics. Um, but if you there, he there, y'all both there. What was, I think, I think that's the point. Kevin Hart's like, I mean, Kat Williams is like Kevin be at the diddy parties and Kevin is like, I was at one diddy party and you were there too. Uh, and so it's kind of like, uh, uno reverse. Least assured. I'm taking you down with me. Um, you know, um, I thought that was a good joke.

[00:55:14] So other topics, of course, with the dais being there, black people were a topic. The crowd versus Draymond Green. Uh, Shane Gillis has special needs. Chelsea is a whore. Uh, she's also old and various other things that they could say about her. Jake Oakerson is fat. Tony Hitchcliffe is racist. You know who that was? Fuck that nigga. Sorry. My bad. That slipped. Cheryl Underwood is a loud black woman.

[00:55:42] Uh, Pete Davidson is blackish and has a lot of sex. And then Jeff Ross has cancer. Those were the hotspots for the day. Is anything anybody stand out to you as one of the standouts for, um, these people? Well, a few, but it's all women, of course. Um, Chelsea Handler. Oh my God. I was like Netflix. Alex, bring out that ring that Ronda Rousey and Gina Carino about to be in and just let Chelsea and Tony go.

[00:56:11] Because I was like that bad blood. I was like, give him Chelsea. Give him. Oh my God. The fact that she called everybody up there statutory rapist. I was like, thank you, Chelsea. Thank you. The fact that she would not, um, say anything about Regina, Regina Hall or Cheryl Underwood.

[00:56:35] Um, like literally just barb after barb after barb aimed at Tony Hinchcliffe. And I was like, yes. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. It was, it was good. That, that's how, I mean, for me, she, she, she said, I'm here to talk, talk for women in America and all around the world. And she, she went on, she went on Tony and Shane.

[00:57:01] Cause I didn't realize Shane was also a mega enthusiast apparently as well. So she went on. I don't know. That's what they made it seem like tonight that he was. Yeah. I, um, so Shane Gillis allegedly has not identified as a Republican. Um, but again, I think at this point where, um, it's a roast, so you call a white man racist if you can.

[00:57:31] Um, but I don't think he's ever been like, you know, like officially a right winger. Um, whereas, you know, uh, is clearly. Yeah. Oh yeah. Uh, they were on Shane neck. She said he looked like a steam dumpling. She also said he looked like Drew skin white face. Yeah. Um, yeah. So some fat shaming of Shane Gillis for sure. Uh, but for the most part, I think, yeah, Chelsea was able to avoid the blatant racism and still able to dunk on Kevin Hart appropriately. Um, she did even give him his flowers.

[00:58:00] So he's never really been gross with her. Like, uh, so many other men in Hollywood have been. And that was good to hear because we hear the opposite so many times. Uh, and I know Chelsea handler probably has dealt with so many people who suck. And so for her to be able to say that, um, I thought that looked good on Kevin. Um, I did like Lizzo. Uh, I don't think she was like the best roaster, but it looked like she was having a good time. And I would have never guessed Lizzo would have been on the day. It's for Kevin Hart. I know they were friends.

[00:58:30] Again, are we making the right? Like, are we making this stuff up? Like, I don't, I don't know. Like what's happening? I don't know. I don't remember. Uh, I, I don't. Is she from Philly? No. Like, I don't know how they know each other. Yeah. Um, and she had the little people behind her. I was like, okay, girl.

[00:58:52] Uh, um, and again, I'm like, did they just, was she out there before she did the musical thing? Cause I, I feel like I didn't see her until after she came out for her performance. Yeah. I think that might've been a surprise. Uh, or at least a surprise to us. I'm sure Kevin knew she was there. Um, cause she came from over our. Oh, okay.

[00:59:19] Cause it felt like she was just there for Tony Hinchcliffe to, again, to make fat black woman jokes at her. Cause she, she laughed at the first few and then she was like, oh, like, cause he kept going back to her. I was just like, damn, do you know her? Like, this is for you to be? Y'all friends? Yeah. Um, yeah, she, her new album, uh, just dropped. Bitch is what it's called. She said she named it after Kevin. Uh, but it didn't look like she had a lot of fun. She was laughing at the jokes.

[00:59:45] Um, you know, I think, but yeah, she caught a lot of the, the fat jokes, you know, the, the low hanging fruit there for, uh, for Lizzo. Um, let's see who else stood out. Jeff Ross really had me kind of on, on edge because I did not know he survived cancer recently. And I didn't realize that either. Yeah. I was like, am I too woke for the roast? Because damn cancer, we laughing at this man, cancer diagnosis. Like, come on, man.

[01:00:12] I thought people were kind of, they were pretty respectful about that, but yeah, I didn't realize he had cancer. I love that he was dressed as Eddie Murphy and would do the weird dance music. That was pretty good. I was normally, I don't like Jeff Ross. Uh, his comedy is not normally for me, but I thought he did pretty good this time around. Um, yeah. Uh, I will say Regina Hall.

[01:00:38] So like sometimes with roast, it's like, do you like when people change it up again? I did not like when usher, that's your song, whatever, but Regina Hall channeling, uh, doing the bit where she's channeling Kevin's mom the whole time was actually amazing. I thought it was so funny. She managed, I was like, I was like, is she only going to roast him? Cause it's his mom, but she still managed to roast like saying Chelsea, like all your, your kids are up here.

[01:01:08] It's hilarious. I was like, cause it's that abortion. Like it was, she did such a good job. I thought. Um, and they said she might've been like a late addition. Um, and she, we, I, we do know that they are friends. They know each other. Yeah. They, they know each other. So, um, I thought, I thought she did great.

[01:01:34] And of course, Sheryl Underwood got up there and just, I mean, like, again, that's talent going off teleprompter, really just going at the, going, dishing it all back, um, to Shane and Tony and, um, you know, and her saying like freedom of speech, we're all saying these things or bring them all together type thing. I was like, yeah, except for that guy. We don't like that guy. Like Tony Hinchcliffe is like a horrible person.

[01:02:03] Y'all like, I don't know if y'all like really know that, but he like truly is. And his set, I was just like, oh, okay. We're just, we are literally, we are just literally going to say the meanest stuff we can because we, cause you can, you can get away with it. Oh, yay. It's a roast. Um, I was side eyeing Sheryl Underwood. I ain't going to hold you. Um, I didn't know she was a lifelong Republican lady. I saw that too.

[01:02:33] She was, but she did campaign. Um, she did campaign for Barack and she's, she's been open against Trump. I do believe. I don't know. She's back to being a lifelong Republican, but she is a lifelong Republican. Yes, she is. Former president of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, uh, international president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. I was like, y'all have to be like, whatever. Um, but yeah, so I was side eyeing her a little bit, but you know, I was still not,

[01:03:02] you know, like I said, the racist jokes don't really hit for me. Um, I did enjoy the Draymond jokes, uh, for the most part, um, saying that basically, uh, his mom didn't know who his baby daddy, her baby daddy was. So she could, she couldn't decide who to name him after. So she went between Andre and Lamond and landed on Draymond. Um, I don't care. That was funny. Yes, it's racist. But I love Draymond. Yeah, me too. Me too. Draymond Green does sound like an ugly paint color though.

[01:03:30] I thought that was some of the Draymond jokes are really good. Um, I think somebody said he sounded like his name sounds like a wealthy cartoon duck. And, uh, I'll take it. I'll take it. Um, but he looked like he had a lot of fun. I obviously did not write his jokes either. Um, and I think another one of the standouts was, um, was Pete Davidson.

[01:03:53] I I'm still trying to figure out what his identifier is because it's like blackish, unproblematic man who has a lot of sex. Is that where they're getting at? With the big dick. You forgot the big dick. Yeah. With the big dick. Yeah. That was the chronically the big dick. Yeah. That, that is known. Yeah. And his dad died in nine 11. Um, right.

[01:04:18] When, when Chelsea Handler said that Pete Davidson is the moral compass, I, I almost spit out whatever I was drinking. It was so hilarious because like when she, and then she said it was been great to witness your growth because like he used to not be that. And the fact that that's him now, that was, that's, that's so, so cool to like really see, um, like his growth as an artist.

[01:04:46] And like you said at the beginning here, like some people, you know, don't change with the times and they wonder why they're being left behind. But he, he is, he has grown so much, um, from SNL and stuff like that. So it was good to see him here. And everybody pointed out he did not laugh at Tony Hinchcliffe's jokes. Oh yeah. Yeah. Uh, Pete, Pete's not loving it. He's a, he's, he's an ally. And I think, uh, he's a good dude. You know, I think, uh, also I'm pretty sure him and Kevin Hart are not friends.

[01:05:16] I think they are friendly. I think they know each other. Like, but I think he was very, he felt very blessed to be, uh, able to be a part of the roast. A lot of times these comedians are brought in to roast people, like people who are further in their career than them, uh, or people who have a bigger name than them. It's a lot, it's a place where a lot of comedians make a name for themselves at roasts. And so for Pete Davidson to be able to roast Kevin Hart, it looked like he felt honored to be there. And he was really going to appreciate the moment by not being ridiculous.

[01:05:41] Uh, but like he, like he even apologized to Cheryl Underwood mid joke, uh, because I'm pretty sure he didn't write that joke. He was about to say. Yeah. And, and, and that's, and that's the thing too, because as far as I know, uh, I don't think Kev, Kevin knows Tony Hinchcliffe. I'm going to keep coming back to him. Uh, because like you said, this is a Netflix production. So I'm, I'm wondering if Pete has something coming up with Netflix.

[01:06:11] I know you can Google that, but I do know, uh, Tony Hinchcliffe has killed Tony on Netflix. So the way that, that Tony ended his set, I was like, oh, he like, I don't think Kevin knows this guy at all. So there, there, there were people that I was like, okay, there are actual people who are here, who know Kevin and who are Kevin's best friends, like the rock. And then there are people who are here to promote, like you said, Lizzo, you know what I'm saying? Like, cool.

[01:06:39] So it, it is what it is. Netflix, um, had a big pocket. I mean, they got Kat Williams. So, so people are going to be there. The audience is probably paid too. I don't know about that. I don't know about that. I think the front rows, I think the front rows, I think the front rows. I think Netflix probably flew him out and took care of it and just said it's a free roast. I think that, I don't know if they paid them. Um, it's Kevin Hart.

[01:07:07] He got some, Kevin Hart, Kevin Hart got a lot of big friends, you know? So I'm sure if he said, come to my roast, you know, I don't know if JLo is showing up, but I do know, you know, like there, he could, he could a list his way into like a decent crowd for sure. Um, he's been in so many movies that he could, you know, like just based off of his cast alone, I have to keep you all right. Um, uh, the, the only other person I really wanted to flag up. Oh, well, I mean, I think it was a big J.

[01:07:36] Uh, he said, um, is it Oakerman? How do you say his name? Yeah. Big J. I have no idea who that is. Yeah, me neither. I have no idea who that is. Apparently he's been friends with Kevin for a long time. And he told us, he told a story about how, um, Kevin had, uh, he was down on his luck and Kevin tried to give him $10,000, uh, to help him out. And, uh, he was talking to their mentor, Keith Robinson, who he does joke about being dead,

[01:08:05] who was out in the crowd laughing at that very joke. Um, and, um, he talks about how he talked to Keith Robinson was like, man, I can't take this money. That's $10,000. It's such a lot of money. And Keith, and Keith Robinson's like, no, it's actually an insultingly low amount of money for what y'all have been through. This man just dropped four movies. He could give you more than $10,000. I thought that was very funny. Um, and then last but not least the rock Kevin Hart's, um, uh, bro, man's AKA as according to, uh, cat Williams, a man that he has sex with on the low.

[01:08:35] Uh, what did you think about Dwayne, the rock Johnson here as our closer? Of course. I thought this was great. I think I like, you can't close on cat Williams. You got to close on. Yeah. You got to close on Ken's best friend because you could feel it. You could, you could feel him making the, the cockle jokes. He was, he was the only person that really like kind of went with the wife. Um, he's always entertaining.

[01:09:03] I was sitting there like, I think the rock could have wrote some of these because this is what, like, if you watch wrestling, this is the, this is the, you know, this is, yeah, this isn't Dwayne Johnson. This is the rock who's here presenting this roast and he's doing it just like his heel rock self. And so it was great for me. It was great. I thought, I thought he did a really good job. And again, this is how you write jokes that aren't like offensive.

[01:09:29] He, I mean, the, even with the, um, like, Oh, Kevin is short and black. It was like, Oh, you're short and black, like a dildo or a, you're tattooed on my dick. You're like the same side. Like, yeah. Still pretty funny. Still like not, not striking a whole group of people. Just kidding.

[01:09:52] Well, the rock feedback about one of the jokes he made, uh, specifically to Draymond Green. He said, uh, it's like, uh, your name is just somebody adding a D to the first letter of, to your, to your name. Your name would have been Raymond, but they added a D and then he called it retarded. Uh, and then he went on to say, yeah. Then he went on to say that speaking of the R word and that he continued.

[01:10:18] And so he has been getting feedback about, um, using that word, uh, because again, you know, it's a, it's a, it's a, uh, thin line to walk at a roast, right? Like I think he gets away with retarded and then he leaves it alone. But I think to go on then and then go to say, you know, the R word, which people have found very offensive. Um, I think there was even a moment where Cheryl Underwood calls out Shane Gillis about almost

[01:10:46] saying the N word, you know, um, you know, it was like, there's a way to have the jokes and be respectful. Uh, and you know, there's a way to disrespect and still not, not attack someone's identity or a group of people's identity. And so, yeah, the rock was a little drunk. This is not me making an excuse for him because, you know, Hey, whatever. But he was, he was very drunk. I actually thought his set went a little long and I don't think it was, I thought for me, the rock wasn't that great.

[01:11:14] Um, because you could tell he was kind of going off, like you said, I think you could tell he was kind of going off script. I was like, I think if you said to the script, you'd be all ready to, uh, be a little bit better. But overall, um, it seemed like a good celebration of Kevin Hart. They were all very complimentary of him. Uh, you know, despite all the things they said, they were all able to go back and talk about his work ethic and his professionalism. Um, and you know, despite the things that he has said and done that makes him kind of, you know, like, you know, a divisive character, uh, you know, some of the problematic things

[01:11:43] that he's done in the past. Um, they do sound like they really do appreciate and respect him as a colleague and a friend, at least the ones who did know him in real life. And so, um, I liked it. I liked overall, it was fine. I wouldn't watch it again, but it was fine. Yeah, exactly. And you're right. You're, you're, you're right. And it is, it is sad that they're bringing that word back. They're bringing, they're bringing it back. Yeah, they're trying to force that one on us. They want us to say it so bad.

[01:12:12] And I'm like, I'm good, y'all. I don't need it. I don't need it. It's no, thank you. Um, like it's unfortunate. And that, and that's the thing, right? Like, like you said, it's like, again, what, like, where do you draw the line? Um, you didn't, you have not told me how you felt about Tony Hinchcliffe. I mean, I don't like Tony Hinchcliffe. That's the sentence, right?

[01:12:40] So I'm one of those people, if I don't like you, there's not much you can say to make me laugh anyway. Like, you know, like at that point you become the bitch eating crackers, you know, and he, to me, he is the bitch eating crackers. He walk in the room, I'm like, oh, here comes this guy, you know, like, oh my God, here he go. So, so I think Tony Hinchcliffe's comedy works for people because of the way he delivers his jokes. They're very fast. Um, it's very like, bow, bow, bow, bow, bow. So before you can recover, he's hit you with another one and another one, another one.

[01:13:07] And you can't really focus in on any particular thing that he has, um, said because he's already throwing the next haymaker at you. That said, I've seen a lot of roasts. I've heard a lot of racist jokes. Nothing he said really like broke me. Um, but again, oh, I did like one of his jokes. He said, um, uh, I'm trying to figure out how I was sitting next to Cheryl Underwood and she's been playing the drums this whole time. And then look over and it's like the roots.

[01:13:38] I'll give him that one. But other than that, like, you know, like I, I could say that he, he sucks because he does, but like, it's not, it's not, it's not for me. Tony Hinchcliffe is not a comedian for me. Yeah. I mean, all in all, roasts aren't for me unless they're drag queens. You know, like unless they're drag queens, I don't really. And I, and I even like, we talked about it.

[01:14:06] I even like the funny AF roast. And, but that was hard. Cause again, we, we had a white woman drop the F F word like hard. And I was like, yeah. And you even then were like, yeah, exactly. Yeah. Let me pry a little bit. So is it the drag queen roast to me? I, and this is me just speculating. So you correct me if I'm wrong, but is it that they are joking on their own community?

[01:14:33] And so within their community, there are things that they can say about each other, but if they got super racist, you would be able to say, I didn't like that. That's racist. Exactly. At least on drag race, it race is like never been a thing. Like they, and that's what I mean. It's like, they, they find ways to roast people about different things. Like you said, kind of like Michael Che and the shoes thing.

[01:14:58] Like, like that is not, they, they don't bring up lynchings and in words and stuff like that. You know, it's, it's, I don't be lynched on a bonsai tree. Like what? Like, you know, I don't, but yes, it's, it is mostly that it's like, we're all in community here together. We can say certain things to each other because we're all in community.

[01:15:26] And again, on top of that, they are still trying to be a little bit more high level if they can. There is the, there, there's always a size joke. There's always a fat joke, a size joke. Always. You cannot get away with, with that. But yeah, it, yeah, I, it's not, it, it never feels. Yeah. I think it's just a community thing.

[01:15:55] It's a community thing. It's one community that are with each other. We, when you, there's like, why are you saying that in front? We, we a mixed company. Stop. Don't say that. You know what I'm saying? And Chappelle, Tony used the word get away too many times for my liking. Doom and time for my liking. You know? Yeah. So yeah. Yeah. I think that's what it is.

[01:16:20] I think I want to make you, I want to make you watch like the, I think the, the, in the recent memory, the best roast was the all-star seven all winners season roast. And I want to get your opinion on that, that roast. Well, you know, I am a well-read individual and I actually watched that season of Drag Race. Okay. That's why I thought so. I was there for the million. R.I.P. the homie.

[01:16:50] R.I.P. R.I.P. the homie. But no, I don't remember, I don't remember the ins and outs of it, but I do, I will check it out. We can talk about it. That's nothing. That's nothing. Yeah. Yeah. But that's it. That was the roast of Kevin Hart. You know, mixed reviews from the people watching it and definitely some question marks here on our panel. But again, we watched it. So if you didn't want to, you didn't have to. And now, you know, our opinions about it and everything we thought about it. And you know that we are looking for more content.
