[00:00:20] Hey, what's up fam? Welcome back again to Recap Kickback. It's me, your host Chappelle, back again to talk to you about another movie or TV show or music or whatever it is to talk about, but we're going to make sure it's blackity black as can be here on RecapKickback.com and with me to talk about Nemesis on Netflix. It's Mari Forth. Mari, welcome back.

[00:00:42] Yes, we're back. And, you know, we're testing the waters here of a very, what's the word? It's a show that I've heard so many different reviews of that I was like, F it. I guess I got to watch it, you know? So I'm glad that we're here. I'm glad to be back talking about whatever we want. So this is fun.

[00:01:09] Yep. We're going to have a good time talking about Nemesis. It is one of the top shows on Netflix right now. And a lot of people have had opinions about it. And so Mari said, Hey, why don't we watch it and form our own opinions? And so today, Mari and I have watched episodes one and two of Nemesis. And we'll be talking about that to help us determine if you listeners at home, but even us, if we should be watching Nemesis. Okay. And so this podcast will help you determine that because we're going to run through, you know,

[00:01:38] full review of episodes one and two, who to watch, what's going on, what the drama is and, you know, where do we see it going as we, if you do decide to continue watching it. So if you've already seen Nemesis, let us know in the comments here on our YouTube page, youtube.com slash at Recap Kickback. If you are not watching us here on YouTube, hopefully you found us on the podcast feed and you've already subscribed, Recap Kickback.com slash subscribe.

[00:02:05] But if not do that and join us over here on YouTube, because it's where we have a lot of our content. Sometimes we play clips, we play videos, we got games on here. Some from way back when we haven't done a game in a while, but we do different things on the YouTube page to keep it fresh. So make sure you're subscribed and tuning into all of our Recap Kickback content. If you are new here, Mari, how are the cup sales going?

[00:02:30] Cup sales are going pretty good, but of course they can always go better. If you want a custom cup, just like these Thrones themed ones that we're holding. I can't wait 10 seconds of that so we don't get monetized.

[00:02:50] You can go to my shop. You can go to MariCrafts2Much.BigCartel.com. I've been working on the site all week. So coming up, I will have Interview with a Vampire themed cups.

[00:03:09] So by the time we cover Interview with a Vampire and House of the Dragons, there will be both of those themed cups on there. So, but you can always get a custom cup and put whatever you want to on there. If you don't want booked themed cups, if you don't want TV show themed cups, if you don't want reality TV show cups, because right now I have a lot of Survivor 50 cups flying off the shelf.

[00:03:37] Those are what I'm selling right now since that just ended. If you don't want any of those, I can do any custom cup. Just buy the custom cup, reach out to me and we'll work one-on-one and I'll make you your own special, unique cup. So it's been so fun. Yeah. It's been definitely fun. And the funnest thing about it, like, yes, you know, yes, I'm selling cups, you know, money, woo-hoo-hoo.

[00:04:04] But the biggest thing is just getting inspiration to make cups, you know what I'm saying? Just to have fun and be creative. So please order so you can give me ideas to make your cups one of a kind. Yeah. And Mari, you haven't said this part out loud, but it's the quiet part. So I'll say it. Interview with a vampire starts in two weeks. Literally. It does. In two weeks. It feels like it's next week. It's so close. It is so close. Yes.

[00:04:34] Interview with a vampire with House of the Dragon right there on its tail. And then, of course, we got to fit in our other content too. Where are we going to find the time, Mari? Oh, I don't know. I don't know. You'll know I'll be here for Interview and Thrones. Yeah. The rest, you got to figure that out. This is your channel. Ooh. Okay. No, no, that's a good point. Maybe, listen, we got a couple weeks. People, let us know in the comments.

[00:05:01] If Mari is busy talking about Interview with a Vampire and Game of Thrones, putting her, you know, her massive book knowledge to work over there. We don't want me to talk about in the meantime when I don't have Mari. Do I need to bring in some guests? What are we thinking? Do we need the reality TV coverage? Do we need to go to some movies, maybe some classic movies? We got a little time on our hands. So let me know what we should be doing this summer while Interview with the Vampire and House of the Dragon are going on. Anything else before we jump into Nemesis episodes one and two?

[00:05:33] No, no. I mean, how was your week? I'm like pushing this off as much as I know. Oh my God. Mari, I just, I'm sorry. I just realized June 28th, BT Awards. You're not going? Yes. We do have that as well. You're not going to talk to me about the BT Awards too? Ain't that the same night as House of the Dragon and Interview with the Vampire? No, no, no. House of the Dragon is June 21st. They are all on the same night. So we will have to figure that out. All on a Sunday.

[00:06:04] We'll have to figure that out. But, yeah. Yeah. That means y'all should be heavily subscribing during June. Like, I want those subscription numbers to go up. We are going to be working triple, triple hard bringing you all this content. So if you are already subscribed to us, which I'm hoping you are, maybe you accidentally found this and forgot to subscribe, make sure you subscribe. But also tell a friend to subscribe because that's the easiest way to support. Like, for real. It's free. It helps us.

[00:06:34] It does help us. Yeah. Subscribe, share the podcast, all that good stuff. Oh, one more programming note. If you follow my personal account on Twitter, what are you doing? Get off of Twitter and come to Blue Sky and follow Recap Kickback on all social media platforms. You can follow Recap Kickback on Twitter, but I prefer if you come do it on Blue Sky or even join our Facebook page, RecapKickback.com slash Facebook, where you can get some of our posts. I promise I'm going to do better posting in there. It's just having to post on so many platforms is getting so daunting.

[00:07:04] Why don't you just join me on Blue Sky? Because if you are following my personal account, you might be getting harassed by the Chappelle Bot 3000 is what I call it. I have been hacked. If you know me, you know I don't even use that Twitter account like that. So it's out there just wilding on its own. But if you got a DM, take it as a sign that you need to come follow Recap Kickback on other platforms and leave that Twitter place alone. But yes, so beware.

[00:07:33] If at Chappelle's underscore show at you DMs you, ignore that person. That ain't me. I would be sending all my contacts through Recap Kickback. There you go. Sounds good to me. All right. Now, let's talk about Nemesis. Now, as we discussed, Nemesis is the most recent, I think, Netflix original cop drama that premiered on May 14th. And this crime drama has been getting some mixed reviews.

[00:08:03] I was not, I think I was kind of, I was planning on watching it, obviously, because, you know, that's what we do here. But I just, I wasn't in a rush, especially because, like I said, the reviews were coming in a little shaky. It did seem like some people were saying, this is awful. And other people were like, oh, no, I'm really enjoying this. And so the truth has to be somewhere in the middle, Mari, right? Right. People were saying, oh, this is awful. And then it was like number one on Netflix for like four days. And then, and I was seeing other people like, oh, that's great. And I was just like, what is happening?

[00:08:32] Like, I literally was so confused. It felt like, like whiplash because two seconds I'm like, oh, people are saying it's bad. Nevermind. I'm not going to watch it. Then I just saw a whole bunch of, no, this is good. I don't know what y'all are talking about. And so I was like, when you get that much mixed reviews and when everything is like, what's the word? Starts with a D. When it, when it's like that, it's the word. Starts with a D. Anyways.

[00:09:00] When, when, when you, when it causes that much conversation, I have to check it out. Like I need to kind of know where it falls because now my interest is peaked. And that's why they say like, no, no press is bad press. Right. Right. Right. Because if people weren't talking about how bad it was, we wouldn't be watching it. Right. And if people weren't talking about how good it was, we won't be watching it. Right. You got to hype this stuff up. At least you watched it. I think one of our mission statements here on Recapicate Back is that we're going to talk about the black stuff. You know, if it gets 50 views on our channel, then guess what? We got 50 views.

[00:09:29] But somebody got to highlight it because hopefully it makes other people go and check out these things. And then maybe we get more black content. So you take the bad, but then you also get the good stuff too when it comes around. Most recently, Ari and I had talked about Is God Is, which is a great movie that I enjoyed. And so you can catch our review here on our podcast. But, you know, the more people talk about it, hopefully it gets a little boost from everybody talking about it. And then, of course, I love boosters in some theaters as well.

[00:09:57] You know, we got to support these black films and, you know, black-led shows whenever we can. So we are going to dive into these two episodes. If you've watched further than that, then obviously you'll know more than us. But we won't get into any huge spoilers for the season because we've only watched episode one and two. Now, this show was created by Courtney Kemp. I believe she started working on the Power franchise. I believe she's one of the creators of that.

[00:10:27] And so when I saw that, Mari, to me, that made the tone of this show make a lot of sense. Like it feels very power-adjacent to me. Okay, I did hear that. I did hear that this was power-adjacent. And then I thought it was weird that there's like so many people from Insecure and so many people from The Wire in it as well.

[00:10:55] That does make some sense to tonally. Right. Because it's a crime drama. Yeah. But it's very, like I said, it's black, but it's kind of got this hood filter over it, right? Like even the cops are kind of a little ratchet.

[00:11:18] You know, our main character here, who is Matthew Law's character, Isaiah Styles. He is a homicide division lieutenant at the LAPD. Right. But you wouldn't know that if you just caught him just like outside of the badge. Not that he really ever takes it off. But there are just times where you forget that this man is a cop just by the way he handles himself outside of his actual job.

[00:11:46] Oh, you mean walking around in a LeBron James Lakers jersey or like what looked like a bathing apes hoodie at a crime scene? I was like, what is this? Like, what is happening? And he's a lieutenant, Chappelle. Like, he should be sitting his butt behind a desk. Like, legit. Like, he's way too hands-on for me. And even when, yeah. But anyway, sorry.

[00:12:15] Let me not get into it. But like, yeah. It was weird. Like, yeah. It's one of those things where I was like, the cops are, why is the cop so hood? Like, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know how to explain it. It was very interesting, his character, to say the least, to me. Mm-hmm. And we'll get into more of that. Now, that is Matthew Law.

[00:12:45] Now, Matthew Law, Mari, do you recognize him from anything else? Yeah, this is O'Shawn from Abbott Elementary. Mm-hmm. For our Recap Kickback faithfuls, who knows that Gia and I have been covering our Abbott Elementary since season two over here on Recap Kickback. I was very happy to see O'Shawn. I didn't know that, like, I assumed, obviously, that he's an actor. But I didn't know when the next time I was going to see him in something outside of Abbott. Right. He has a few television credits.

[00:13:13] I believe he was in The Pains, Tyler Perry's The Pains. He also, you know, has been longest running, it looks like, in Abbott Elementary. And also, Tyler Perry's The Oval recently canceled The Oval. I think. I think it's canceled. I don't know. TBD on Tyler Perry's The Oval. Is it? I think with BET Plus kind of being up in the air, I don't think we know where that stands. Well, it's done. Yeah, it's done. It's done. But where does that leave these shows?

[00:13:41] And so maybe we will see more of him in the future. But yeah, very happy to see him as a lead role here in Nemesis. Lead across from Ilan Noel, a.k.a. Coltrane Wilder in here, from Insecure. Okay. Yes. Who, Daniel? This is Daniel. Yeah. Who, I mean, I don't know, Chappelle. Like, I know we're going to go through the whole thing.

[00:14:09] But I just want to know how you want to do this. Because I think the main, my main thoughts is, and why the people are probably here, why they clicked on this video, is because from everything that I heard about why the movie was so bad, it landed on the two leads, right? Ooh, okay. Go on. Okay. You didn't hear this? Okay. No.

[00:14:35] So, Ilan, is that how you say it? Noel. Elon. A.k.a. Daniel. Elon. Yeah. Okay. Elon. Yeah. Amazing. Just amazing. Like, this role of Coltrane, which is a weird name. Okay. Johnny Coltrane. All right. Um, it fits him. It fits him like a glove. He basically, he's, he's a, like a smooth talking heist.

[00:15:02] He's, he's the leader of a heist gang. He, he's the leader of a heist gang who, um, who is trying to go legit because they always are. Again, flashbacks to power. Like. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, he, he assembles a crew and they do like robberies. They, they normally do well planned out high stakes robberies and, and we're introduced to him during a robbery.

[00:15:29] So he's very smooth, very debonair, very calculated, just very good. Matthew Law's character. Yes. On the other hand, or as we just talked about, Oh, Sean, uh, as Lieutenant styles, he is like a, a really gruff LAPD Lieutenant who is like obsessed with busting cases.

[00:15:52] He, he, he thinks he's like the smartest person in the room and he's like a, a, like a bulldog. Like he, he wants to solve the case and it's often at the detriment to his, his family. Um, we do meet his wife, Gabrielle Dennis, shout out to her. Yes. Yes. Queen. A black baby sketch show and so many other great, great roles. And like his, his family life, like you can, you can juxtapose, uh, their family lives.

[00:16:21] And where I saw the most criticism of this show was in Matthew Law's acting. And, um, I thought that the criticisms were valid, but I wasn't quite sure if it was his acting or the direction they wanted to, to take with the character. I wasn't sure.

[00:16:45] Um, because he, like, we always get the, like, this is not new to the cop genre. There's a cop who's overzealous. He overdoes it. He, he, like, he puts everything, um, puts the case before everything. And he's, like, cussing people out. And it, but, like, this felt too much. And I was like, is it the writing or is it his acting?

[00:17:14] And I, I don't know where I land on that. So I want to hear your thoughts maybe first on the acting portion of it. Uh, see, I didn't find. Right, right, right. Like, we watched two episodes. So, you know, I don't want to just, like, jump in on his acting and, you know, we, we're so early on. So maybe it does get better and or worse at times after this. But there were two episodes. I didn't really have an issue with the acting. I didn't believe the character because of who the character is.

[00:17:41] You know, uh, we will find out is, uh, like, like you said, he's a gruff cop, but not in the same way that we get gruff cops before, you know, like grizzled veteran cop been on the, uh, like seen it all, you know, kind of done it all. This cop, he is so crime adjacent, you know, his dad being a criminal, his, uh, just now deceased brother being a former criminal as well. Um, and so because of that, he's kind of got a criminal edge to him.

[00:18:10] Everything he does is like, like you said, a little bit more hood than you, you're a typical cop, right? It's just the way he's acting and presenting himself. He's not acting like a lieutenant. And not to say that these cops don't exist, but even them, I don't believe them. Right. Like I just, after a while, I'm kind of like, why are you, why are you acting like this? You don't have to. And for him, it's kind of where I am. Like, uh, at some point he was able to move up the rat, the ladder of the ranks of this, uh, at this police state. I mean, with the LAPD and right.

[00:18:39] Not just any police department, the LAPD to the point where everybody's begging him to just sit down somewhere so they can, they're like, please stop acting like this. So we can promote you. Everybody is saying you're next up, but he just can't find it in his body to let these cases go. The ones that he's really like, uh, like, you know, just a nose for him. He's determined to, to find them out at the detriment of his entire family. Uh, you know, he's neglecting his wife. He's neglecting his child.

[00:19:08] He's estranged from his, his dad from a number of reasons, but yeah, he's so, he's so much of a cop that like, you could kind of imagine how that would look, but for him to be so much of a cop, he doesn't act like that at all. You know, he acts like somebody that would rather be in the streets than actually doing this. It's almost like he's in a fight with himself. Like his, his dad is telling him like, you're just like me. You're just like your brother. We know you're, you're one of us.

[00:19:36] And his body is like, no, I might be one of y'all, but I'll never be one of you. You know? So I don't know. It felt like to me, the character himself is not somebody that I can find myself rooting for very easily. I like that. Yeah, exactly. It's like the, yeah, the character, he, he's not a rootable character. That's kind of what it kind of boils down to. Maybe it's because he, he, he flounces the rules of the law while trying to be the law. It just doesn't, it, it, it's kind of like annoying.

[00:20:05] It's like, dog, calm down. Like that's what it's like, everybody, like you said, it's like, everybody's around him. It's like chill. So, but we do know in the first two episodes that it seems like he has that battery in his back because he, it seems like his brother may have been his partner at one point or was it his partner? Cause it seemed like his brother, it seemed like his brother was a cop. Yeah. His brother was a cop.

[00:20:31] So his brother, it seemed like his brother may have been his, his, his partner or something at the time, but he comes up on his brother who has been shot by some criminals and his brother is gone. And he blames his dad for his brother's death. We do know, like you said, his dad, I think he said his dad was, went to prison for a long time. His dad was in like, really, it seems like he was wrapped up in really street like gangs or something. And he blames his brother's death on his dad.

[00:21:01] We haven't watched far enough to figure out why, especially now that his brother was a cop. I'm wondering if it was like a departed situation where his, his dad like made him join the cops so that he could be like a dirty cop or something. I don't know. So I do plan on, I will say up top here, I do plan on finishing it because at this point I do want to see like where it goes or whatever. But that was the, that was like the main criticism. It was his, his acting.

[00:21:30] But I do think like now that you're, you mentioned it, I think it might just be the writing of the character, the writing, but yeah, the character itself was just not, not, not fun, not, not fun at all. Like he left his, he, he went to spend a day with his son who has to be like 15 or 16. And he pulls out his, his police radio. He hears some, a call on the radio. It ends up like abandoning his son and told his son to get Uber.

[00:22:00] Like he's, he's a police lieutenant who can't delegate. Like, what are we doing here? You know what I'm saying? Like he has to be the person who solves the crime. You don't have to be, you, you, you don't have to be. It's like, he again thinks he's the smartest person in the room and not in an Alex Cross type of way. Yeah. And, and even Alex Cross is sometimes you'd be looking at Alex Cross like he's crazy. This time, I think I was looking at him like he was crazy the entire time. You know, uh, there are definitely moments where I took his side in specific things,

[00:22:29] especially with him and his dealings with his son. And there are definitely a couple of times where I'm like, all right, now chill out. Uh, your dad is a cop. This is what cops do. But on the other hand, it's like, but also why are you acting like this? You know, I think there was a moment where his, uh, his son is talking about, uh, his grades in class or something. And the, his dad goes, oh, what you want me to pull out the burner on him? And just like reaches for his gun. And is that, is that funny? Like you, like the, the cop being like, what you want me to do?

[00:22:58] Threaten your teacher with violence. Like, he was like, all right, but Hey bro, chill out. You know? Like, so it's like, it's a weird because I mean, if he was a criminal, I'd be like, Oh, look at criminals doing criminal things, but this is like, you know, like, all right. That's, that's, that's, it's weird coming from you, you know? So it's very funny, but I like the way the show is, um, kind of playing off these two characters being so different. So detective styles is, um, somehow the less buttoned up of the two of them.

[00:23:28] Elon's character, uh, Coltrane, he's like a type A, uh, perfectionist. Everything is a certain way. He doesn't make mistakes. That's one of his like running, um, identifiers throughout. They're like, Hey, that guy doesn't mess up. He's very strict about the rules and he does things a certain way because he takes this thing seriously. And that's why he's been so successful. Whereas it looks like, um, uh, um, uh, styles detective styles is more likely to go outside

[00:23:57] of the lines to break the rules and stuff. And so I think that it's interesting because you don't see that often where the cop and the, um, the cop and the criminal kind of switch places or switch almost like temperaments. But I think that it's more, like I said, more kind of the shades of power. I think ghost, his characters more like a, a type rule follower, you know, ghost does things a certain way so that they don't have to, so things don't get out of control, you know? And so I think they really are playing on that archetype and using detective styles

[00:24:25] as a way to kind of juxtapose those two things. Yeah. It's, um, it's textbook. Like we want you to kind of root for the criminal. And that's what it feels like. And that's probably what they want us to feel like in those, these first two episodes. And I wouldn't be surprised if like, as the series go on, when they'll realign the, it'll shift and, you know, we are fully on the side of the quote unquote good guys, the cop. And, and, but exactly.

[00:24:53] We see, um, Coltrane, we're, we're introduced to him, like we're doing a, a Halloween robbery of a Halloween party robbery. And he does it so smooth and so quickly that five minutes it's that whole, um, oceans 11 of it all, you know, each person. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He has a crew of, of, of three people. It's him and three people.

[00:25:19] And on that first one, we see him bring his lady who was, who was in on it. I think her name was Brandy. Right. Um, also black. Ebony. Sorry. Yes. Ebony. Yes. Which, um, right. I just thought of the blackest name, uh, Ebony who that, that, um, actress Cleopatra Coleman. I don't believe that I've seen her in many things. She's apparently Australian. Um, oh, she was in Clipped.

[00:25:49] Uh, she was, she was in, she played Vivian, uh, Stiviano in Clipped. I gotta finish that. Oh, yeah. We talked about Clipped here on Recap Keep Back if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, you sure did. You sure did. Yes. With Jason Reed. Um, so, uh, yeah, I, I, I am not familiar with her, but she played a really good, uh, she did a really good job, especially in this opening scene. And it's that whole, we're the good guy robbers.

[00:26:17] We only see him stealing from like really rich people. Mm-hmm. By the time we get to the second robbery, this, uh, jewelry store robbery, even though they end up killing two people, we're still kind of like, oh, but they didn't want to kill them. You know what I'm saying? Like it was, it was a screw up and, and we're still like on his side in a sense through these first two episodes.

[00:26:41] Um, and so I, I, I definitely think, uh, Elin is killing this role. It's so good. It's just perfect for him. Um, you know, he, he, he stepped out of his Daniel of, of, of, of, of, and is into this, the smooth talker, almost ghost type of role. So, um, uh, criticism aside, I think both of them as the leads are doing what they're supposed to be doing.

[00:27:11] I think they're evoking the emotion we're supposed to be feeling. Yeah. Yeah. I also think that, you know, not to get too deep into colorism, but I do think that it is very interesting that like the protagonist is a light-skinned man, but he's also kind of like the, like, uh, almost like unhinged cop. Uh, and then they gave like, almost like the more redeeming qualities to the criminal who was the dark-skinned man. So it's like, I like the casting choice as well for, cause it's, it's not as cut and dry as like, okay, dark-skinned bad, light-skinned good.

[00:27:39] You know, it's kind of like the, it's like it's happening, but you still could find the ways to root for, uh, Elon's character throughout. Um, some other, uh, names that we see in this, uh, Safina Brown Simmons is going to play Charlie. That is Ebony's half-sister and Coltrade's criminal connection. Now, this is what I was surprised to see. One of the first things about the show that surprised me was that, um, all these people are like one degree of separation from each other.

[00:28:05] Uh, he, you know, he's talking to Ms. Charlie and she's telling him, you know, the, she's giving him the rundown of the different heists that they're supposed to be doing. She's clearly above him in whatever ranking system this, uh, you know, this criminal, uh, little underground has going on. But at the same time, he's married to her sister. And so there's another added layer because now they are both invested in each other's lives in a way that they wouldn't be if they were just, you know, criminals that didn't know each other. Right.

[00:28:35] Because of the sister, because that's his wife, um, you know, she's going to be looking out for her and he's going to be looking out for his wife as well. And so you would think things were going okay, but wife wants out. Ebony is like, I don't want to do this anymore. I want to go, you know, I want to go clean. Uh, we don't, I don't want to put anybody else in danger and I don't want to put you in danger either because we found out that they recently had a miscarriage. Uh, and so, um, after that it kind of changed everything for her.

[00:29:05] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They, they lose their son. Uh, you know, we, we, it's, it's not implied, like we don't see the trauma. We just see the empty nursing room, um, and all of that. And then they reference the loss of Zaheer, uh, their, their son's name. Um, so she, she's going through it and we see Coltrane buying another strip mall.

[00:29:31] Apparently it's like his, he said like your, the, his real estate agent who was the guy from Royal pains. I was like, how are people like big name actors are doing cameos in this show? Um, he's like, Oh, this is like the 13th or the 30th. I don't know a strip mall that you bought. Should I put this in the same shell corporation? And he's like, no, this one is going into wild dirt holdings. This one will be legit.

[00:30:02] And he's like, I'm trying to get out. And it's that, that age old, the criminal who's retired, who's about to get out. It's, it's the, it's the same as the detective who's about to retire. Right. It's like that one more score that, um, so you're, you're rooting for him because you're like, Oh, he wants to get out. So you're just rooting that he gets the one good thing that happens and he can get out. But, um, and so he, and they juxtapose their, their lives here in that first episode because

[00:30:30] Coltrane and, um, Ebony. Yes. Right. Yeah. Ebony. Uh, even though they, they lost their, uh, son, they, their relationship themselves seems to be stronger, strong for it. Um, you know, especially when they're talking about the future and going clean and all of that, um, versus, uh, how Isaiah and his wife, Gabrielle, uh, Dennis's character, who's

[00:31:00] what was her name in the show? Her name, um, Candace in the show. Again, like we said, Candace is, Candace is fed up with him. He shows up late on their anniversary. She thinks he forgot their anniversary, finds out he didn't, but still we find out he's living outside and they're like pull out or something like, and that they're currently going through

[00:31:27] a separation after he leaves his son on the side of the road to go answer a call. They go to family counseling, counseling where look another, what Emmy award winner, I think is sitting here as their, um, as their, uh, their counselor. Yeah. Yeah. Her therapist, uh, the lady from the wire. Yes.

[00:31:53] Um, so many people, so many, um, don't let me lie to you. Uh, oh, um, yeah. Franklin's mom. Yeah. Mama barks. Oh yes. And Franklin's mom. Yes. Franklin's mom. Franklin's mom. Mama barks Dale in the wire. And then she's Franklin's mom in the, um, in, uh, snowfall, which does send you the, there was a, that's into the Tik TOK of, um, somebody was watching nemesis and they were

[00:32:21] recorded on their phone and they said, my sister hates this lady. So she was recorded on their phone. And when that late, when the lady from snowfall space came up, her sister started cussing her. Hey man. Um, look, Brianna barks Dale was wrong as hell. But Franklin's mom was not wrong. That lady did what needed to do. Michael.

[00:32:49] Sir, I could have sworn you didn't like her. Uh, The summer leaves in the air and the pool calls. But when the weather turns out, the pool water is quickly dry. Then the right care is the difference. With Byrol I set up on first-class health products and personal training for clear pool water the whole summer. Byrol, my expert for pool and wallpool care. The next day.

[00:33:21] Okay, wait. Run the tape back. Oh, so now I'm a contrarian because I, because I don't think that man, that man left and was ready to leave his mama for dead. And you think, I think that she should have gave him some money and let him go off, uh, scot free. Hell nah. Hell nah. He said, she said, she said, well, Franklin, what if it means that, that, that, that I, that I could die? And he was like, I don't care. It's worth it.

[00:33:51] And that was the moment, the moment I was like, well, Franklin, you gotta go. Um, but yes, but mama barks Dale. Wrong as hell. Wrong as hell. Okay. Um, love Michael Hyatt. Every time I see Michael Hyatt, it is in a drunk show. Yeah. It is every time. Love her. Yeah. When she popped up, I said, oh no, but you know, Mari, not to get too far away from the plot, but this LA ass show looked like an episode of Insecure.

[00:34:19] The, the scenes, I swear I saw the dunes. I saw like at different points. I was like, I've been in this neighborhood. I think we were in Franklin's neighborhood at one point. I know they're doing this on purpose. It's so LA. It's so LA. Um, and with the good and the bad, right? Like, I, I think the setting feels so authentic. Like you said, it really does. It has that, like you said, that LA ass filter over it to be quite honest.

[00:34:45] But then they were doing stuff where, um, one of the, one of, um, uh, Coltrane's, uh, was, uh, members of his, his, his robber gang, Dion, who is a focal point in these first two episodes. Dion, not only a problem, but like, though, like, yeah, I got 20 on the clip of cut. And I was just like, he's so creepy. Okay.

[00:35:16] But then, yes. I was like, okay, so he's the resident crib. Okay, cool. Sure. Fine. They wardrobe messed up and had him in a red shirt right after we confirmed that he's a crib. He's an undercover crib. Like literally. He's an undercover crib. He can't, he can't wear blue all the time. Then people gonna know as if they don't hear him saying cut and, and, and reporting that it was his C day, Mari. Sorry. C day. Where's thug Yoda? Right. Where's thug Yoda?

[00:35:45] We need to, we need to both of them. Yeah. Bick and back. Me and Moo. You know. Eat a bap the brunch. Yeah. Bring back thug Yoda. We need, you know, like I said, you have to have the yin and the yang. You have to vote. You can't just do one. Cause that was like, I was like, man, somebody, somebody failed the directive here because if he's supposed to be so down, they, they, they, they track down his set, all of this. And you have him talking crazy on here. It didn't even sound right. Coming out, out of his mouth. I'm sorry.

[00:36:15] It did not. Um, how are you going to have him in red? How are you going to have him in red? It's a creepy. Literally the next scene, Chappelle, right after the C day scene. He was in, he was in there talking with a red shirt on. I said, no, you, I know you. I don't know. Marcy said y'all are set tripping and we don't like it here on recap kickback. I don't. I don't. Yeah, it don't. It don't. We don't respect it. You know, um, I'm glad you brought him up.

[00:36:43] He is a focal point here because, uh, what, what we find out is that after the miscarriage, uh, seven, basically months go by. Seven months, I think go by between when, um, when, uh, Coltrane last big heist was until, so by the time the seven months is over, his crew is hungry. They got family to feed. They got, you know, they got baby mamas and all kinds of stuff to that. They got to support grandmas, all kinds of things.

[00:37:11] And so they're ready to make more money. And they're in Dre, this, uh, the super crypt, he is one of the, like one of the reasons why things are starting to fall apart. I'm sorry, Dion. Yeah. The, one of the reasons why things are falling apart because he is so broke. He's now got like a, kind of like a gambling problem. It seems he's, uh, stealing things that they are not supposed to be stealing. And this goes completely against everything Coltrane, uh, stands for because he's very by the book. Everything needs to be a certain way.

[00:37:39] We only steal the things that we have, that are approved. And for, for obvious reasons, right? Like you do these things so you don't get caught. But with, uh, Dion being so down bad for months, he's trying to make ends meet by stealing extra stuff, taking a watch here and there. Um, you know, um, gambling it all away at the same time because he's trying to get out of the hole that he's probably in from gambling as well.

[00:38:03] And so, um, he will be the big, the big source of conflict because, um, his crew is also very loyal to, uh, Dion. Dion, uh, Dion's nephew, I believe is also a part of the crew. And so, and I didn't know if he meant like nephew, like that's his, like, you know, his mom's child or nephew, like how Snoop Dogg be saying nephew, you know, cause we in LA. So, but I think I landed on, they actually blood maybe. They don't look alike. Yeah. They don't look alike.

[00:38:31] Uh, I think his nephew's name is Stroman. Right. And something like that. And Stroman and Coltrane are like, they're close and you can tell they're the brains of the operation. Um, and yeah, I definitely settle, settle on like, oh, that's definitely his nephew. It's the, we're all black. We know we all have, we all have the uncle that is younger than us.

[00:39:00] I definitely do. I definitely do. Uh, sure. And, and what about it? My uncle definitely two years younger than me, if I'm not mistaken. Exactly. So, um, I thought that was, I thought that was pretty funny, but yeah. So Dion, um, Dion has what he, I think, I think he said like four kids or something like that. Uh, some, some to that effect, four kids, uh, four baby mamas.

[00:39:27] I don't know, but he has, he has lots of kids and he has lots of gambling debt. And in the, the first, um, in the first heist that we see in the Halloween party, he takes that watch. And immediately on the police side, the police are like, this is a one of a kind watch. The moment that they fence it, we're going to be able to find it. It's like such a one of a kind watch.

[00:39:50] Meanwhile, what they actually took again, they're, they're, they're specializing in heists where they're taking money and they're taking, uh, diamonds that should not be where they're heisting it from. So when the police go there, it's like nothing stolen because they're stealing stuff that they kind of have the inside track on. But Dion is getting in the way of this, stealing the highly visible watch. And then onto the second, um, heist, we got to talk about this.

[00:40:17] This, this is the heist that happens while, um, Styles is with his son. And they are told by Ebony's sister that there are, there are unmarked diamonds in these three stores. They split up the diamonds. They are, they're holding them in these three stores. They're unmarked, unregistered. They're like perfect to sell diamonds. Woof, do you woof.

[00:40:41] So they go to, to steal these diamonds out of these three stores, which I need a sidebar for just two seconds. Chappelle, what sense did it make for the, they're like, there, there's these unmarked diamonds. They're really precious. We got to separate them into, for, into three separate stores. And then for the stores to all be right next to each other. Okay. I hear you. Comma, but it did take some crazy witchcraft for it to, for them to make this happen. Okay.

[00:41:07] So it was like, and yes, if you say it out loud, when you say it like that, it does sound absurd that they would put them all basically next door to each other. Next door. But the idea is you can't possibly rob all three stores at the same time, because if you go in the first one and rob it, the second and third store will now be alerted that you're doing that. Thus they will be, they will not be able to stop you. Uh, I mean, they will be able to stop you, right? The cops will come before you can get into the second and third store. So at best you can get one.

[00:41:36] Now, is it probably smarter to put them across town from each other? Maybe, um, you know, maybe, but I think at that point, um, we don't get this cool scene. So I'll take it. I legit, when they first said it, I was like, Oh, so they're across town. Like the, the shops are across town. And when I saw they were right next to each other, I was like, yeah. Yeah. So anyway, I was like, y'all have to be kidding.

[00:42:05] Just keep them all at one value at that point then. Um, but they do, they break into, um, three stores. Uh, the first store goes off without a hitch at the second store. Or, you know, the manager lady is kind of like, Oh my God. Uh, but Coltrane talks to her nicely and tells her to open the vault. For some reason he hit, he hits the alarm there. He not for some reason he hits the alarm there so that they, they all shut all the doors shut instantly, keeping the police out.

[00:42:34] And then they blow a hall, uh, a hole through the third wall. And this is where, again, we come back to Dion. This is where it, he gets dicey because he's sitting here. He's the, the explosion, the explosive expert. He blows the wall, but he's talking, Hey, cool. How much you want to bet on this wall? Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And he blows a hole into the third one. They go into the third store, which is an antique shop, which again, furthered. I was like, Oh, I thought it was all jewelry stores. Okay, fine. Whatever.

[00:43:02] Um, and because Dion is, has placed money on the Clippers to beat the warriors for some strange reason, not strange reason. I'm pretty sure it was long odds and he was hoping he would win. It's on in the antique store on the TV. He looks at it momentarily just to say, dang, the, the Clippers lost. And as he's doing that and undercover tries to pull a gun out.

[00:43:28] Um, they are alerted to the gun by Bianca, a girl named Bianca in the store who were like, Oh, look at that. And they end up having to shoot that undercover cop. And then the security guard also pulls a gun, I believe, or reaches for his weapon. So they have to shoot him too. So two people die because Dion wasn't paying attention. Again, he's messing up the score. And they do get in and get out in the, the, the time allotted.

[00:43:57] But now, um, Stroman, uh, Stroman and Coltrane have to, have to decide what they're going to do about Dion. And this is also where, uh, styles makes his impassioned plea to the news, which Chappelle, what was this? I wouldn't call it even a plea. He's like using the news to threaten these people. But again, it's this, uh, like kind of like hood dude mentality that he got, like instead

[00:44:26] of doing things, which is, I started to wonder why, how is he moving up the ranks so well at the cops at the LAPD anyway, if you're doing stuff like this, I'm like, sir, you're going to get demoted. Uh, because instead of being a detective and like, you know, like gathering information and stuff like that, he's now basically decided to wage war against these people, uh, because he has been tracking them. He was tracking them prior to them going quiet during the time, uh, when Coltrane had his, uh, they had to miscarriage him and Ebony.

[00:44:55] Um, they, they, at that point stopped doing heists and that's when the trail kind of ran, you know, ran cold. And so now they're back and the only person who was hell bent on catching them is Detective Styles. And he's taking it very personally. Everybody's saying like, this is some, it's literally somebody else's case. It's not even, it's not that the case is being ignored. Yeah. Like, he's like, I got us, it's like somebody has to be the police here. No, it's, this is somebody else's case. And I want it to be my case.

[00:45:23] And so I'm going to get that person kicked off the case so that I can be in control of the things that happened here. And he does make this big, like, just like impassioned moment. But again, something that you would not expect from a detective. Uh, and so now Coltrane's group knows that he's onto them. Um, and so, uh, but I guess a win in his column is that because they've made such a big scene killing these people, um, the pieces are starting to come together for him.

[00:45:51] He is starting to be able to say, okay, I think it's this crew. He's starting to pick apart different people that could be apart. He finds, uh, there's, there's a snitch, uh, named Ty Ty who he will go and link up with and kind of interrogate to get more information about Dion. And so he's slowly building, uh, like his, almost like his suspect list. The one person he can't really place a finger on is Coltrane because he's not like the rest of these criminals. We find out that a lot of them, they all spent time in jail together.

[00:46:21] Um, you know, at one time or another, and this is probably where this crew was formed. But while the rest of them have like longer rap sheets and even military backgrounds, he's more like the quieter, uh, of, of the bunch, uh, you know, probably a little bit more measured, but he doesn't have the same, um, like kind of like file that the rest of them have. Right. When they look through his file, they're looking at all these people of interest and, you know, it takes detective styles to be like, no, give me more information about him.

[00:46:49] And that's when Coltrane is finally on his radar. Cause for a long time he was not. Yeah. So we get, and that's the end of the second episode. So at the end of the two episodes, both of our main leads are basically aware of each other. Uh, Coltrane is aware of styles because that was a threat. So because he threatened him, Coltrane starts following styles, um, to get more info on him.

[00:47:13] And then now, uh, styles through the informant and through finding the, the loose thread that is Dion thinks that Coltrane might be the leader of this, uh, this crew. So, uh, this is where I think we get the titular nemesis from, you know, the, the, the two dudes are now, like you said, waging war on each other. That's what I expect to see in these, um, these next few episodes.

[00:47:41] I will say, uh, Ebony's sister is like, y'all made the block hot. Y'all dropped two bodies. Y'all made the block hot. I'm not about to fence these diamonds. You're going to have to go and meet up with the buyer. You and your whole crew got to go meet up with the buyer. And they're like, we don't normally do this. We normally get the stuff, give it to you, get our money. But she was like, nah, man, y'all got to go do it. And when she sends them there, we then get, see her on a phone call.

[00:48:07] And she's, she's talking to the buyer saying like, oh, I want you to take care of this one. And she sends a picture of Dion. So because she talks to, uh, because she, she talks to Coltrane about doing something about Dion and Coltrane was like, well, you know, he's fine. We'll handle it. And she's like, nah, he's a, he's a weak link. She calls her connect to, to kill him at the drop-off point. Unfortunately, what happens is when they get to the drop-off point to drop off the diamonds,

[00:48:36] when, when the, uh, buyer tries to kill Dion, uh, our boy Choi, who we really haven't talked about. He's, uh, the only Asian guy in the crew who is their sniper extraordinaire. He takes out the buyer. And so they all have to take out all of the people at the, you know, as, at the meetup. So, because they want no loose ends and Coltrane is so smart that he decides to dump the diamonds out, dump the velvet bags out. He makes it look like it was a deal gone wrong.

[00:49:07] The police have what they were looking for. It, they really, uh, serve those people up. They say it, they, they serve those people up like a bow for the LAPD. And you're like, yes, Coltrane, like they, they get, they get their money. They're short a mill, but they get their money. Those people are taken care of. There are no loose ends because again, Ebony's sister, what's her name? Ebony's sister? Charlie. Charlie. Yes.

[00:49:32] Cause Charlie goes to Bianca who we found out was a plant and she also gets rid of Bianca. So at this point, at the end of two episodes, there are no loose ends for that jewelry store robbery. And if styles would just stop being a road detective and accept the offerings that they gave him, then everybody should be good. But no, because when styles gets to that, uh, that meetup, he got to act like styles, right?

[00:50:01] He got, he got to act like styles. Uh, and that's what he does throughout, right? So whether it's hanging with the people, whether it's him, like with the cops coming after criminals or even amongst his own family, he's a little bit of a loose cannon. Uh, one of his biggest antagonists in this. Yeah. One of his biggest antagonists in this season is, uh, his, his very own dad, um, who it looks like he goes to visit just about once a month.

[00:50:25] Uh, his dad who formerly went by nightmare, uh, is, uh, uh, called Amos and, um, Amos has a criminal background. It seems like, um, for a while, um, maybe the two of them were able to cohabitate or at least, you know, like have a working relationship. But once his older brother, uh, once, uh, styles is older brother. Um, I think Josiah, um, is, uh, is, is killed.

[00:50:53] He will never forgive his dad for this. Also, his dad was also accused of maybe, uh, allowing, uh, styles is son to smoke weed. We will find out that that is not exactly what happened, but. For those reasons, uh, he does not look at his dad fondly and wants to keep, uh, quite the distance between the two of them. They will, uh, he will end up going to family therapy with his, uh, wife and child because he did leave his child on the side of the road to go fight crime. That's not great.

[00:51:22] Uh, and so he goes to family therapy and at family therapy, it is told that he needs to do something to kind of atone and to make things right with his family. So he agrees that he will be linking up, uh, with his father so that his son can go kick it with him. And he'll also be going to a charity, uh, event with, uh, his wife because that's what she wants him to do. He does not want to do either of these things. He wants to stay far away from his father.

[00:51:48] He does not care about this charity event, but I care a lot about the charity event, Mari, because the one connection that we haven't really talked about is that styles is wife. It is very familiar with, uh, with Ebony who is, um, yeah. Coltrane's wife. Ebony. Yeah. Yeah. Candace and Ebony are really good friends, uh, because of, uh, or at least they're becoming good friends because of this charity thing that they do together.

[00:52:16] So once again, these people are one degree of separation away from each other. And I'm just waiting on that collision course because you know, it's coming where they have to meet in public and can't get to each other, but they have to kind of like size each other up. I love that scene in any show that has ever been where the two people want to kill each other, but they can't cause they're in a room full of people. Yeah. Yeah. We are definitely headed towards that stare down moment. So again, really good setup.

[00:52:44] Um, uh, styles also brings in his police crew. He has the, the young, the young police officer, black police officer who looks up to him. We got the white guy from the wire, one of the police officers from the wire and then his, his partner, um, uh, Spanish lady. I don't have any of their names. That's why I'm just describing them. Oh, all three of them. Yvette Cruz is the detective, um, that works in homicide with him. Yes.

[00:53:14] So all three of them are looking at this scene that is left and they're like, let's wrap it up. It's good. We're done. And he's like, cause they're the task force. And he's like, no, that crew is still out there. So it looks like it's going to be crew versus crew. It's going to be them versus each other. And so I'm excited. Like I said, I will definitely continue watching. And, you know, um, to answer the question Chappelle for me, or like, I guess, uh, was it good though?

[00:53:43] Shout out to Jazz and Jason. Um, yeah. My opinion is, I mean, it's entertaining enough. I don't even like action style stuff, like action dramas, movies or anything like that. But I thought it was good enough for me to like, turn it on and watch. Um, my husband on the other hand, after when he, he thought it was a movie at first. And when the first episode went off, he's like, this is a show. I was like, yeah. He's like, nah, I can't do it. I can't do it.

[00:54:12] So I think it's just one of those things you have to watch it and figure out what your taste is. If you like it or not. How about you Chappelle? Yeah, I'm definitely going to check it out. You know, like it wasn't a hard watch at all. It's interesting. I want to know kind of where it's going, how it's going to end. I have my eyes kind of on death watch for a couple of people, like the new, the new young detective. He's dead. He's out of here. He's dead. Well, he's dead. Put a, put a fork in him. He's done.

[00:54:39] Uh, and so I want to see who will make it out of this alive, but also kind of want to see how this ends, you know, um, where it's going. And, uh, so I'm going to check it out. I definitely strongly recommend that everybody else check it out too. But Mari, my question for you is, are we going to come back and talk about how this all ends? I mean, we have so much going on in the next few weeks. We have a lot going on. Yeah. Are we going to have time to come back and like kind of wrap this thing up? TBD. TBD.
